  1. Yes, there is some evidence for using Metacam to slow the progression of some forms of OS. However, it really depends upon what medication your hound can tolerate. I don't believe that there's a definite way of knowing what form of OS is active in a living dog via x-ray data. One can tell by how rapidly the tumor grows. I've only dealt with the aggressive form.
  2. That's a shame. My vet charges $6 to write/fax a prescription for on-line meds, or even for meds that I can get through Costco. Expedites the process tremendously and saves bucks for other essentials. I've gotten a large bottle of 100 mg. Deramaxx for a very reasonable cost. Can you offer to pay a small fee to your vet for their time to fax?
  3. With my hounds that have had OS, I've used a combination of an NSAID (either Deramaxx, Metacam or Rimadyl) with Tramadol, depending upon what was tolerated best. Find out the upper limits of what you can give Butch, so he can stay as comfortable as possible. Sending prayers and light his way.
  4. My deepest condolences to you for your loss. Your sweet boy is in the best of company at the Bridge.

  7. I'm very sorry your sweet Butch may be dealing with the monster OS. Agree with the above suggestions to contact Dr. Couto and get his opinion on the x-rays, plus recommendations for treatment. If you decide to go with pain control, adequate medications that do the job are critical. You know your hound the best, and will make the best decisions possible for him. Don't second guess yourself. I found the Circle of Grey to be a tremendous source of support and information. Sending prayers and light to you both.
