  1. You can order the same active ingredient as Drontal very inexpensively from AU and it will arrive within week. I swear by Adams products as far as flea and tick. The spray works great on furniture, etc. If you just have fleas you could ask the vet about Advantage. If you have fleas and ticks both then ask about Frontline.
  2. I asked that question of the state zoonois board when Texas changed over a few years ago. They said there are two types and you can tell by the name, but most vets use the three year even if the state requires yearly vaccinations.
  3. I've taken out a lot of stitchs with the litttle fingrnail clippers that aree for your pocket -- easy to slip corner under. Your vet may or may not charge you to do it. My first grey cme freshly spayed from Kansas and I had my vet tke them out. He said "no charge, if she'd bit me then I'd have charged you". BTW, I have had a few cases of dissolvables that didn't dissolve....
  4. Don't know what you are looking for but heartworm meds don't require a script in AU.
  5. It will do him no harm to give another the next day, even if he didn't puke up the first one. The dose of Ivermectin for heartworm in Heartgard is so tiny a greyhound could eat the whole box at once and be just fine.
  6. ...and you might get a nice shiny coat out of the deal
  7. Maybe get ready for a few runny poops, but it shouldn't be a problem at all.
  8. Have a blood panel done, but other than that I wouldn't worry. When I first started working with adoption I was careful to ask/ make sure the vets were aware of greyhounds and anesthesia. They all silently nodded until one said "M'am, with all due respect any vet that doesn't know about greyhounds and anesthesia has been under a rock for 15 years". My vet was not greysavvy when I started going to him but he was referred as an excellent vet by GALTS main vet -- and he has been that. Between my dogs and GALTS he's pretty greysavvy now and he hasn't lost one. A lot of vets run dental specials in Feburary. That is right around the corner so ask.
  9. A lot of vets run specials on dentals in February...you might check. It varies widely according to region. East and West coast dentals in biig cities will be a lot more than $120 and $10 a tooth on the plains.
  10. I found this on a vet site..sounds like wht your vet may be thinking. I have examined a great many puppies and kittens. I have never seen an instance where I felt that a puppy or kitten needed to be neutered before sexual maturity was imminent. I developed a way to decide the best time to neuter pets - I am sure many veterinarians made the same observations. Just before a pet reaches sexual maturity, permanent, upper canine teeth (fangs) replaced the ones they had as puppies or kittens. When these permanent teeth first erupt, every pet I have ever examined was still immature and showed no sexual traits. But very soon after these new teeth reached their final length, sex hormones begin to rise. That is when I set an upcoming appointment to spay the pet within 14 days.
  11. Ideally it should be 6 months, but I don't think that a month would be that much difference. Breeder friends that I trust implicity say one should wait until 6 months if at all possible as the hormones affect growth plates and other factors.
  12. Just use baby oil or oilve oil on the pain patch. put it around the edges and just gently gradually work it under the edges a wee bit at a time with your fingernail. The key is not to hurry it. work it under a tiny edge then squeeze a lttle more under your foothold, then go do something else for a while while it works. Repeat as needed. Take all afternoon if need be.
  13. Go see Dr. Jeff Ellis at VCA Preston Park. I guarantee you that he has seen more greyhounds than any other vet in Dallas. People comment every day on Buck's huge thigh muscles and he's been retired 3.5 years.
  14. I've had a couple of fosters with SM and Revolution worked extremely well.
  15. If you can find anyone to go to Mexico for you the human version is about .07 a pill. My vet and a vet friend helped me compute the canine dosage and we may have covered it in another GT thread. If you can get your vet to write you a script the human version (Meloxicam) is also a $4 drug at Wal Mart.
  16. I think in 2.5 years Buck has picked up a stuffie maybe twice, tossed it in the air once and then walked off. His ears will perk up when someone else squeaks a stuffie, but he makes no move to get it. I had one of those goodie balls and none of my guys or numerous fosters ever played with it. A couple would bat it with a paw then walk away as soon as a roll didn't yield a treat. However, they'd all happily follow Poodle around while he rolled and rolled it -- sharing in his spoils. No fools those greyhounds.
  17. Everyone knows what I am going to say. In regard to vet care for my dogs my biggest regret is/was putting Rex through the pain his AVCA vet inflicted on him in the name of adjustments. We quit gong after 4 visits because I could not stand mellow mellow Rex having to be muzzled and screaming and lashing out while the vet told me everything was fine. Maybe Rex could have taken more but I couldn't take watching his fear and pain.
  18. Do accupuncture. I went against my vets recommendation to try accupuncture (he said it had a proven clinical track record that chiro does not) and tried chiro instead. It was something I will never ever ever do again. The chiro that hurt Rex was not only a DVM but is an instructor at the chiro college here. You'd think one couldn't get any more qualified....
  19. I appreciate the fact everyone can participate -- especially you! (as I nosh on the last of the awesome Lake Champlain chocolates) Do I need to "fridgerate" the syrup once it is opened? It was quite the challenge to get the wax open but man was it good. Thanks again
  20. Buck has needed his anals done once. My vet charged $28. Imagine my surprise when I asked the groomer the next time I took Poodle in. The groomers cost was $25 plus tax, however that was the cost for a bath and Anal glands and toe nail trim included. For what I paid the vet I could have had a bath and toenail trim tossed in free. Groomers are usually very good at it as they do it so much on the littler dogs.
  21. I'm in the boat with you. Mine receieved her present, thanked her other SS then hasn't been on GT since. Maybe my present was so crummy she gave up on GT? Every SS I've had has gone WAYYYY beyond the call of duty and it has been wonderful and I am most certainly grateful. I do wonder sometimes if people get wonderful gifts from SS like mine that have the means, then get peeved at those of us that want to participate but can only spend the $20 -$25. I know that my present would look pretty measley compared to what I received, especially if they arrived at the same time.
  22. deadfleaz or petsmegastore -- both Aussie.
  23. Buck walks in, immediately poops then goes from human to human walking under their hands for pets and leaning on them. Once in a great while he will chase a border collie or other dog that is chasing a ball a few times, but that's it. My Rex used to just stand at the gate and hope someone would let him out so he could go to the car. Neither one have liked it so we don't go but once in a blue moon (mostly for the ride) and they are ready top leave after 15 minutes.
