  1. I've only had one amputation done and that was in Lubbock, but that was due to HBC when she got out of a foster home in a storm (front door blew open). The vets all suggested a doc that did a lot of orthopedic surgeries and he did an excellent job. Cost was $400. Ashley was a younger girl but she honestly never missed a beat after losing a front. By the time her pain patch came off she was hopping through the dog door. We have a GSD client at work missing a front and he gets in his owners SUV fine, but Gus is about 6. Thoughts and prayers for you and Dempsey. Best of luck.
  2. Dawn dish soap lathered up and left on for 5 minutes will kill fleas. Capstar is a lot easier tho.
  3. Rimadyl never really has done much for us. Deramaxx worked on my boy with an iffy tummy but was a hit in the pocketbook. If you know someone that can go to Mexico the human version of Metacam is .05 a pill and your vet can help you figure dosing. Just a side note. My sister has Hep C and is on the tranplant list at Baylor. The ONLY pain pill she is allowed to have is tramadol. At least in humans it is much gentler on the liver and kidneys.
  4. With my foster last week I used BatMoms redneck duct tape muzzle guard and it worked like a charm. :)She shows pics in w\one thread.
  5. Two fosters left tonight so we are down to a managable two and they did all share some of the bulk treats. I cannot WAIT to make pancakes but that will have to wait til Jan. 2, my next day off. I am sure the boys won't turn up thir noses at a pancake or two. Thank you again so much for everything...the ice tray, the book. We are going to start putting one of those quotes on a board at work every day.
  6. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! That was awesome. The boys graciously shared a few treats with the foster dogs and I am actually having chocolates for breakfast -- they are wonderful! Your kindness is much appreciated. Pam, Buck, Poodle and Kenny
  7. My first grey died of IMHA a few days after her annuals and I did quite a bit of research but that was years ago. There is a vet on another grey forum who firmly believes over-vaccination is linked -- and so do I. The good news is that your friends dog is male. A male dog that I adopted out lived a fairly good life for several years after he was diagnosed. My research found that poodles and cockers are very prone to the disease and middle aged bitches are most likely to die from it. My niece who is an RN says something similar happens in people with Lupus --another autoimmune disease. They rarely have a male patient with Lupus die but if a young Hispanic woman is admitted they very very seldom live. My girl (who was 4) went from fine to dead in 48 horrible hours and it was a terrible death I wouldn't wish on anyone. She went so fast the Coombs test came back right after she died.
  8. Yep the foil makes poop pick up interesting but a few kisses won't cause any harm.
  9. I would never put a dog through corn surgery again. The ones of Rex's that came back I got with duct tape.
  10. Roy is doing fine. My vet resutured hin and he had a little bit of seepage for a day or two, but that has stopped. The first two times it was quite a bit of blood -- at the vet that didn't want to treat him's office the first night they had to get a mop to clean it up. Anyway, he is healing great and I'm stopping the Metacam after today. He went to work with me yesterday and was a PERFECT angel but no one wanted to adopt him. I really hope we get a taker before Thursday when he can't go anymore -- and I'll have to bring home Baxter who is living at work if he's not adopted by then. Poodle will kill me in my sleep if we have 3 fosters. He lets me know when he's had enough and he has. We'll have to take a break after these guys.
  11. I have taken in quite a few fosters and not one has had any reaction.
  12. I'd do accupuncture. My vet says that it has a far better proven clinical track record.
  13. Thanks Lynn. I have the 7.5s. We spent a long time on the couch last night with a bag of frozen stir fry veggies wrapped in a towel...no peas
  14. I've always used it once a day, was just wondering. I have the human pill version and my vet did the conversion for me when Rex was using it so I think 1/2 pill is right for a 45# dog. Rex was 90# and took a whole one.
  15. Roy (of the drive thru neuter) is bleeding again. I don't know what to do and hate to be a drama queen. My vet doesn't open for 45 minutes. I guess I just feel so bad for him. Ideas for what to do until vet opens? I guess I'm flipped out because I had a dream he died during hs neuter.
  16. A few weeks ago there was a Spaniel X that kept stirring up all the dogs in the neighborhood as he romanced a girl in heat two doors down. I thought he was some fence jumping outside dog until I noticed he was dragging a pretty expensive leash. He has been here since and is a wonderful dog, obedience trained and very calm. He will make someone a great dog. The all breed I work with agreed to take him and told me to take him to Plano yesterday and wait while he was neutered. Visions of making calf fries danced in my head. Sure enough an hour and a half later we were on our way home. When we got out of the car I noticed the blood on his white legs and thought it was just a little seepage...until I noticed the puddle of blood in my floor where he was laying. Rescue told me to take him to vet on the corner whom I HATE with a passion. He looked at him and the larger puddle of blood on his floor and said it appeared to be arterial bleeding and he really didn't want to charge an arm and a leg to work on him after hours as he was about to close. He told me to take him back to Plano as his gums still looked good so he wasn't in immediate danger. Big problem is it is now rush hour and raining so getting back there would be a solid hour at best. I finally called my vet and drove him there. Dr. Manny said that the problem was that he was one of those few dogs that swell tremendously and he was bleeding out of his stitches. He put in 3 staples and said to watch him and call today with an update. No charge. He seems to have stopped bleeding. I gave him some Metacam last night. When can I redose? I am totally sure he is really hurting and I have only used it on long term pain management. Bless his stray dog heart. I guess I am a little peeved as if the vet had held on to him overnight they could have spotted and dealt with this. As a West Texas girl I'm not a big coddling weenie and know snips USUALLY aren't a big deal but last night was no fun at all.
  17. Never heard of rubbing it on the ears. IMHO drop measuring is worthless and most people that have little or no results try putting it in water or counting drops and give far too little. That funky dropper only fills about halfway and I start with two or three droppers (or half droppers such as they are) right on their tongue (usually followed or preceded by a couple on mine...). Do not spare it. It does work on some and not others but I think a lot of people underdose.
  18. Oh Pat -- I don't know what to say or exactly how to say it....
  19. We have been remiss in thanking you! Mom said that Trudys chocolate is very good and we have almost finished the totally yummy treats -- even though we had to share with the foster and the stray dog. She even gave us each a little piece of the white chocolate and we have to agree with her. Thanks again SS
  20. My best guess is that Kenny is a grey/shepherd mix. About a year and a half ago a woman pulled him out of a gas kill shelter on his last day. None of the grey rescues would take him because he is...just not grey enough and I understand that. The owner that put him in the pound was an ex-roommate of her boyfriend. She said Kenny had not deserved the terrible life he had been forced to live and asked me to watch him until she couild find a home for him...and he's still here. He is 10+ and has a chronically dislocated hip though my vets keep telling me his quality of life is good. A vet friend of mine in AZ goes to Mexico and gets him Metacam really cheap. He was on an all breed rescue groups website for a year and I took him to M&Gs but no one seems to be in the market for a crippled old black dog. He's had some hard knocks (especially the one that crippled him -- probably HBC and never treated) but he just keep on keeping on.
  21. P.S. None of the boys are really into toys.
  22. OMG!!! that was TOO Cute! :) Thank you so much Buck, Poodle and Kenny are three slightly cranky old men (7,8 and 10) Being in Dallas we really don't need any clothes to put them in. At 85# Buck could pull Santas sleigh, but Kenny at 60# and Poodle at 27# might just be in the way. I don't do coffee and seldom do tea. They are not really for me. I do have a sweet tooth for any such treat. Hard to find a sweet that I won't eat. The boys are easy as can be -- they will eat any treat that they happen to see. Anything from our SS will make us happy. Kenny Bucky Poodle
