  1. My Oliver (13) had one episode of vestibular disorder with the rapid eye movement that we know of. I rushed him to the vet. I would say the episode was over within 20 minutes. My vet said that we would see the episodes re-occur and gradually last longer in duration. Oliver died of a stroke 3 months later without another vestibular episode. Had another episode occurred our vet said we did not need to bring him in but to : watch him - perhaps keep him separate from the other dogs while we were gone - limit his space (as in not roaming the whole backyard or whole house unattended) check his temperature - the stress of the episode had Oliver panting. He was very warm to the touch. When I checked his temp I think it was 102. Vet said to keep him cool with wet cloths. These episodes are so heartbreaking.
  2. For that kind of money they better give you a copy of the actual lab results. If you post them here many can respond who know how to interpret the values.
  3. A friend's older Sharpei mix has been diagnosed with a malignant oral melanoma. Her prognosis isher prognosis is guarded to poor." Her vet has suggested a vaccine. I am not sure exactly which one but possibly this one. vaccine Anyone have experience with this?
  4. Can anyone recommend a good book or video on how to massage your dog other than the TTouch ? When I checked on Amazon there were a lot of listings. How to make a choice? Is there a good way or bad way to massage?

    Caesar

Caesar sounds like he was quite a character. Farewell grumpy, growly, snappy old fart.
  6. The corn-in corn-out observance shows our dogs move it through in about 7 hours time. Hope your Tania is OK.
  7. Gracie will see the vet this week for her yearly checkup. She is in good health except for weight gain. I think I noticed about 2 months ago that she was getting pudgy. My DH is the worst about giving little bits of table food and too many cookies and too many Pupperoni sticks. After this weekend's M&G I told him some of our group members had commented on her weight - not in a rude way - so it wasn't just me. DH has agreed to no longer purchase Pupperonis or Beggin Strips. He has agreed to cookie rationing. For the past 6 months Gracie has been getting 1 1/4 cups of Iams Senior Weight management per meal with one teapsoon of Beneful wet dogfood stirred in. Our main kennel steered us to that particular Iams. We fed it to all the dogs and all have good firm poop. I would prefer not to change brands. She has not been begging for extra (junk) food - DH just was giving it out. I have not posted this in the Food forum because I'd like to know if there are any extra blood tests I should ask for. All she's scheduled to get is a heartworm test along with her vaccinations. I guess a thyroid test could be done but other than the weight gain she shows no odd symptoms. I could attribute it to the hot summer but we've had hot summers in previous years and she didn't gain weight. I'd say her activity and exercise amounts are the same as previous summers. The other dogs have not gained weight like Gracie has. Today was Day 1 of treat rationing and she doesn't seem bothered by it in the least. If Gracie gains more weight I'll be able to claim that she's a yellow lab. I know the negatives of too much weight being a detriment to her health as she ages. Unless this is truly a too-many-cookies situation, could anything medical be going wrong here?
  8. I've been thinking about your Scooter all weekend. The Macoduck bunch has all paws crossed for you guys.
  9. Those symptoms sound like Oliver's first episode of Vestibular Disorder and Nystagmus (eyes twitching left/right). He too looked very off balance. We rushed him to the vet and the symptoms disappeared soon after. Vet said however that they would reoccur and with greater frenquency. Oliver was 13. While he didn't have another episode of the VD&N, he did die of a stroke within a month. None of that is very encouraging. But if your dog had VD&N, my vet had said it otherwise woudn't hurt Oliver. We were to keep him calm during any future episodes and make sure his temperature did not get too high.
  10. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Scooter you will be absolutely irresistable in a POTC pirate eye patch.
  11. A friend's greyhound had her dental recently. She was woozy upon pickup but fine the next day. The vet has greyhound experience and pre-surgical blood chemistries were done.. These are the meds used: gas anesthesia ketamine diazapam atrophine torbugesic Is this protocol OK?
  12. Poor Huey. Payback is heck for slaying all those stuffies. Don't let any of those pesky tall kids pick on you when you're not feeling your best.

    Oscar

Dear Diary, Oscar left us today. His musings will be missed by so many. Signed, Fan of Oscar
  14. I'm always wondering, "when was the last time I clipped nails?" or "oops, did I brush their teeth yesterday?" I'd like to develop a chart to post on the refrigerator. Sure, I could write it out by hand but I'd like a chart or graph design. Does anyone keep a chart or do you remember everything in your head? If anyone cares to come up with something I'd like to include: Dog names: GRACIE WALLY PUDGE Actions: TEETH EARS BRUSHING(hair) BODY CHECK (for lumps) WALKS with space for other actions to be added And I'd like to be able to write in the dates rather than just make a check mark. Can you think of anything else? I'm a list kind of gal. Keeps me organized. But spreadsheets kick my a$$. OK, ya'll can stop laughing at me now.
  15. That was a lovely tribute for Sonny. I've added his name on the list of greys that left us in July. He is certainly in very good company acorss the bridge.
  16. Goodbye Jackie, you were such a sweet girl.
  17. Oliver had a seroma on the low point on his chest after a trauma (Gracie body-slammed him). It didn't totally re-absorbed but was never a problem.
  18. I'll be thinking of you and Buzz this evening.
