  1. I am so sorry for your loss. You made the right decision for your Fenway.
  2. Thanks! Yes, the Olewo carrots are great. I always have them on hand in case of tummy upset.
  3. Thank you all for your responses! You've all given me a lot of food for thought, and I have some research to do. I was looking at this product, Grizzly Joint Aid, as it combines both omega 3s and joint supplements. Link: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=33836 Has anyone tried this specific product? With the Springtime products, have any of your hounds had any gastro issues after use? I have one hound with a very touchy system, and I'm constantly working to not set it off. Thanks again!
  4. I am interested to hear about what supplements you all buy to aid your hounds' mobility. What do you use and what do you recommend? There are a lot of different products out there with varying reviews, so I would like to know what has worked well for your greyhounds. Back in the day, my family had our senior greyhound on straight glucosamine/chondroitin supplements that we bought at Sam's Club. It worked pretty well for our old guy, and he still got around pretty well until about 13 1/2. My Luna will be 10 in May, but she is still galloping around like she did at 3. I'd like to start her on something as a prophylactic. Nova will be 8 in April, but I might as well start with her as well. Thanks in advance!
  5. Thank you all for your responses! I live in a townhouse, and don't have much of a yard to speak of. My dogs get leash walked at least four times each day. I have treated my own yard, but when you live in close quarters, I've discovered that a person's pest control is only as good as their neighbor's. That said, I will stay persistent with the vacuuming, cleaning of bedding, etc. The fact that it is still in the 90s and humid outside is also not working in my favor. I gave them Capstar when I very first noticed fleas hopping around outside and onto Nova. Since I was going to scour my entire house, I figured I'd start with the hounds. Amazingly enough, Luna has stayed out of this completely. Poor Nova is always the one that picks up critters. I feel pretty good about my house, as fleas tend to love me, and I will be covered in bites when they are present. Long story short, I bought a four pack of Advantage II to give them a whirl. I may look into pills/chewables in the future. Their last dose of Frontline was about 9 days ago, and I do not want to overdose them. I realize that the spot-ons will not repel fleas, but I want to keep anything that does land on them from becoming a big issue. Does anyone know if I can administer the Advantage II before 30 days, or do I really need to wait a full month?
  6. The extra hot and sticky summer has led to allout flea heaven in my city. While I know I'm not dealing with an infestation in my home (yet), I have found six fleas on poor Nova over the past couple of weeks. She's gotten some baths and I comb her over with a flea comb, but don't come up with much most of the time. I have also treated my home with DE, Adams spray, and am regularly vacuuming and washing the dog bedding. Long story short, I don't think Frontline has been doing the trick around here. I would like to try Advantage II to see if it does a better job on the hounds. How long do I need to wait in between treatments? Does it need to be the entire 30 days? Also, can I use Advantage II and administer another Capstar tablet in the same day? I feel like every time we go outside, Nova picks up a flea or two. It's just that time of year around here, and I don't want to just quit walking the dogs to avoid them. Luna has somehow avoided this whole situation. Poor Nova has always attracted more bugs, and of course, the little hound does not react well to flea bites and welts up terribly. Half the time, I think they hop on her while we're out, have their meal, then hop off again before we get anywhere. I hate fleas, but know that, with regular upkeep, this too shall pass. Thanks in advance!
  7. Sometimes I feel like our hounds just need a little reset. I think I'd try going with yummy treats and lots of positive talk and reinforcement when she successfully uses the stairs to see if it does the trick. (I can just picture Sweep giving you that look like, "Really mom? All I did was walk down the stairs." haha)
  8. I am very sorry for the loss of your Luke.
  9. Oh no, Alicia, please send my sympathies to Rachel and Matt. When you posted the rads the other day, I was so hoping they didn't belong to James Bond, as I remembered that you all were from the same area. Though his parents haven't been on here in quite some time, I always had a hound-crush on James. Run free, sweet boy.
  10. Sending hugs as your remember your special boys.
  11. What a pretty girl- I love her polka-dots! Congratulations!
  12. Just wanted to pop in to say that your hats are adorable and that Daisy does a great job modeling them!
  13. I adopted a spooky hound about 5.5 years ago. While she warmed up to me (but only me) fairly quickly at home, she was also very fearful when we'd venture out of the house. Like your pup, she'd try to bolt or do a bucking bronco/crocodile death roll move to try to slip her collar and get away from whatever was scaring her. Like your girl, she is not terribly motivated by food. Before trying calming treats or medication, I decided to go with a harness, and purchased the 2 Hounds Freedom harness that ramonaghan linked above. Honestly, the harness was a game changer for us. The fact that I was no longer paranoid about her bolting or slipping from her collar (the harness provides gentle security) made me much more confident with the leash. Luna could tell the difference in the way I was reacting to her stimuli, and began to follow suit. Fast forward to the present, and she is awesome on walks. Noises and contact no longer bother her. For example, if I accidently stepped on a stick in the past, she would have bolted, but now she can walk right next to noisy garbage trucks or construction equipment without an issue. She still won't let random people pet her, but that's a whole different issue. I wish you the best with your girl! Time and patience are definitely the key with the timid hounds.
