  1. She has been on it for 3 days so far. I didn't realize it was part of the recall too. I am starting to feel like nothing is safe ! I fed her a chicken breast for breakfast this morning because we are having company tonight and it is not warm enough here to open the windows. This is frustrating !
  2. Been trying to find a food that Ruby will eat since her last food was recalled and I decided not to continue with the same one. I home cooked her meals for a couple weeks and then decided to put her on the Costco chicken and rice food, which she loves. The problem is she is burning my eyes with her obnoxious toots ! Does this normally go away with time or should I keep looking for another food ? Poops look normal and firm and I know she doesn't have worms. She didn't have this problem on her last food but didn't eat it very well. No toots on the home cooked version either but I am just too lazy to conitnue with that process.
  3. Praying that he is is over this one quick !
  4. Thank you for all the great replies. I have written down the add ins and the recipes and will try to keep my girl happy. Really appreciate your help !
  5. Yesterday after searching 2 stores, I decided to go to the mexican meat market and make some food for Ruby. I put a couple of chicken breasts and some chicken legs in a large pot, some carrots & peas and a small amount of chicken broth along with some rice and boiled it for a few hours. Then I pulled out all the bones and made several meals to put in the freezer. I also filled the crock pot with the same ingredients and let it cook about 28 hours and am getting ready to portion it out and freeze. My question is, is there other ingredients that I should be adding ? Ruby has a sensitive tummy so need to stick with chicken. The crock pot bones softened up nicely so will let her have those bones. Can you share your recipes with me please ? I do not want to go back to feeding raw and will probably go back to kibble when I find a good one again. For now I will keep cooking. Thanks !
  6. Thanks everyone for the responses. I went to a kennel and feed store today and decided that for now, I will make her food until I can find one that looks good. Tonight she got raw skinless chicken thighs and I am making a crockpot batch of chicken with rice, a few peas and carrots (I know they don't need this but I feel better) and very little water. I am hoping the bones will soften by tomorrow and if not I will fish them out. I don't know what else to do at this point. It is scary out there and the only one I found was by EVO and it was $72 a bag !!! I will make her food for that price. At least I know what is in it. She loves the raw feeding but I am just not comfortable with it. I tried it for 2 weeks a few months back. I just hope I can get her eating her meals again. I wonder if her pickiness is due to the food being bad ?
  7. After researching the internet I found a food called Proplan Selects and it looks pretty decent. Does anyone use this one ?
  8. I have read most of the threads about the recalls and haven't seen a "safe" chicken food that I can go look for. Ruby has not been eating the food very well but shows no signs of being sick. I just thought her appetite was less in the warmer weather, but now worried it has something to do with the food itself. I switched her to this food from the Costco salmon variety because she stopped eating it. So.............no more Diamond products but I need a few choices to look for when I shop tomorrow. I do want to stay with chicken and would prefer a quality food with no sweet potatoes added. Appreciate your help !
  9. Can all of you who feed other brands give us some ideas ? I had just switched to Diamond chicken and Ruby is doing well, but it obvioulsy looks like we need to change and soon.
  10. Sent you a message here too. Hope you got it ?

  11. I was able to get it but can't get it to pull up here. Would you like to chat by email ? Would be easier than going through this site. Sounds like you and I have a lot in common. It would be fun to get together tomorrow and celebrate being moms. My email is skykaren1219@yahoo.com

Happy Mothers Day to you !

I hope you have a wonderful day doing something you love. If you would ...

  12. Ruby LOVES these !!!! Pretty cute packaging I thought too.
  13. The human jerky (chicken) turned out really good and I am now going to hide some of it in the back of the freezer from my husband. He has eaten half of it already I think. Ruby has only had one piece of hers but she wolfed it right down. Hers was just plain but I did dry them together in the dehydrator. Think it's a hit all the way around and I am so excited to not have to be worried about treats from China any longer. YAY !!!
  14. I have been thinking about adding an oil to Ruby's diet but I was wondering if it affects the poops at all ?
  15. This may sounds really silly but I was just wondering if it would make the dog food safe if you put it in the oven for 30 minutes or so ? I know the problem with raw chicken is salmonella but it is not a problem if you cook it. That is why you have to be so careful when fixing a meal with it and not contaminating your sink, counters, etc. I have been feeding the Diamond brand but the numbers are not the ones being recalled but I am still nervous. When I was reading about the recall it said there has been 14 cases of people getting sick from handling the food. I also know that when I was reading the recipe book that came with my dehydrator it said if you make chicken jerky to put it in an oven at 160 degrees for 1/2 hour before bagging it to eliminate the possibility of salmonella poisoning. Why wouldn't this work with dog food ? Does this make any sense ?
  16. I just pulled the strawberries off and am cleaning the trays and next goes the jerky for us and for Ruby. Excited to try it. I was wondering about drying liver ? Has anyone tried that for their hounds ? Any other meat products they might like that would work ?
  17. Someone told me they parboil their yams to get them semi-soft first and then dry them. Not sure what difference it would make but might make them chewier. Ruby doesn't like the dried yams so I don't think I will be giving them a try with my new dehydrator. I was wondering what else I could dry for treats for her other than meat ? Getting ready to dry some plain chicken breast for her.
  18. I have chicken breast marinating in the recipe given by Jimbuck so will let that stew until Saturday morning. Left a few slices plain for Ruby. Dehydrating strawberries right now and the house smells delicious !
  19. I think I am going to try to make some chicken breast jerky for humans too with the above recipe from Jimbuck. I have Thursday off so am going to get the ingredients from the store and get busy. I bought the NESCO dehydrator and also bought the extra trays and some things to use to make fruit leather. Excited to try it. I also plan on making some dehydrated strawberries. I have heard they are delicious as healthy snacks.
  20. I just started feeding the chicken and rice version too. Does anyone know if this has been an ongoing problem with Diamond ?
  21. You are right....Ruby is a hound and I originally asked about treats for her and then added another post that I would like a recipe for human jerky. I got the dehydrator in the mail today so will start a batch on my next day off. Can't wait to try it for both Ruby and I.
  22. FiveRoooooers............I did see that link and made sure that was not the kind we had but I appreciate you pointing that out. So scary all the food recalls ! Thanks.
  23. I didn't think you needed to do much for the dog variety but wondered if it needed anything. I will definitely try that recipe Jimbuck, it sounds delicious. I have a bunch of ground turkey in the freezer so will try the patties for Ruby tbhounds. She doesn't like anything with sweet potatoes though so will have to make some adjustments. GreyAcresMom...........you must save a ton of money since you don't have to buy dog food. Dirt is much cheaper and easier to find. Wish Ruby wasn't so picky. lol. Do you store the strips in the fridge after you dehydrate them ? I have bought jerky that had to be kept in the fridge and some that was a drier texture so you didn't have to.
  24. Any amazing people jerky recipes out there also ??? I would love to make some for Christmas gifts this year.
  25. It has been about a week now on the new Diamond Naturals Chicken food and she is back to not eating as much as I think she should. The bag says to feed her anywhere from 3-4 cups a day and I would say she is now getting about 2 cups per day. She gobbled it up the first 4 days but now has gone back to just eating a few handfuls at both meals. I have decided to wait it out but I did call the vet to discuss it with him on Friday. He said not to worry, she may just be adjusting to the warmer weather and that when he saw her this last time, all her lab work looked great. He did say if I thought she was starting to lose weight to bring her in but I don't think she has. Her poops are much firmer than they were on the salmon food, even though those were solid too. They seem much drier. Will just watch and see what happens in the next week or so and keep a close eye on her weight.
