  1. You can buy extra wide baby gates....they're mesh-filled and can be adjusted up to about 6' wide. Ask me how I know this fact.....
  2. I still would consider that he might be cold. Put some jammies on him for a few nights. Covering him with a blanket will not keep him warm if he moves around ... the blanket will just fall off. Does he actually have to 'go' when you put him out at 2am? Giving in to his crying in the middle of the night will only confirm to him that this behaviour is acceptable. Be very firm and insist he go lay back down. No need to get out of your bed...just tell him to go lay down and do not give in. I know...easier said than done...but your persistence will pay off! This will take a few nights, as he is now in the habit of waking up in the middle of the night. If you are still conviced that he is hungry at 2am, give him a peanut butter sandwich whenever he goes out for his pre-bedtime pee. edited to say... Sorry if I sound mean!
  3. Sending hugs from Ontario. Remember.... you did what was best for Larry.
  4. I have had good luck using it topically on my horses and I have used it a bit on the dogs. I certainly would not ingest it, although some people do. I also have a CS/Aloe vera gel and it is wonderful. I'm in Ontario and get it from http://www.happyhoundzhome.com/index.html
  5. Thinking good thoughts for King. Our last Dobergirl was badly affected by von Willebrands disease. She needed infusions of Cryoprecipitate before, during and after her spay.

I am so very, very sorry.....Harley fought a good fight. You did all you could. More than most people would have done. Just remember that he loved you.... Nancy, Nixon and his sisters in Ontario
  7. Sending more healing thoughts and some plain old fashioned good luck.
  8. How long have you had Chevy? We've had multiple dogs for a number of years and it always takes a few months for the 'new pack' to get settled into the new positions. Ollie is probably confused - of course - and trying to figure out if she is still in charge. Which she probably will be. And if she's not in charge, then she needs to see just how far can she go. Chevey is also trying to figure out his place. Sounds like he doesn't really want to be top dog...if he wanted that posiiton, he would really let Ollie know. In my experience, the female who has been in charge will keep that position, but it is not not always obvious right away. Does your son's dog live in the same house? How do he & Chevy get along? I would stop any outright agression, but otherwise leave it up to them to sort it all out.
  9. This. No way would I ever let any dog lay on the floor beside a baby. Never. I don't even leave our two dog-savvy grandkids (4 & 2) alone in the same room as any of my dogs. And my 3 dogs are the most calm, laid-back bunch you'll find anywhere. The GSD and Hound are both certified Therapy Dogs and I still would not leave the kids alone with them. It is just not worth the risk....even as miniscule as it it with my three...we would never forgive ourselves if 'something' happened.
  10. I too, have been there too many times, with my dogs, as well as my beloved equines. My motto has always been "Better a day too soon, than a moment too late". You WILL know when the time is right. Our Billie is over 14 now, and as each week goes by, the getting up and down is harder and harder for her. But her tail wags, she loves her food and still can climb onto the low futon. I sincerely hope she keeps this behaviour up until at least the spring thaw, so she can be buried in our little pet cemetery. But if she takes a turn for the worse, we are prepared to do what is best for her. FWIW...I always have my vet come to the house. It just seems to make things a little bit easier....for both the dog and myself.
  11. When 11 yr old Bandit stopped eating just before Christmas- and the vets never did figure out why - we tried several different kinds of soft/stinky foods. The thing that got her back on track was 'Tripe'. It smells awful but as soon as I opened the can, she started drooling and gobbled it up. We got Lamb Tripe as she is on a lamb-based diet, but you can get fish - salmon I think- and beef,as well as Venison Tripe. Tripe is available at most pet food stores. We added small amounts of it to the gastro food from the vet, then slowly replaced that with a bit of her kibble. Within a week she was eating mostly kibble with a spoonful of Tripe.
  12. Nixon also visit an old age home. He is waiting for his testing, but the home allows him to come and visit. Billie and Bandit are both certified through St John Ambulance and have been visiting for many years. Our Bridge Dobergirl was also certified. It is the most rewarding volunteer work I have ever done.
  13. Cry a lot. Swear a lot. Remember the good times and smile!
  14. Nixon and his sisters send healing thoughts to Gracie. One of Nixon's best Greyhound friends here is named 'Gracie'...
  15. Finally got time to check in on Dude and am so happy to read some really greyt news! Keep up the good work, buddy!!
  16. Perhaps he's chilly. Nixon wears his little light weight fleece coat nearly 24/7 these days. He had his jammies on all weekend and yesterday as it was really cold up here. Our Bridge Dobergirl would wake up if she moved around in her sleep and her blanket came off. Putting her fleece on kept her warm even if the blanket slipped off. Then Ijust clued in and kept the lightweight coat on aalmost full time.
  17. Continuing to send good thoughts Harley's way.
  18. Checking in...so glad to read that our 00-Dude is coming along nicely. Keep up the good work, buddy! And yup...if it was me, I might take one more night with professional eyes watching him and one more day to get organized. On the other hand...I can well imagine how anxious you must be to just have him home again.
  19. Checking in... Glad surgery went smoothly. Hugs to all. Nancy, Nixon & the Girls
  20. Nancy, Nixon & his sisters will have our buddy 00-Dude in our thoughts all day. And many for Chris
