  3. We've had Nixon for 9 months. He settled into home life easily...wasn't afraid of anything here in the house or the yard. And...yes...he slept a lot! But he is just now starting to understand about playing. We have 2 other dogs...both senior girls...but he really does not show a lot of interest in them. He does not play with stuffies, balls or other toys. He loves his chew bones and kongs filled with food. I started taking him to the local dog park in the summer, as there are other Greyhounds there who like to really play and run. He would go and meet them at the gate but then come right back to my side. He enjoyed the humans way more than the other playing dogs. Finally - about 2 months ago - he decided that they looked like they were having fun and he joined them....little short bursts to start, but now he's 'one of the gang' and LOVES his weekly play dates. Funnily...only the 4 Greys play with each other. They pretty much ignore the other dogs there. So...like the others have said...give your boy time. Lots of time. And Nixon still sleeps a LOT!
  4. :nod :nod And you have to be vigilent about doing it at least twice a day. Nail bed infections can be nasty and they can be hard to clear up. YES YES YES! Nixon did a nasty number on one of his hind nails and was on one antiobiotic for 2 weeks, then a second for an addtional three weeks. Our vet recommended doing the epsom salt soak twice daily. We have also been vigilant in keeping his nails (especially the torn one) filed down super short, so they are not touching the ground.
  5. If you can't / don't want to get raw tripe, you can buy the canned stuff at most pet food stores.
  6. I give my two senior girls (non greys) a spoonfule of tripe mixed into their kibble twice a day....however, neither of them have kidney issues. What does your vet say? We originally got it for Bandit (11 yr old PointerX) last fall when out of the blue she refused to eat anything except cheese. All her blood work was normal, as was her physical exam. She was acting a bit depressed and was not her usual 'Energiser Bunny' self. She LOVED the tripe! After only a couple of days mixing tripe with the soft gastro food, we started adding the kibble back in and she perked right up. Within a couple of weeks she was back to her old self, gobbling up her kibble. We have continued to add a spoonful of the tripe to her kibble 'just because' and our 14 yr old GSDx also loves getting a bit of it, as well. Tripe smells just awful, which is what makes it so helpful for picky eaters. We got Lamb Tripe - it is green - as we feed a lamb-based kibble. You can also get Beef tripe...it is not as green. Hope this helps.
  7. Not all Costco sell the same products. And they change their stock quickly. One day you'll find the regular cedar-filled beds, and another day you'll find the foam-filled ones. I have the cedar ones, and when they got a bit flat I added in a piece of egg-crate foam. Works greyt.
  8. I am not a dog trainer, but have owned multiple dogs over the past 20++ years. I had one bully and it was hard HARD work to get and keep her in line. The Alpha of my current pack is a 14 yr old GSDx who is very lame with arthritis and very often afraid of her own shadow......but she is atill Alpha. Just a 'look' from her, flick of the ear or nod of the head and the others fall into place. No agression at all. I totally agree with PhillyPups....the shy dog should be rehomed ASAP...not only for his personal safety, but for his mental stability. Bully dog needs to be disciplined sternly by head of house...you! Meanwhile, crate Bully and let shy boy have some freedom.
