Grey Pup (4/9)

  1. Looking for a greyt sitter in Aberdeen, SD last week of March (24-28th). I only need daycare for my two medium/low energy; male thinks he's in charge and can be bossy.... female is often timid when I'm not around and suffers from SA (reason for needing daycare). I have to travel out there and dogs would have to be left 8hrs alone. Your house or my friends house is fine. I work from home so this would be a huge change for them so I have to get them a babysitter. Any other information you need or recommendations that would be great. Contact me here or PJR107@gmail.com Thanks in advance! pj
  2. I think I'm concerned that how I treat my dog (more vet visits than emergency visit) will also be a factor. One insurance listed vet visits not covered (didn't appear to state which kind of vet visits which is what bothered me) and I would rather take my dog to a familiar face for their comfort as well as mine if the office is open (and yes, they have GREAT hours). Has anyone seen that to be a problem with insurance? And I'll keep in mind about the VPI.... we have USAA and they are great with most insurance so I've gotta call. And they will even have a "normal" conversation instead of speaking "insurance-ese" to me I was thinking that too. We do that for other things so its not a big deal to do that. -pj
  3. I think your thread was the big one I was reading on pet insurance. I know how much things have cost with our other dogs and we have been very lucky that nothing has been majorly wrong with them. My DH, while we've talked about how far is to far and how much it might cost, I know how much he does grumble when it comes to our dr visit costs.... and we are the humans! I'm definately going to keep shopping around. I think our main(car and home) insurance group offers pet insurance but I have to call. So far I'm looking at around $75/month for both dogs. Not terrible and there might be discounts on top of that (one of the groups offered 5% for signing up online, 10% for AAA and military... things like that) Oh the things we do for our puppies!!!!!
  4. So I've been looking at pet insurance and wondering if its not worth it. I know how much vet visits cost but I'm always worried about the "what if" that seems to come up. Maybe its just that there is a large collection of greyhound owners that do go to extraordinary measures (please don't flame on this.... I'm not sure how to exactly put it so that nobody feels offended) to maintain their dogs in their old age as well as the "not returning the dogs when they get older" policy with adoption agencies (again, please dont flame, I know why its there). I know that greyhounds are one of the most un-imbred breed and there are problems inherent with anyone be it age, race, breed, temperament..... but is is worth getting insurance? Mine are young (3 in december) so is it better to look/insure now so there are no problems later on (preexisting conditions)? From reading in the forums, it looks like Health Paws, Trupanion and Embrace are the top three recommended but I've also seen PetPlan being recommended on the web. Is there any that covers yearly checkups (preventative health plan) or regular dental? Is your residence make one better than others (I live in suburbia with many busy streets)? Or is it better to just put the "insurance" money into a savings plan for future medical? thank you in advance! -pj
  5. OMG that was great! I can see the water cooler conversation in the morning..... "So I went to bed with the vacuum...." it's better than coffee! -pj
  6. Thank you to everyone about dremel info. We started her training and while the dog doesn't mind the tool itself, she really hates the sound of it on. Reminds me of sitting in the dentist waiting room and listening to the noise in the back.... So I broke down and took her to that big box store to get her nails grinded....I think I was more nervous than her! But all went well and now she has short nails Thanks again and hopefully she will get used to the noise of mine but until then at least I know they can get done without her carrying on. -pj
  7. For the newbie who owns a dremel and "new use" bells went off..... Is this an alternate to clipping or in addition to clipping? Or both? PJ <--the wimp who still has to take the dog to the groomer to get them cut
  8. My son wishes our puppy liked peanut butter because he wants to get the box with the greyhound on it. We get the beef roll thingies and Denise *LOVES* them. And yes, they are made in the USA -pj
  9. There are some days I'm glad my pup is sooooo picky when it comes to treats. We found on at Trader Joes and I usually don't think twice when I get stuff from there. My sweetie would rather treat on people food from the magic box than waste her time on doggy stuff... she's become known as the cheese hound to several of our friends cause its her favorite! -pj
  10. Hi from Wallingford PA! Congrats on your cutie -pj
  11. I've never heard neem being used at a bug repellant but I know it works great as a itchy skin healer (from bites, cuts or other minor skin irritations). I found it when one of my guinea pigs was suffering from skin yuckies and then it migrated to me trying it for dog hot spots (yeah, it worked!) to me using it for razor burn (and I'm the one with really really sensitive skin!) Its just a bottle of "neem spray for cats and dogs" that I found in the organic pet store. There is also bug repellant clothing/fabric that may help.... if you can find it in posh pooch ware -PJ
  12. Mine just farts. Farts when she's sleeping, farts when she's happy, farts when she's stretching..... you get the idea. I've gotten them less with our new dog food combo that we've switched her to (just have to put up with fishy breath). I'm going to try the yogurt ... does it make a difference between greek, regular or probiotic? We usually have the regular boring kind but wanted to make sure before handing out the goodies -pj
  13. Dogs can reprimand us humans for our misbehavior.... growl when we try and take a bone from them is one good example. I have had a dog (another breed) that could tell time and "punish" you for being late. If you left her for three hours, she was ok; at the start of that fourth hour, she would find something in the house, chew it and leave it in the front hallway for you to find when you came home. No, she is not being reprimanded for peeing, not unless I catch her. Yes, we have been doing the separation training and continue with it. As far as I know its not a UTI but Im checking with the vet anyway. Its just something that started and had wondered if anyone else encountered something similar. We've had little things crop up as we go... some additional barking (she didnt like the lawn care guys not coming over to say hi to her) to a weird walking gait (holly leaves!) And I did find a solution to the kong filler.... frozen cream cheese was suggested. Don't know if anyone else encountered this issue. thanks again pj
  14. So my GH has learned a new trick... she pees on our bed when I have to leave her in the house. Its happened two times in the last week. I know she doesn't have to go and I know she is still a bit anxious when I leave (barks for a bit then gets quiet). Suggestions? She doesn't eat when I leave (haven't found one she loves yet...she isnt interested in peanut butter) and I was thinking of crating her at this point. We havent done that because I do leave her infrequently. Could this do more stress than good? Other simple cause? Its gotten dramatically warm... could be the issue.... who knows! Thanks! pj
