  1. Yes, that is my two babies. I was so excited when they asked me if they could put their picture in the catalog. I remember when I told the director of my group I was changing her name from Pitch to Peace. You can't change a 8 1/2 year old hound's name!! I said- you wanna bet!!! She learned her new name so fast. A pretty name for a pretty girl. My Peace.
  2. Welcome to the amazing, life changing world of retired racing greyhounds. You do know this is a disease for which there is no cure?!! It will be so much fun watching your hound as he starts to realize that all this good stuff is for him and that you and your boyfriend belong to him. This site is the best, everyone is so supportive and kind. Rest assured that if you have a challange or issue there are people here who have worked thru the same thing and can offer advice. May you have many, many happy years with your boy and may this be the first of many hounds to come into your heart and home. Greetings from the SouthSide of Chicago- Jan and Luka
  3. Thank you everyone for your kind words and thinking of my girl Peace. This is such a comfort to me and my family. I am just so glad she had an easy passing.
  4. Oh what a naughty boy to scare Momma while she is out of town! Glad to hear he seems to be OK. Sending hugs your way! Jan and Luka
  5. My beloved girl Peace left this world yesterday. To say I am shattered is an understatement. I was lucky enough to have her in my home for almost 5 wonderful years. I adopted her after a number of my friends at Regap of Illinois adopted older Momma dogs. When I went along with my friend Rita to pick up her Momma dog Chance the director of my group, Mona Moore asked me when I was going to adopt a second greyhound. I told her my Mom was the sticking point. She said she had the perfect girl for me and brought out a sweet, shiney black girl named Grey's Pitch Black. We came up with a plan where my Mom and I would "happen" to meet Mona at our local vet. She would "happen" to bring Pitch along and ask us to foster her. (This story appeared in the Celebrating Greyhound Magazine in the article "The Accidental Foster".) The plan worked and my new girl wasn't in our house more than an hour when I heard my Mom say "don't be scared, this is your home now and we will take care of you." I knew she was mine. We changed her name to Peace and she joined my Luka at meet and greets every weekend. She loved people and always pushed her way to the front of the pack to get some loving. Peace didn't retire until she was 8 1/2 years old. She deserved every soft bed, every single cookie and all the loving she could ask for. It was my honor and joy to make her happy. Every night she would have to visit me in bed for one last loving touch before she went to sleep. She walked with me to the front door every morning as I went to get the newspaper and she chattered loudly and asked for a hug. She always told me how happy she was with her life. Peace and I went to Louisville together one year to the Shamrock Greyhound Event. I wanted her to have a trip with just the two of us together. We made some beautiful memories. Everyone loved that pretty black girl in her peace collar and peace skirt. After Peace decided she no longer liked to go for rides in my Jeep I retired her from meet and greets and greyhound trips. She took care of my family when Luka and I were not there. Peace ran 177 races and had two litters of puppies. She loved to run. In her dreams she was running as her feet and legs moved on her bed. She would growl and bark but she never did that when she was awake. She did however, bark at Luka and my fox terrier Scout when she thought they were getting too close to stepping on her on her bed. Oh no! Sister yelled at them and boy did they respect her space after that. It was funny to see those two try their best to avoid walking past her bed as she napped. I wish we had more time together. But no matter how long, it would never be enough. She packed a lot of life in her retirement and I am glad I was able to help her write a beautiful end to her life story. I truly hope at that last moment she looked back and said "Wow- that was a good time!". Peace was loved by all who met her and her Aunties and Uncles at Regap. Thank you Dr Wahl at Avenue Animal Hospital in Tinley Park, Il for giving her a gentle passing. Your team was so kind and compassionate. Thank you to Kathy and Phyllis who were there at the hospital to comfort and care for Luka as we said goodbye. Thank you to all my friends who offered to come with us as we said goodbye, who sent e-mails and called to offer their sympathy and support. Run free sweet daughter, run free and know your Momma loves you so. With a sad heart, Jan and Luka
  6. Sending best wishes for you and your boy. It is so hard not to panic when our hounds are hurting or sick but if your ER vet is not greyhound experienced I would try not to panic and wait for your regular vet and like someone said look to Greytalk for support. I went to a health seminar by Jenifer Barker and she recommends giving greyhounds 7 and old 1/4 of a lose dose chewable asprin once a day. It helps keep the platelets be less sticky and it not a large enough dose to cause any issues with other medications or dentals.
  7. So glad your boy is home and will no longer have the eye pain. Hugs to you both!!
  8. I told a friend about this and she ordered some so we can try it. Sounds great. Anything I can do to help my hounds be healthy and happy. I already use Fresh Factors, Joint Health and coconut oil.
  9. I am so sorry you had to let him go. I "met" him at Mountain Hounds last year, I think Ducky had his cut out. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses- Jan, Luka and Peace
  10. What an amazing journey you both had together. He knew true love and comfort in your heart and home. He will always be with you. Thank you for sharing your beloved with us and for all the galgos who found their forever homes because of your story. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses, Jan, Luka and Peace
  11. I have the leashes with the lobster clips (thank you GEM store) and the clip you mentioned, I got mine at ACE Hardware for under $6. Super strong.
  12. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your most handsome boy. I know the pain feels like you can't catch your breath but it will ease a bit and you will be able to talk about the good times and wonderful memories without crying. Run free sweet boy, your Momma loves you so. Sending greyhound kisses and gentle hugs, Jan, Luka and Peace
  13. How cute! I love both breeds and look forward to hearing more stories and photos of your two beautiful pups.
  14. Welcome from the far South Side of Chicago! You will learn lots of cool stuff on this site. Welcome to the disease which there is no cure so just learn to embrace it- greyhounds!!! How quickly they become a obsession and a passion.
  15. He gets a bed time cookie and eats a lot right before bed. Do you think a pedcid first thing in the AM or at bed time would help? I know it isn't water because it is thicker than water and much more slippery.
  16. My Luka has done this a few times now, the last time being this morning. It isn't that he reteches or acts like a dog who is going to vomit, all of a sudden he will open his mouth and this clear, slippery liquid comes out of his mouth. This time he didn't even stop walking while it happened. It is really hard to see on the floor and I am afraid that some day someone will take a bad fall because of it. Has anyone else have a hound that does this? Any idea what is causing it? There is no food in the liquid. I don't think requires a trip to the vet but I will mention it to him when I take Peace in for her nail trim and follow up.
  17. How did you control the bleeding? WIth that many teeth pulled I would imagine that there would be bleeding.
  18. So sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Poodle. He was special. I will miss hearing about him. May his memories give you comfort at this sad time. Run free sweet boy, your Momma loves you so. Janice, Luka and Peace
  19. I like POPS Organic shampoos. Has a lot of natural oils , it rinses off very easy and your hands are so nice and soft.
  20. My Luka has a bad cut in between his toes. I tried putting the Vetericine spray in between his toes and bandaging and vet wrapping his foot. He kept pulling the bandage off. Then I tried just using the boot. He would get that off too. Had him at the vet last week. He said leave the boot and bandage off so it gets air. He did a laser treatment to help the healing. Gave me a nasty tasting gel to put on his foot to stop the licking. It does work. although he was licking some today so I put the gel on again. He has had cuts before between his toes. Never see it happen and he never cries when it happens.
  21. I am so sorry to hear of Arrow's passing. I was lucky enough to meet him at Mountain Hounds one year. Run free sweet boy, your Momma and Poppa loves you so. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses- Janice, Luka and Peace
  22. Wow, I can't believe these prices. Our vet who is the vet for our area greyhound rescue is very reasonable. I don't think I have paid more than $350 and that was with 4 teeth removed. I couldn't afford to do a dental every year at over $1000. I don't think most people could.
  23. My Luka hates to walk and he thinks unless he is walking to my Jeep for a ride it is stupid. He looks so miserable I stopped walking him. My girl Peace just turned 13 and loved to walk. Maybe some time I will have a hound that likes to walk.
  24. What a lovely tribute you wrote about your best friend. You were so lucky to have found each other. Thank you for helping her write a most beautiful end to her life story. You sound like a wonderful greyhound Mom, I hope someday you will honor your friend and bring another hound into your heart and home. Run free sweet girl, your Momma loved you so. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses-Jan, Luka and Peace
