  1. Our group already lost one greyhound to the heat. Better safe than sorry.
  2. Wow- what a horrible life he had until he met the wonderful greyhound group and you. I had no idea that greyhounds who are blood donors are treated like that. It is not right, not right at all. You gave him a fabulous end of life and while it wasn't long enough he was able to leave this earth knowing what true love and compassion is. You gave him the greatest gift of all- a family to call his own. He didn't know that life could be so sweet. God bless you for taking him in and making the ending of his story the best in the world. I know you would say that you got more from him than he did from you but you all won in the end. God bless Doc and may his memories give you comfort in the days ahead. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses- Janice, Luka and Peace from Oak Lawn, Illinois
  3. Welcome from the far south side of Chicago. I love your part of the world! Many happy memories of a train trip from Chicago to Salt Lake City than a car ride to Park City. This site is wonderful to get all the answers you need. It is so much fun watching your hound realize that this amazing new life is really hers and it gets better every day. I just celebrated my 4th gotcha day with my heart boy Luka and I still can't believe how lucky I am to have found him. I also have a older moma hound who will be 10 in June. Sweet as pie and so loving. Greyhounds wiggle their way into your heart and soul and there is no going back- you get hooked and you will laugh and smile every day. Congratulations!!
  4. You have made a hound very, very happy! Congratulations and enjoy watching her as she becomes more and more comfortable in her new life. I love the photo of her smiling. Priceless!!
  5. I have been taking my fox terrier to a VCA vet in the Chicago suburbs for over 15 years. They are pretty high tech and I have always felt like we were getting excellent care. But now that I have two greyhounds I have found that our "offical" vet of my adoption group has much, much lower prices. He has a very small practice and not all of the fancy equipment that the VCA vets do. And he does send some of his patients to local VCA for more testing and ultra-sounds when necessary.
  6. I once complained to Kaytee Bird Food Company when I found broken glass and bones in a bag of parrot food. All I got was some 50 cent coupons and their food was really expensive. They didn't seem overly concerned that my parrot could have gotten hurt.
  7. Your hound won't hold the dental against you. He could be having some pain or discomfort in his mouth and will be grateful that something was done to help him. If he has bad teeth or real stinky breath a brushing won't do. He really needs to be put under and a proper dental done. Make sure you take him to a greyhound savy vet who understands how different greyhounds are especially when putting them under. I have to take my 9 year old for her first real dental. I have a wonderful vet that my group uses and he has taken care of hundreds if not thousands of greyhounds. I am still very nervous but I know it will be the best thing for her. She may lose some teeth but if you have ever had a tooth ache you know how much better you feel after the dentist. Hope this helps! Janice, Luka and Peace- the greyhounds
  8. I went to Mountain Bound Hounds in Gatlinburg Tenn. and ended up leaving before any events really started. I could not take the heat and the humidity. I had brought my two hounds 5 & 9 with me. On Saturday night I was sitting with the 5 year old who has a pretty bare butt and back legs. I noticed red spots in his inner thigh and around his penis. He has about 15 or so of them. My 9 year old who has thick hair has about 7-8 on her back inner thigh. They do not seem to be bothering them and are not itchy at all. What could this be and do I need to take them to the vet? I thought they might be chiggers but I read that they would be very itchy and my dogs aren't paying any attention to the spots at all. The spots do not look as red as they did on Saturday night.
  9. Welcome from Oak Lawn, Illinois. What group did you adopt thru?
  10. SOmeone asked me this question and since I have no idea I thought I would ask all of you: if a dog eats a bird that has the West Nile disease will the dog get it? Can dogs be affected by West Nile?
  11. This may be a dumb question but here it is- what if a dog eats a bird that has the west nile disease, will the dog become sick? Do dogs get west nile?
  12. I never see my brand of dog food listed- Drs Foster and Smith lamb and rice kibble. I also mix in Nutro Dental.
  13. I got a call from my Mom about my fox terrier when he was 9 months old. He was staining like he had to poop but nothing was coming out. He was also drooling and panting. i left work and rushed him to the vet. The vet said that dogs can't tell exactly what they need to do so they think they need to poop when they really need to pee. My 9 month old was full of bladder stones and had one stuck in the uretha that could have killed him if not removed. Once the stones were out they were tested and he was put on a prescription diet. It was also discovered that he had too much acid in his body and he doesn't get enough oxygen in his blood. Any strenuous activity could cause him to collapse and die. Eight years and over $22,000 later he is still with us. Never know there is a thing wrong with him except he get winded and pants a lot over the slightest activity.
  14. I wonder if having a second greyhound (if possible) would help. Maybe you can try mix up how you prepare to leave for the day. If you grab your keys last try putting them someplace else so you grab them first or have them in your pocket. Try leaving and be sure not to make any acknowledgement to the dog that you are going and then come back after a couple of minutes. Keep doing that if the dog seems ok. Then extend the time that you are going to 20 minutes and so forth. If it is really bad and you can't get a second dog can you take the dog to a doggie day care during work, or do you have any friends with greyhounds that can do sit during the day for you? Just a few ideas. Good luck.
  15. Hello- I am new to this site. I adopted my first greyhound from Regap of Illinois one year ago last Sunday. His racing name was Grey's Island Mocha and I changed it to Luka. He is a red brindle with a black mask and he will be 3 years old on May 11th. I have dreamed of getting a greyhound for over 10 years and in that time I did my homework and a lot of research. Luka is everything I could have hoped for and more. He is the absolute love of my life. We both attend meet and greets and other adoption events and he lives for these events. I love to make my boy happy. I have met some of the nicest, most wonderful people thru Regap. Adopting has changed my life. My Mom says I am always smiling now because of Luka. I have had dogs and animals all my life and loved them with all my heart but the bond between a person and their greyhound is so special and so intense, there is nothing like it. My dream is to have 3 greyhounds. Besides Luka I have a wired hair fox terrier Scout who is 8 yrs old, a yellow naped Amazon parrot Fred is 23 years old and a Solomon Island Eclectus named Solomon who will be 16 this month. I live on the South Side of Chicago.
  16. Hello everyone! I am new to this site. I adopted my first greyhound from Regap of Illinois last year on April 6th. His racing name was Grey's Island Mocha but I changed it to Luka. I have been crazy about greyhounds for over 10 years and did a ton of research before I adopted. He is the absolute love of my life. We spend a lot of time attending meet and greets to promote adoption and Luka lives for these events. I love to make my boy happy! I have met the most wonderful people because of Regap. My life is so much better and I have never been so happy. Besides Luka I have a 8 year old wired hair fox terrier named Scout and two parrots- one a yellow naped amazon named Fred and a Solomon Island Eclectus named Solomon. My dream is to have 3 greyhounds but right now my Mom says we have enough animals in our house. I am really impressed by this site and I am really grateful for the Amber Alert section. It is wonderful to see people from all over the country helping to recover lost hounds. I appreciate the kindness you all show to hounds in need. I live on the South Side of Chicago. Thanks! Janice
