  1. wow- I am glad someone asked this question. I have been using a very small piece of bread when I give my hounds milk thistle after shots and heart worm meds. I wasn't 100% sure that it would be ok, I was told by my parrot vet to cut the bread out because of the increase of yeast in their body. But parrots are much smaller than greyhounds. I love this site- I learn new things about my hounds all the time.
  2. I am stunned and deeply saddened to hear about sweet little Knuckles. I followed his story and was so sad when his Momma Kathy passed. God bless you little fella, so many people that you never even met loved you so much. And now you are with your Mom. Sending gentle hugs and greyhounds kisses to Don and all who loved and will miss him so. Janice, Luka and Peace
  3. Welcome to another Chicago adopter- did you get them from Greyhounds Only? I got my two from Regap of Illnois. Have hung out at a few Greyhound Only events- all greyhound people are cool. Saw a bunch of them at the Shamrock Louisville event in July. I think it would be fun to have brothers or sisters. One of my friends has sisters- same parents but from different litters. Your boys are beautiful, have fun! Maybe I'll see you around sometime. Janice, Luka and Peace from the far South Side of Chicago.
  4. Your writing is exactly how I feel about my heart hound Luka. I am so sorry you lost your beloved, he was so handsome and wonderful. You can tell he loved his Momma so. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses to your sad heart- Janice, Luka and Peace
  5. I am just heart broken to read this!!! The poor hound deserved more time. Sending gentle hugs to her Mom and everyone who read her story and grew to love her. I am so sad.
  6. I have a couple in my first aid kit for my hounds.
  7. I am heart broken to see Bee's name on this thread. I have come to know her from all of the wonderful posts your wrote and your fantastic photos. I love this girl and I am so sad for your loss. That you for sharing her and letting your GT family get to know her. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses- Janice, Luka and Peace from Chicago
  8. I think greyhound puppies are born tired! Mine sleep almost all day except for trips outside to go potty and to give my Mom kisses. I have a 11 1/2 year old Fox Terrier who does not sleep at all during the day unless he is crated. He will not lay down and take naps. He is on duty until he is crated in the evening when I have my parrots out. I have two extremes!
  9. How awful ! I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We had better be reunited with our hounds and other pets otherwise I am going to be really mad!! It isn't Heaven without the animals.
  10. Peace never chews, always inhales and then coughs some up. Luka chews more and especially chews his cookies, he really savors them and is always the last one eating.
  11. I was holding my breath as I read your update. Your baby wants to keep fighting! What a good girl. We are all hoping and praying for your both. Hang in there sweet girl, you are stronger than you know!!
  12. I have been thinking of you both since I read this post yesterday. It made me cry. I am so sorry your girl is feeling so bad. I hope that each day brings better news from the vet and she can come home soon. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses to you both- Janice, Luka and Peace
  13. I am so sorry to hear you lost your heart hound Elton. Even though you were suffering the loss you know was coming you were able to end his suffering. You did right by him and that is the best testimate to true love. I hope that his memories will bring you joy one day as you look back on his wonderful life. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses- Janice, Luka and Peace
  14. What a lovely tribute to a wonderful boy. You can tell that he loved you both so much. I know your heart will never be the same but what wonderful memories he has left you. Sending gentle hugs and greyhound kisses to all who loved him- Janice, Luka and Peace
  15. Glad to hear it wasn't the dreaded "C" word. Good luck Peace and feel better soon- from the Chicago Peace hound.
  16. Retired racing greyhounds have never seen other breeds of dogs until they are retired. I have had my girl for over a year and a half and I still don't think she acknowledges my fox terrier as a dog! This new world is a lot to take in and some adjust as if they were born to be in a home on a couch and others seem to need a lot more time to take it all in. Let your hound set the pace. My big issue with dog parks is that most owners (non-grey) aren't paying attention to their dogs and are too far away to react fast enough if something happens. Greyhound skin is so thin, a playful nip can end up as a trip to the vet. Better to socialize greys one on one with other breeds. Every once in a while you will find a grey who is a breed snob, loves all greys but doesn't like any other dogs.
  17. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I never had the pleasure to meet her but learned about her on Greytalk. I am so sorry for her family and friends as she sounded like an amazing woman. God bless her and all those mourning her loss.
  18. You have a greyhound named Peace, so do I!!! How cool is that. I have no advice but I hope that you get some answers soon on your hound. Janice, Luka and Peace from the south side of Chicago.
  19. Thank you for taking both hounds! I think you will find that your new boy will thank you a million times over for giving him a new life. What fun you all will have!!

    Remembering Jed

What a happy relaxed boy. I am so sorry that he is gone. You made him very happy right from the moment he came into your life. Hugs to you and prayers for your sweet boy Jed. Janice, Luka and Peace
  21. You will need martingale collars for walking the hounds. Since their heads are smaller than their necks if you try to walk them in a tag/buckle collar it will slip over it's head. Greyhounds have bad teeth so you will need a toothbrush and doggie tooth paste. Stuffed toys are a favorite but don't be surprised if it takes them a long time to learn to play, some never do. Good quality chew bones are good too. My Luka says not to forget cookies, retired racers need lots of them. Exclusively Pet makes wonderful people grade dog treats. These are Luka's favorite along with Mother Nature brand Dot's Delights Large dog treats. Greyhounds have little to no body fat so soft comfy places to sleep is a must. And Luka says pillows are a greyhounds' best friend, preferably two, one of his or her head and one for his or her butt. Raised feeders- some people love them, some don't- All of my friends in my rescue group use them with no issues. Make sure to have a camera available at all times because greyhounds make the perfect subject of all of your photos! Have fun, the waiting to meet your new hound and bring them home is the hardest part!
  22. Welcome from the Southwest side of Chicago! Once you bring your new hound into your heart and home your life will never be the same- and that is in a good way!!! There is something magical about these hounds that fill you up with passion and takes over your life. You will learn a lot on this web site. Congratulations and be sure to post pictures of your new friend!!!
  23. My fox terrier had been on a kidney diet since he was 9 months old with very limited treats- either prescription from the vet or Pupcorn. Once I got my first greyhound, who actually drops mouthfull of his Blue Buffalo and Newman's Own Organic for the fox terrier to eat he developed pancreatitis. We switched him to the Science W/D dry diet and he does eat some of the dog's Mother Nature dog treats. He still gets some of the greyhound's food as well but he seems to be doing well. Haven't had to take him back for any more treatment of the pancreatitis and his last blood test was pretty good. Haven't had to take him back for any more treatment of the pancreatitis and his last blood test was pretty good. When my dog was diagnosed with kidney disease I was looking for a treat to give him that the vet would approve. I actually talked to one of the people who developed the treat called Pupcorn, made by Sunshine Treats (available at Petsmart and Walmart and on-line) and they said there is very little in the treat and that dogs with restricted diets should be able to eat this without any problems. The company even sent my vet an large information packet along with a case of their products. At that time they were getting ready to send a case of Pupcorn and the information to every vet in the US to spread the word about their treats. My fox terrier love it and it has never caused any problems with all the medical issues he has.
