  1. When we got our first grey, Dawn, we had a lot to learn. She did NOT like to be messed with when she was on her bed. She would growl and show me her "big teef." This is exactly the same thing she did to other dogs. She wasn't being mean, she was just telling me how she felt about being bothered on her bed. She came to us after being fostered for only 7 days. She was scared of everything. BUT, I listened to her and eventually she settled into our household. We had a young DS at the time and taught him to stay away from her when she was on her bed. We adopted another hound one year later. He taught her how to be a pet. It took about 2 months after Ziggy came in for her to figure out how to be a pet. She played with him but he wasn't so sure he liked that. She ran into him once and he had a bruise the size of a baseball glove on his side. He never ran with her in the house after that. She was a great dog! I am so glad that we worked with her because I miss her every single, solitary day! I hope that you can let go of the hurt and let another hound grace your life. They are awesome pets with maybe a couple of quirks!
  2. He seems fine this morning. He is laying on the side where he got the injection. Our normal vet puts the shot in between his shoulder blades. He just had so much pain! I am sure glad I had the Rimadyl. If I hadn't had that though, what else over the counter could I have given him?
  3. Dawson is 7 years old and a big baby! Its all my fault, I know it. He had his shot around 4. He didn't start acting funny until about 6:30. He is resting comfortably now and his breathing is more normal too. I just love him so much I don't want him to be miserable. My DS looked on the internet and found out that swelling around the injection site is common.
  4. Dawson had his distemper vaccine today. He started panting ,limping and pacing. We went to visit my mom and he would not lay down. We only stayed about 45 minutes. When we got home, I took his temp and it was 100.1. Next, I gave him a rimadyl because I could tell he was in pain. He was crying when he tried to lay down. I feel guilty because when I got him to the vet, it wasn't our normal vet is was someone else. In my heart, I knew I should leave but I didn't. I don't know what to do or if I even need to do anything else. He is resting now. Advice? Please?
  5. Our newest houndie girl had tapes too. We ONLY saw them in her first poop of the day. I am not sure why but we didn't see them otherwise. And, we did give her Drontal. It is expensive but it does the trick and quickly!
  6. I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like she was a fun girl! Thank you for sharing her with us!
  7. I wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers. It is so scary when they bleed like that! I am thinking positive thoughts for you!
  8. We also have 3 hounds, two boys and a crazy female. The boys are almost 7 and 10. The crazy girl is 2 and a barrel of fun. Both of our boys are very laid back, big, sweethearts. I think a laid back boy sounds like what you need in your pack. Beware, the big guys are snuggle bunnies!(at least both of mine are) Good Luck!
  9. Congratulations! They are both gorgeous. Good luck with them. Bob sounds like a character!(I just got done reading your other thread.) I look forward to Bob stories.
  10. We have had 4 hounds. Only our first was not very affectionate. After we had her for a couple of months, she was more affectionate. She greeted me every day when I came home from school with a toothy grin which at first scared me to death. She would hug me all the way down the hall! She never got up on the furniture. Our next grey was super sweet and taught our first how to be a pet. He had SA but that went away pretty fast. Our third is a snuggle bug. He is super sweet and loves everyone! He thinks everyone loves him too. Our last one is super sweet but a PITA too. She is just two so she is still a baby. I wouldn't have traded any of them in for a new one! They are the most perfect dog I have ever had. I grew up with Boston Terriers and Cocker Spaniels. They were much grouchier than my hounds. Good Luck!
  11. I am so sorry for the loss of that pretty girl! When I checked out her picture I realized that she and my Dawn were half sisters. Dawn's dad was Flying Oak too! She was also quite the character!
  12. I am sorry to hear she has lost so much weight. When my old girl started losing weight, I started giving her 1/2 of a bottle of Ensure each night. She loved it! It really helped her to gain some. I also give them chicken and cottage cheese in their supper bowls. Good Luck!
  13. I am sitting here crying with and for you. I too lost a sweet girl to renal failure. It is so hard to watch as they waste away. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
  14. Dawson also grieved for a long time after Dawn passed. He walked around the house with his head held low. He needed Ziggy a lot and they had never been close. They needed each other. But, it still didn't help. The only thing that made Dawson happy was the addition of Myrtle, our 2 year old spitfire.
  15. Well, I have had greys that love to be loved on but I have also had greys that loved to be loved on when THEY wanted to be loved on. When you first get a grey, it's not smart to bother them when they are on their bed. So, I think a grey would be good for you but I can't imagine having any other kind of dog. As I type this I am getting snuggles from our old man. He wants lovin when he wants lovin. Even he has been more of a cuddlebug lately! Good Luck!
  16. Dawson had a vertical tear too and they stitched it up. Until you get him to the vet, I put a gauze pad on it and wrapped it around his body. I have also put a pair of my DS's boxer shorts to keep him from bothering it. Good Luck!
  17. She is pretty good today. Only the foot that was broken is still sore. The vet told me to change the dressing daily. It looks pretty good. I guess I didn't explain it too well. She was doing twirly-twirlies and ran forward and suddenly she was loose. I noticed it right away. She is only 2 and we have only had her for less than 3 months, so she took off after some cats. Our neighbor lady feeds a lot of stray cats in her garage. There are a lot of marks in the mud there. It is obvious that this was where she went. So, we think that her feet got hurt when she jumped out of the fence in the front. We think she skidded across her blacktop driveway. I have seen the reflective collars at Petsmart. I think I will have to get her one.
  18. I always thought that I was a good greyhound mom, until last night. I had to take them to the baseball park to potty yesterday because one of my neighbors was outside shooting. Dawson is scared of boom-booms so we left. When I got the dogs out of the van, Myrtle's leash came off her collar. I just thought it had gotten pulled off. My DS and I both looked at the leash and it seemed all right. For the last walk of the night, we were out walking around 10P.M. We saw eyes out in the farmer's field. It was an opossum. The crazy thing came out right at us. Myrtle was so excited. She kept running toward me and went twirly, twirly several times. Well, we were almost home when I realized that I had two dogs and a leash. It was raining. There was no moonlight. She is black. I COULD NOT SEE HER! I rushed the boys home and yelled for my guys to get their shoes on and help me look for her. I went west, my DS went east, and my DH stayed home and whistled for her. She came to my DH. She was lost for about 10 minutes which felt like HOURS! When I got inside, there was blood everywhere. All four paws were bloody and her toenails were ragged. No one knows what happened to her. The vet said it looked like rug burns. There were no broken bones. Thank goodness! She is very tired, probably from the anaesthesia. I need to figure out a way to see her in the dark. I have thought about putting a scarf on her with reflective tape or something on it. She will not wear a coat. Any ideas? I wanted to share this because I thought it would never happen to me. It won't happen again. My DH got a carabiner clip and attached it to the leash where it attaches to the clip. Now she is doubly attached to her leash. I know you want pics. but I don't have any of her on my photobucket account now. I will try to post one tomorrow. Thanks for leting me tell my story. I got home today and called my mom. They put her in the hospital! WHAT A DAY!
  19. I could not believe my eyes! I am so sorry for your loss. I know many have already said this but he was one of my favorite hounds on GT! He had such a personality. He was strikingly handsome, too. He will be missed!
  20. Two of my greys have suffered from broken legs. They both walk a bit funny but it doesn't affect them in any other way. They still love to run and play and of course do zoomies. The worst thing about them is that they limp around some days. It does not affect them in any other way. To me, they are PERFECT! I guess I just love them more because they do have this problem. My mom really loves them up. I think it is because she can relate to them since she broke her hip. I guess what I am trying to say is that even if he is not "perfect" doesn't mean that he can't be the perfect dog for you.
  21. I have more wormer but I am not supposed to use it until October 1. She still wants to chew, chew, chew. Are all of her puppy teeth gone? I assumed that they were. I appreciate all of your help!
  22. Okay, we got Myrtle yesterday and she is always hungry! She has eaten 4 and a half cups of food today! Isn't that a lot? She is 21 months old. Should I be feeding her puppy food? She is very thin. The gentleman who picked her up for us told me to fatten her up. She was wormed a week ago. I am still seeing worms in her poo. Most of them are dead but some of them are still alive. Could this be part of the reason she is so hungry? I appreciate your words of wisdom! Judy
