I agree that you definitely need to stop him licking the wound otherwise he could make the wound even bigger and it could also become infected. A loose covering over the wound will prevent licking but still allow the air to get to it. If he were mine, I'd let the vet decide whether he needs re-stitching and/or antibiotics.
