Meandmy
Over the weekend Shadow popped up with a lump just below his back right knee. No pain, no discomfort, somewhat squishy and doesn't seem to be attached to anything. I took him in this morning and, at first, the vet thought it was just a fatty deposit. He aspirated and didn't like a few of the cells he saw, so sent off to pathology. I'll know more on Thursday or Friday. In the scheme of things this is probably pretty minor, but Shadow is almost 10 now and has aged so much in the last 6 months that his mortality is always at the front of my mind. He's my first dog, my heart dog, and I can't imagine how bad it will be when it's his time to go. Hopefully this is nothing and we have plenty of time yet. Fingers crossed Edited March 4, 2008 by Meandmy Quote Jenn, missing Shadow (Wickford Big Tom), Pretty Girl (C's Pretty) and Tori (Santoria)

Meandmy
Thanks everyone for the well wishes. As I said, I feel a bit silly as this could very well just be a minor thing - it's more the thought that my man is getting old and we likely have more days behind us than we do ahead of us that has me feeling so sad. I'll post an update as soon as I get one. Hopefully it will be good news! Meandmy
Well, after an extra-long wait (the pathology lab lost Shadow's slides) the results are in and Shadow's lump is cancerous They're not sure what kind of spindle-cell tumor they're looking at. The recommendation is to cut it out and send it in for a more definitive diagnosis. Poor pup. The lump is right on his knee - it's going to be tough to heal. Guess Shadow and I will be sleeping downstairs for a while. I'm just so bummed. Shadow's not quite 10. I'm not ready for this! HopeForHounds
Foxy's original path diagnosis was a spindle cell. The end diagnosis was hemangiopericytoma. She is 3 1/2 years post removal and still going strong at 13. Her tumor was on her front leg just to the side of the elbow. I'm praying you have similar long term results. Make sure when you get the path results back to consult with OSU and Dr Couto. Meandmy
Thanks everyone for your kind words (and Patricia for your orders that everything turn out ok!). I really appreciate them. Foxysmom, thanks for sharing your experience - I hope ours is the same! Oh no Jen! I am just seeing this post now. I don't know how I missed your original post a few weeks ago. I am so sorry. Do you know when they will be removing the tumor? Please, please let me know if you need anything. Thanks, Michelle. Shadow goes in for bloodwork on Saturday to make sure he's ok for surgery. My vet is being really great and rescheduled one of his other patients so Shadow could go in for surgery next week on Wednesday. Not that it's necessarily a rush, but because we had to wait so long for the results since the lab lost the first samples they sent. He knows how worried I am and is taking good care of us. The good news is that the lump hasn't grown at all and doesn't bother Shadow in the least. I'm hoping that this is a one-time deal. Thank you all again for keeping us in your thought Quote Jenn, missing Shadow (Wickford Big Tom), Pretty Girl (C's Pretty) and Tori (Santoria)

Guest armanntoo
Hay Brudda Shadow, my dad says you gots a lump. You be a good litle boy, and do what your mama says, and let the vet do her job, and you'll get better. In the meantime, take all of the scritches and cuddles that your mama wants to give you. Me and my Dad (The Dufus and Wendy Woo too) are thinking of you all the time. Wub Sista Mary
