Adopting out of state greyhound

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’ve been doing my research and have decided now is the time for me to adopt a greyhound. I put in an application at my local greyhound group and the waitlist is 6-8 months. I noticed GALT does out of state adoptions and they are a 15 hour drive from me (I’m in Arizona). I have no animals right now so essentially I would drive to Dallas and back to pick up this hound. Is this worth it or would this stress out a greyhound too much? Should I just be patient and wait the 6-8 months for my local agency to get back to me? Does anyone have experience adopting from out of state? Thanks for your time!

Our third greyhound was an "out of state" dog.  I saw his picture here on GT.  He was in New Hampshire and we lived in New Jersey.  At first, the group did not want to let us adopt him, but several people knew us as vendors and spoke up for us.  We did get him and he was a wonderful boy.

I don't think the travel time would be the the stressor for the dog - remember, many of them have traveled quite a bit from their farms to the track, to maybe another track or multiple, to the adoption group. It's more whether the group will adopt out of their normal area. The hesitation is often that if there's a problem, how would they get the dog back, and there's no one nearby to help with problems by observing the dog. Nothing insurmountable.

GPA Arizona and AAGI both show available hounds on their websites.  The group you are dealing with either has a big backlog of applicants, or has no scheduled  hauls coming in which is entirely possible due to it being summer.

Dog hauls,  public meet and greets at the pet supply stores, and play groups all pretty much stop in AZ in the summer due to the heat, and will resume in November.  There may still be a few small hauls done by individuals in those months, but the big haulers usually stop in the hottest months.

There are hounds available here in AZ. In fact quite a few have been coming in recently. Where in AZ are you? One issue with that type of road trip in this area is the heat. And, as has been mentioned, many groups don’t like to adopt out of their area. There is a group near me who, for politics regarding racing reasons, can’t get hounds. If you are working with them, obviously try another group. If it were me I wouldn’t wait but wouldn’t necessarily go to Dallas either. There are California groups with hounds also. Good luck. And, welcome to the club. 😊

SA greys said they only adopt to southern AZ and I am in Phoenix.

Greyhounds of the verde valley hasn’t updated their facebook in 5 years and they currently have 2 “available dogs” which leads me to believe they just haven’t updated their site. AAGI (AZ adopt a greyhound) commented to someone else asking and said they have 35 dogs and over 100 applicants with a 6-8 month waitlist, more if you want it to be a solo dog.

I’m in Tempe. I’ve reached out to all the groups with available hounds. I’ve looked at all the CA groups and none adopt out of California.

Unfortunately, this is going to be the norm now rather than the exception.  The number of greyhounds avaiable for adoption has plummeted since the end of racing in Florida.  All the adoptable dogs have already gone to closer groups and those of us who live in states west of the Mississippi have a really tough time finding enough dogs to fill a haul.  Yet the demand for them is even greater.  So months-long wait times are not uncommon.

If you don't mind a mix, take a look at the American Lurcher Project, and the Sighthound Underground.  There is also Save a Galgo Espanol (S.A.G.E) if a different type of sighthound might work for you (they have a CA group).

Good luck!

Wow. You’ve clearly done your homework. I got my last grey through sagreys but I’m close to Tucson. Maybe I would make that trip to Dallas after all. Good luck.

Yeah it’s safe to safe I have slight greyhound fever 😂. I’m debating flying to Dallas and then just renting a car and driving home and taking breaks when it’s not too hot out for the dog.
