Guest greytkidsmom Posted February 19, 2013 Share Posted February 19, 2013 Kebo's big dental is tomorrow. His lower canines must be hurting pretty bad - he won't even let me near his mouth to brush. He loves his poultry toothpaste. We ended up with Dr. Taylor, a dentist from Charlottesville, VA rather than OSU. Dr. Kellogg was so kind to help but the earliest they could take him was March or April. She agreed that if he was hurting that he needed to be seen at the soonest available time and promised to send good wishes his way tomorrow. What an asset to the greyhound community she is. They just called to confirm the appointment - 8:10 am to meet the doctor followed by whatever procedure he deems necessary. The worry is sinking in to the pit of my stomach. We love the little "tusks" that stick out beyond his squishy nose. It will be sad to see them go. Hopefully this is it for the big guy for a while. Of course it was the last dental that turned up his new cancer. It is like BlackOps to get him into the car these days. Thankfully DH will be there to help. Our acupuncture vet is going to try to come over Friday - I imagine that his back won't be very happy with him after 2 car rides and time on the operating table. Am I rambling? Probably. This was quite the ordeal - The canines were so fused to the mandible that he elected to amputate them at the root rather than remove them entirely. He says the roots were healthy so they will either stay as they are, resorb, rise up to the surface where they can be removed more easily later, or abscess (which is a fairly rare occurrence in his experience).He also removed two lower molars on the left - one in front of and one behind the big chewing molar. There was deep pocketing between them and his hope is that this will eliminate that problem. Dr. Brown did the same thing on the right several years ago and it did the trick.I didn't give him any trazodone or tramadol before we traveled so that it wouldn't interfere with anesthesia but it took him about 6 hours to really wake up. Dr. Taylor said he used half doses of everything because of Kebo's age. Glad he didn't use the full dose. It took two techs plus me to "pour" him into the car. He bled more than expected but not enough to need amicar. I will keep a close eye on him tonight and tomorrow because I am told that a lot of the greyhound bleeding problems can have a delayed presentation. I'm sure my vet can call some in for me if needed. Thank you for all of your well wishes. I will post a picture later - he looks so miserable. If someone posted a picture of me on the internet in that state I would be very upset with them. That he wasn't bleeding at the time of the surgery is not usually an indication to not use amicar - my impression is that it's more of a spontaneous type of bleeding that starts a few days later and that is what amicar prevents (greyhounds and their funny platelets). Not all pharmacies carry amicar so, it could take a day to two to get it - it took me 2 days to get it when Lucy had her "emergency dental" for a cracked tooth. Also, if you are giving any fish oils as supplements, I suggest that you stop them for about 1 week as they act like aspirin and prevent clotting. Thanks - he has been off of fish oil and aspirin for 10 days and will stay off for another 10. There has been very little bloody drainage from his mouth since we got home so I think we are okay from a bleeding perspective. We use amicar all the time at the hospital I work at and he gets most of his prescriptions filled at the hospital pharmacy so I think we should be able to get it in short order if needed. Our holistic vet just emailed and recommended a chinese herb that helps with blood clotting too. Because of his cancer history and because he is off of aspirin I would prefer not to use any hemostatic adjunct If I don't have to. He walked in the house, drank some water and pretty much collapsed on the bed I set out for him. He ate all of his dinner once I put it on his bed with him and he has been outside twice to pee. Just a few minutes ago he got up and was like "what?" and came into the family room to lay down on his favorite bed. It seems that our boy is on his way back. Interestingly, his breathing isn't as loud as it used to be - guess those canines were really squeezing his nose. That is going to be hard to get used to.
