Ok In Crate For 2 Days, Now Wont Go In It. :(

First of all, it's important, that the dog gets used to a fixed schedule of walking and feeding times. A dog's digestion uses to take

more or less 11 hours. So if you feed for example at 8 o'clock in the evening, the dog is ready to 'empty out' at 7h in the morning.

If the dog has no digestive health issues, he can 'hold' it for a while after 7h in the morning. My Greys got their morning walk

and another good walk in the afternoon...no problems with pee or poop, except when they had soft-stool issues.

They could pee in the garden whenever they wanted, but preferred to distribute their pee during the walks.

Normally dogs don't like to soil their territory...if they do so something goes wrong.

Maybe I just had a difficult one then. I created a schedule to let him out at specific intervals (and of course, after meals, naps, and playtime). Lots of positive reinforcement training. At the worst, I was taking him out 10+ times per day. But he didn't like the cold weather and decided that he liked inside better. And he was a sneaky one. He would just sneak away and pee/poop anywhere BUT outside. No warning signals, nothing. It ended up costing $1900 to remove all the carpeting, plus the cost of the dog door and installation. It was one of those things where I had done literally everything by the book, but nothing worked. That's why I'm always amazed/jealous when people say they can let new dogs roam free!

I'm very sorry that you had so bad luck with your Grey...10 times a day hoping for pee or poop, that must be frustrating.

I'm at the end with my advice then...I hope that you get the problem settled.

When housetraining, I gate the dog into the same room with me so I can keep an eye on him; some folks use leash-bonding if necessary. I also figure that if the dog is on his feet and not actively playing, it's time to go outside.

The more you can *prevent* indoor pottying in the beginning -- especially those first several days to a week -- the less likely you are to get anything except true *accidents*. Much easier to be militant, for want of a better word :lol , starting out than to retrain an ingrained behavior. Some dogs are harder and take longer than others tho.

We watched Toley like a hawk the first weekend he was home (2 weeks ago), and by the end of the weekend he got it. No accidents in the house when we are home, none at night. He got that part of the training down immediately. Its just when we leave that we have issues. So this weekend will be the overload of alone training, coming and going at all hours, in and out. Our neighbors will probably think we are nuts!

Well update on yesterday's behavior. The bad first - he did pee, in his belly band, and on a pee pad (again no mess!)

The good parts:

NO poop! Yeah!

Nothing destroyed or chewed.

No pushing when I walked out the door, just watched me.

He was actually SLEEPING in the bedroom when we came home! This part is huge! The fact that he was able to calm himself down, and not running from room to room looking for us the whole time we were gone.

I do know he went on the bed, on the bed in the spare room,. and on the living room chair to look out the window, but this is all stuff I would expect.

Also, again he did not knock over the baby gate to the kitchen, or even try to.

I "think" these are all progress steps.

We are doing the intense in/out alone training this weekend, while we are home, and getting a Thunder Shirt from a friend, so hopefully Monday will be even better.

We are also taking him to the vet on Monday AM to have that tooth looked at. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but it is a big chunk of tooth missing.

Toley Update for Monday. We did some alone training this weekend. This AM we had to go to the vet to have his tooth looked at (referred to a dental specialist).

So we came home and I gave him Rescue Remedy, 6 calming herbal biscuits (they are small), and a Thundershirt that we borrowed from our friends. Well, he was sleeping again when we came home, no baby gate disturbed to kitchen, and best of all NO Poop or Pee! Woo Hoo! Way to go Toley!
