Hi everyone. Sorry I haven't been in this thread much. :blush I have been trying to figure out what I need to do for myself and Havok.

I have spent a lot of time thinking about my little girl Connie. She was also 8 yrs old ,black. and had osteo in the same front right leg. She had her leg amuptated and made it thru surgery. I left to go home to feed my other dogs. I was only gone for 30 minutes when I got a call that she had stopped breathing. :cry1

One minute I know that I'm going to have the amuptation done and then the next I just don't know. :(:cry1 We do not have any 24hr care vets in our small town. The nearest ones are an hour or more away I have an appointment with the vet next week to talk about everything. Some of my issues are that he is only 8 yrs old and could have so much life to live. Then another part of me says he is only 8 yrs old and how much time are we going to get. Another part of me wonders at the amount of pain he will be in after surgery. I also sit and think about the fact that I have 2 girls that are 13 yrs old and have health issues.

I have also been having to think about the money and time after surgery that I would need to take off. We are very busy at work. They just told this week that No vacation request will be granted for the next couple of months.

I wish there was a magic pill I could take that would give me the answers that I want and need.

Thank you to everyone for the good thoughts. I promise to let you know what we are going to do.

I really wish things were simpler for you.

If I weren't in the same boat for vacation I would offer to have him recover here.

Hugs, Cully.

Remember though...Connie broke her leg-her body was already in distress by the time she got to the operating table. A planned surgery would entail presurgical bloodwork, etc to make sure that Mr. Havok would handle surgery before they put him under.

The timing is never great, and he would need to be monitored the night after surgery at least.

Pinky was 8 when she was diagnosed... On August 7th, it will be 9 months since her surgery and she is fine :) She experienced little to no major pain after surgery...a few whimpers here and there.

The palliative options are pretty good nowadays, but, I don't know if they're available where you are. If you want to do pamidronate, you could always have your vet call Dr. Thompson at Kimberly Crest-he did Sutra's pamidronate and did Pinky's IV chemo.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I know that during my decision making process it really helped to read of other experiences with the different options. I also went back and forth, one day I would plan to take our savings and rush Cash down to Ohio State for his amp, the next day I would decide on palliative care for him. It really helped to take emotions out of the equation and just look at the facts. Cash was not a good candidate for the surgery for many reasons. He always had a rough time recovering from simple dental cleanings. I was reminded of this again after his biopsy. My gentle, sweet dog tried to bite me several times afterwards and took about a week to get back to normal. He has had problems with going up and down stairs for several years, even before the cancer and we can't get in or out of the house without climbing a few. My husband made two different ramps for him after the biopsy and he kept jumping over them. Cash refused to let us pick him up or even help him walk. If we tried he would get nervous and fight to get away from us. Of course I would forget all of this from time to time after seeing stories like Tristan's and I would once again try to persuade myself to change my mind. Its so much harder when all of the outcomes eventually lead to the same end and you have to make the decision as to how they get there, without any guarantees in regards to how much time they will have to do it.

Looking back I don't regret the decision I made with Cash. In the beginning I'll admit I made it out of selfishness-I wasn't ready to let him go. We had a wonderful two months to thoroughly enjoy every minute we had with him, two more months to make sure he knew we loved him. I still wasn't ready to let him go when we did and his last few days were the hardest few days of my life, but I could at least justify my decision with physical evidence and know that I was doing what was best for him.

Good luck to you.

it's such a very, very tough decision. What ever the decision is, it is made out of love, and that's what really matters.

I wish I lived closer to help, and didn't have everything going on with Nube :(

sending more hugs to you all.

I guess I wanted to add that I didn't want to influence your decision either way, I hope I didn't come across that way... I just wrote the above comment since it helped me to read about other people's decision making processes. Continuing to think about you and send love and support to you and Havok! :bighug

How far are you from OSU?

They will keep Havoc for several days, so you don't have to worry about taking care of him until he's ready.

They have the Greyhound health and wellness which can help with bills

They also have support groups that will allow you to stay over at someone's house to help keep bills down. And I know it was offered to me, someone might also be willing to help watch over Havoc while you are back at work until you can pick him up.

Contact JoeJoesMom for more details on that last part.

And as far as pain.....2 weeks for the surgical pain to disappear and that's it! I chose amp for a 12 yr old. She had a happy painfree 6 months.

Good luck. I know how hard a decision this is. I doubted myself for a long time until I saw how happy and re-adjusted she was. I have no doubts now.

Sorry, I haven't sent out an update for a while. After talking to the vet. We have choosen not to do the amputation. :( It has been the HARDEST choice to make. I have gone back and forth about this. One minute I know that I'm going to have the surgery done and the next I just don't know. I have had such bad experiences with my hounds having osteo and having surgery. I have lost both of them. Van only made it 4 days after and Connie didn't even make it 8 hrs. I know that they both had different problems but, I still can't help but think about this.

We are going to keep him as comfy as possible for as long as possible.

I will keep you posted on what is going on.

Thanks for the on going prayers,
