Have You Ever Seen Pads Like This Before?

Recommended Posts

This is my foster with the +VF titer. His pads were alllll cut up and open sores when we first got him. Kept monitoring, keeping them clean, watching as things improved... but now I think we're at the end of the 'improvement' stage and they still are just not right. The spots don't seem formed like the corns I've dealt with, but the pads are hard and calloused like a corny pad would be. But it's on almost every single pad, and some are still quite open and sore-looking.

Three different feet:

No doubt this causes some of his limping, but watching him move, you can tell he has pain coming from other areas too, like his hips, etc.

Any ideas on what I should do?

owee!!

i would slather BagBalm all over his toes, then put baby socks on, and booties over that.

poor guy --- that looks painful.

if they don't heal up, i'd be into the vet to have them looked at.

good luck!

I've seen some corns that looked that bad. Poor pup! I'd do as suggested, cover with bag balm and socks or protective boots and see if they improve.

Would that be ok to do with the ones that are open sores? I hesitated putting anything on them other than some neosporin for fear of irritating it more.

I know, the poor guy. He has such a sweet personality, even though I know he must be hurting!

yes, i've put bag balm on open pads before.

it's greasy stuff, so keep the feet covered with booties.

i would think in a week you should see improvement.

Coconut oil .. coming in really late and inserting comment without having read whole thread, but the Coconut Oil should do no harm and has antibiotic as well as healing properties without clogging things up. Not to be a naysayer on the Bag Balm, I know lots of people use it.. but my holistic vet doesn't like it -- they use other things like Buck Mtn. Wound Balm, which has plantain in it...

Now I'll go read the rest of the thread and find I've posted a complete non sequitor but that's ok, Coconut oil is quite miraculous sometimes. (that being said, Bag Balm is probably just fine... I haven't been using it, but if it's not licked -- )

Oh my. I have a question - it looks a bit like fungus - is it hard?

For some reason I'm thinking the houndie has been standing in his own "stuff" for a while.....just wondering how clean his space was while living there.

Has the hound been checked for hyperkeratosis? Although rare in greys, we did have a foster with this condition and his pads looked very much like this. In addition, if they were left untreated they would split open, causing open sores similar to what I see here.

Has the neosporin ever made his feet better?

I only ask because some people--and presumably some dogs--are allergic to neosporin, so that treatment with it only makes things worse. If there's any doubt, try polysporin instead. (My mother, sister, and I all are allergic to neosporin.)

IMO, soak them in warm water with some salts and then put on Bag balm and if the dog will not lie down for about 30 minutes, cover with baby socks otherwise, you can leave uncovered.

If you don't see improvement in 1 week, you might need to check for a fungal/bacterial condition.

Somehow I knew they would look just like Mizzy's looked. She did not have VF. She had them biopsied and I'll have to look for the report. Basically, nothing but overgrowth of the pad.

Lousy pictures, but I think you can get the idea.

I will say that Mizzy's were not sore unless I took off a lot of the overgrowth. To properly diagnosis you need a biopsy of the pad. I wouldn't do it until he's better from the VF

Yes, hard - if I try, I could probably flake off the overgrowth stuff (but I don't). Doesn't seem "deep" like a corn. He was in a clean kennel before I got him - but since Feb he's been at my house and the house is clean (it is, I swear! :lol)

Interesting, no hadn't looked into that.

I only used it the first week when his pads were bloody and a mess. Haven't used it since, though.

Mizzy's feet look similar, Diane - just minus the sores. I haven't messed with his feet at all, except to keep them clean, so the overgrowth or whatever it is seems to crack open on its own...

Until you figure it out, bag balm will be safe. If he will allow a sock on it'll help :)

Thanks! We do have bag balm, so I will give it a shot tonight. He's good about everything, so I'm sure he won't mind the socks. :P

I'll vouch your house is clean. :P

Thanks. :lol

Diane - did you do anything with her pads as a treatment? And who would recommend seeing for a specialist, if anyone?

I was going to say either a fungus or a virus. There are so many case of (fill-in-the-blank) that Manuka honey can help, I wonder if it could be effective on these poor feet? Remember the baby socks :colgate

Ditto on trying the Bag Balm and socks. I would apply it to his pads twice a day, if possible.

I hope it helps the poor guy.

Let us know, ok?

When it's time, you can do a biopsy of the pad. I would not do it until he licks the VF unless the vet feels it's safe. I love my vet dearly, but I don't know what he was thinking that day as he biopsied a front & rear pad, on the same side. Have you ever seen a dog run on two legs, on the same side?:eek I don't know how she figured that one out :lol

Bag balm & socks. ;)

As far as I know there are three very distinctive types of hyperkeratosis. The foster we had was diagnosed with Familial Footpad Hyperkeratosis. There is not cure but the condition is treated with daily foot soaks and frequent filing with a dremel ot the crusty overgrowth on the pads. He is doing well, and with regular treatment, has very few open fissures anymore. When these do occur they are prone to infection so a topical antibiotic cream or oral antibiotics may be needed.

We did the socks and bag balm last night and he licked all his socks. I muzzled him with a muzzle with a poop guard and he just continued to lick the inside of it trying to get to the socks.

I took the socks off, wiped his paws and now he's still licking at his feet. Bag balm must taste real good.
