RileysLegacy
My poor boy really hasn't been feeling well. Thurs night he started having to go out every hour or so with diarrhea, then vomited about 3 days worth of undigested kibble. He was throwing up and having diarrhea all night, but then slept most of Friday. By Friday night he was pooping rivers of blood Yesterday the vet wanted to keep him overnight but I opted for sub-q fluids and to watch him at home. This wasn't my regular vet and I didn't like him too much. When we got home Legs pooped blood a couple more times, but slept through most of last night. I just gave him his medicine and his first meal since Thurs (a little white rice and scrambled egg). Fingers crossed that it stays down!! He's always had a sensitive stomach, but this time I can tell he feels awful. He is also down to 60 lbs from 66, but I am hoping he will gain it back quickly once he is able to eat again. He's always so well behaved at the vet, but the techs couldn't believe he just lay down on his little bed and let them draw blood and stuff. He really wasn't feeling well

RileysLegacy
Thanks everyone!! I am excited to report that so far his breakfast has stayed down And, even better, he just picked up a toy for the first time in 3 days! He always carries his toys around, and I hadn't even realized until just now that it had been so long. So he is definitely feeling better!!! ShantisMom
Dang!!!! Glad he kept some food down. He tested negative for valley fever right? Shanti had a lot of stomach issues for a long time! We tried a ton of stuff, including prescription food. Her tummy settled down on kirklands lamb food from Costco. Go figure! Give our cousin a kiss for us. Guess weird illness is a family trait. RileysLegacy
Just wondering if anyone knows.... Legs seems to be feeling fine, but still has diarrhea, though no urgency to go out any more than normal. Tomorrow is his last day of Flagyl and he's back on his normal diet. Should I be concerned or does this sound normal as his stomach/intestines/whatever heal?
MerlinsMum
Lucy, if I were you I would talk to your vet ASAP about getting some more Flagyl. I'm going through the same issue with Merlin (bloody diarrhea and a diagnosis of HGE) and he was on Flagyl for only 8 days. Just three days after taking the last pill he had a relapse. He is now on Flagyl for 4 full weeks. Every dog is different, but if Legs is still having diarrhea it sounds as though he shouldn't be off the antibiotics just yet. Either that, or the antibiotics are not treating the cause of his sickness. Poor boy I hope he feels better soon. Quote Kerry with Lupin in beautiful coastal Maine. He seems to be feeling normal, but his poop is not good. No blood though, so I don't know how worried I should be. I think I will try to get more Flagyl from my regular vet (who did not treat him, so I don't know if she'll just give it to me) on Monday. Did Merlin lose weight? greyhead
No advice, just lots of good wishes for you and Legs! (Spencer has been on Flagyl for 2.5 years, sometimes at a higher dose, sometimes a lower one, but it's for IBD so not the same as HGE. But maybe, now that I think of it, you and your vet could plan to give more Flagyl for x days and then taper off on a lower dose for a little longer, just to ease him on his way?) LuvAPuppy
has he had cultures for giardia or clostridium? he could have a bacterial infection. 5 days of Flagyl doesn't seem like very long, most (human) infections require 7-10 days of antibiotics. He might need to be rechecked if he hasn't been already by the time you read this... My apologies for only replying now, I've not been able to check GT properly for a couple of days. Yes, as of a week ago he had lost nearly 3lbs, but I can tell he's lost a little more since then. It could also be the food he's on, though. The latest is that he's gone off the I/D - doesn't want it anymore. No stomach gurgles, and seems very interested in Sagan's food and cookies, so I think he just doesn't like it anymore. But his diarrhea has returned even though he is STILL on the antibiotics. So I'm not sure what to suggest regarding Legs - clearly I have so few answers myself - but I do think that talking to his vet, even though he didn't treat him for his current issue, would be the best option. I have found some vets to be on the stingy side with Flagyl - luckily my vet and even the specialist I saw a week ago are not reluctant to have me keep extra at home just in case - but in any event if Legs is still having diarrhea, something is off and I'm sure your vet is going to want to get to the bottom of it. Poor boy. Keep us posted! :goodluck Quote Kerry with Lupin in beautiful coastal Maine.
