greytspud
My sister's 15 year old mix has been diagnosed with kidney failure. The vet recommended Hills Science Diet low residue/kideney formula. My sister is not happy with Science Diet. Any other makers of low residue diets that are better than SD?
Guest greytbookert
When our Mama had to go on a prepared kidney diet, she did much better with the Purina N/F. It seems to be a bit more pleasing in taste. There are also home cooked meals for kidney diets but they take a bit of time to figure out all the ins and outs. I did supplement Mama's N/F with a homemade diet, just to offer some variety. Wishing your sister the best of luck!

Guest BassoonMo
When our lab developed kidney problems, they put him on Prescription Diet K/D. It was really expensive though ($80/large bag) and our dog didn't really seem to like the taste of it. He did eventually start eating it though, but never seemed too happy about it. GeorgeofNE
My dog ate Purina N/F called, and Hill's kibble. He did just great. Nice coat, bright eyes, no problems at all with the food. I personally wouldn't get too concerned about the ingredients of a prescription diet--particularly if my dog was already 15. If that's why she's hesitant to use Hill's. Batmom
Will pup not eat the K/D? Hills also publishes a sheet of homemade therapeutic diets, which you can get from your vet. Batmom
I wouldn't recommend the dogaware site. It's quite biased toward current feeding fads for *healthy* dogs and quotes a lot of studies out of context. Rickiesmom
I have been feeding Jaynie the Royal Canin low protein kibble and she likes it just fine and has done well on it (she is not in chronic renal failure but did not recover full kidney function following acute kidney failure about a year and a half ago - the internal med specialist who treated her suggested this diet). My clinic is currently recommending the Purina over the Royal Canin, so I will discuss a possible change with Jaynie's internal med specialist the next time we see him for a checkup. gracegirl
Fenway is 4.5 years old and a recent ultrasound revealed kidney damage. My vet suggested I look into all of the script foods, didn't recommend one over any other. He also suggested, if I chose to go the home cooked route, to consult the team at UC Davis (but there is a fee for their home cooked diet recommendations). I also asked a vet friend of mine who practives emergency medicine in California and she suggeted Purina NF because it's more pallatable that other kidney formulas. I've joined the yahoo kidney and kidney diet groups. I have not changed Fenway's diet yet as the only number out of range in blood work or urinalysis was the specific gravity. I'm going to see a specialist next month and will decide from there what to do. Good luck to her and her pup! rascalsmom
Not a greyhound, or even a dog, but my cat has been on 'kidney' food for years. We started her off on the prescription stuff (Purina n/f) and she liked it. It is, however, very expensive. I found a suitable substitute at a locally owned pet store--it's called Neo [made by Hi-Tor], and comes in cat formulas, or dog formulas, both dry and canned. I showed the label to her vet, and the vet said it seems just fine, comparable to Science Diet or Purina rx food. Hi-Tor pet food link. You can locate a store from here. For my cat, it works out to be around $25 per case (she eats canned), versus the $40+ for the rx food at the vet's. Edited March 30, 2011 by rascalsmom Quote Phoebe (Belle's Sweetpea) adopted 9/2/13. Guest mcsheltie
I don't know how far along your sister's dog is, but a good starter diet for kidney disease is (believe it or not!) Innova Senior (not Senior Plus). Unless P&G has mucked it up since they bought the company The phos & sodium content is low and protein sources are (were?) of good quality. I have used it multiple times with dogs just diagnosed or whose numbers were high from urinary problems and it has helped bring the numbers down.
