Guest zombrie
Sorry for the lack of an update, things have been hectic. I am still waiting for answers as well - so there really isn't anything to update. He hasn't gotten any better or any worse Meanwhile, my GSD has Lyme again, for the 6th time while on frontline. When will the craziness end?! Thank you all for all the support and good thoughts
Rickiesmom
My goodness, you certainly have your hands full! Is Doolin back home with you did he need to be admitted? Sending continued prayers - please update us with results when you have them. Will also keep Kodie in my thoughts - I grew up with GSDs and love them. Sending continued prayers - please update us with results when you have them. Will also keep Kodie in my thoughts - I grew up with GSDs and love them. He is at home. We just need to make sure he stays hydrated. He isn't sick enough that he needs to stay at the vet. He still eats and drinks on his own when his stomach isn't so bad, and he still wants to go for walks and things like that. I am currently trying to contact a specialist but I go straight to voice mail every time.

Guest zombrie
Well we found a cause for Doolin's issues... Hookworms. I am so relieved. We can treat him and be done with it I'm just at our vet. He had hookworms when we brought him home in November and we treated it, I didn't know they could come back Edited March 31, 2011 by zombrie

greymatters
Well we found a cause for Doolin's issues... Hookworms. I am so relieved. We can treat him and be done with it I'm just at our vet. He had hookworms when we brought him home in November and we treated it, I didn't know they could come back I'm so glad to hear that you've found the cause of your boy's misery and that it's treatable! (Though I'm surprised that your vet didn't check this first, especially since Doolin had hookworms before .) Hooks are nasty little buggers, and unfortunately are tough to get rid of completely. Our boy also had them shortly after coming home and went through multiple rounds of treatment. The life cycle is many weeks long, and the larvae can "encyst" in muscle or other tissue and hang out there, in a dormant state, for quite a while. Eventually they "wake up" and migrate to the gut, where they wreak their havoc. De-worming meds only kill the worms that are present in the GI tract at the time of treatment, so multiple rounds of panacur (or whatever you're using) are usually a good idea. Some people (we are in this group now) end up giving a round of de-wormer every few months to prevent recurrence. In any case, your Doolin should be feeling better pretty quickly once those nasties are killed off - best of luck to you both! Rickiesmom
Like everyone I am so relieved the issue is simple and treatable. I am amazed your regular vet didn't figure this out. Feel better soon Doolin! Now that she knows what the problem is, your mamma is going to be all over it. And just think, you should be able to have all kinds of goodies to eat again soon too! He "KNEW" it was IBD and didn't do a single test and wanted to do a biopsy. It took a trip to a specialist (who is GREAT by the way) and $800 to find out he had worms all along. Thanks for the info, I hope we can get rid of those useless creatures soon so my baby boy can feel better!

In any case, your Doolin should be feeling better pretty quickly once those nasties are killed off - best of luck to you both! Greygeek speaks the truth. We consider our Spencer to have a permanent case of hooks because two vets missed it before a third caught it, by which time he was overloaded with them. We give a monthly dose of Interceptor, which is necessary but not sufficient, so we also give Drontal two or three times a year. Hooks don't just stay in the gut. They can migrate to any tissue in the body, and they are especially likely to move to the lungs, where they're coughed up and swallowed back to the gut. (Easy to mistake for a backward sneeze.) And there is that cyst business that keeps them protected. I'm afraid I have to say that it's likely Doolin will be more susceptible to intestinal infection because of the hookworm damage. They dig channels. And he's probably more likely to develop IBD, as well. Both Stripeyfan and I have been through this exact trajectory of developments, and I'm sure there are others too. So not to discourage you, but you should change to a vet that is more competent than your current one, and you should always keep an eye out for any kind of GI distress. That said, I'm very happy for you and Doolin that you've found out about this and can treat it! Hope he feels better super fast!
