Dylans Thryoid Test In From Msu

Recommended Posts

Well, I just recieved results on Dylan's thyroid test from Michigan State. My Vet is waiting to talk to one of the endocrinologist's at the University.

T4 11 low

Free T4 by dialysis 1.9 normal

Free T3 4.1 low

TSH 34 Normal, but on the higher side

I think my vet is stumped, that is why he is waiting to talk to the endocrinologist. Just wondering what your opinions are?? He does have symptoms of hypothyroidism....

Thanks for any advise you can give..Sandy

Curfew's Free T4 that came back today. *See below.

Both my vet here, and my former vet/employer in Florida, want Curfew on Soloxine 0.7 mg twice a day, with these results. I have also email the results to OSU, as I always want their opinion, especially with Curfew's history.

THYROID PANEL #6 :FREE T4 (EQUIL. DIALYSIS)

Test Result Reference Range Low Normal High

FREE T4-ed (ng/dL) 0.5, (0.7 - 3.7 ng/dL) LOW

FREE T4-ed (pmol/L) 1 6.4, (9.0 - 47.4 pmol) LOW

Hope this helps! Dee

I had a panel done there a few years ago and for a small additional fee they would give you an interpretation of the results. Hope that helps

To my knowledge, I have never been charged extra for an interpretation of their results. When sending blood to MSU, all you have to do is write a note on the form asking for a written evaluation from an edrocrinologist. I can never remember their norms.....it's so much easier to read their note explaining that because this is a greyhound, the standards they use are lower than for other breeds.

They are also available to your vet for anything that needs clarification.

I much prefer their advice than having my vet "guess".

His symptoms include a small stroke 7 weeks ago. Fully recovered. Very crabby lately towards Daisy and he's never really been before. Slightly lethargic but hard to tell on an 8 year old greyhound. He's gained almost 7 lbs lately without changing his feeding habits.

With an fT4 like that, he sure isn't hypothyroid at this time. Might be worth retesting in a month or two. Here is MSU's FAQ page, in case you don't have it: http://www.animalhealth.msu.edu/Sections/E...d_Canine.php#01

Has he been on any meds lately?

You might want to consider also sending the results to Dr. Jean Dodds. She's great about getting back to email inquiries quickly and giving her interpretation as well. Her email address is: hemopet at hotmail dot com

Hope you get an answer fast. Something's going on there, IMHO.

Do they think the stroke is related to hypothyroidism? Could you tell us more about that?

Totally agree with the above. I sent the results to Dr. Dodds and she emailed me back right away on one of my dogs.

The last fee schedule I had there was a minimal charge of five dollars for the intreptation otherwise just the results are given. In my opinion it is best to have a specialist do the intrepation based on breed, symptoms and thyriod results.

I think we paid something like $5 for Arlie's results interpretation at MSU - negligible cost vs. the value of the opinion. I'd get my vet to request it immediately. We did this in a 2-step process too as I didn't initially know the request needed to be explicit, and we got an answer in a day or two.

Editing to add the thread from Arlie's thyroid testing - we had tests run at both Dr. Dodds lab and at MSU, with different results. As we had no clinical signs and MSU didn't think she was hypothyroid, we chose not to treat, and she's fine. Here is the link:
