She just stopped eating, and the merry-go-round of vets and specialists still hasn’t been able to tell us what caused it. Tyler was 5.5 (a non-osteo bone tumor). Blitz just turned 12, and is doing pretty well, other than he thinks he's weaker in his backend than he actually is. I usually tell people about 12 years. My youngest was 6 (Gogh) who died recently of cancer. My group's director Vicki, her grey was 15 when he died last year. Yet I've seen them at 18 months die also. And try not to dwell on things that "might" happen; worrying too much robs your life of joy. Thanks for writing this, it is so true! I try to live by that thought process, not only because you never know what is in store for the future but it is also, in part, why I have a tendency to adopt seniors. Our first greyhound, Booker, was 10 when we adopted him, Mama was 12, and our newest, Annie was 11 when she came to us. For me, it is not about how long they are with us but the love we can show them while they are with us and I like to think that they are grateful for that. Of course there are other cancers that can turn up, too... He passed peacefully in his backyard with his beloved daddy holding him. However, we have a pack of mostly seniors now... Echo will be 11 in a week and a half. Atlas and Orion will be 10 in July. Uber is 7. They are all healthy, and happy. That is my goal for my guys who are both 5 (well, Vinny will be next month) Though her age was only a guess, not a fact since no one really knew who she was or read her tattoo... I think there was a greyhound somewhere in NJ (Atlantic City area?) named Suzy who was 20 or so. Dusty turned 12 in January and raced until almost 5 I think. My family thinks I'm nuts when I constantly remind my angels of their promise. Now I have Brighid, and according to the books her life expectancy is around 9. So she had to make the promise too. I was in such shock at the loss I wasn't thinking clearly enough to request a necropsy so I never knew for sure what happened but from what I described a friend who's a vet felt it was an aortic rupture. I lost the second one at 11 years 4 months to hemangiosarcoma. The third one had laryngeal paralysis and a host of unidentified autoimmune issues that caused his health and quality of life to deteriorate rapidly. I helped him to the Bridge a month shy of his 13th birthday. There was Suzie Waddell who was 20 when she passed. She was 15 when the Waddell's adopted her. I heard about Suzie when I adopted my Susie who was almost 14 when I adopted her. Susie lived to 15 years 1 1/2 months. On the other hand I lost Ladybug at 3 years 2 months from cancer. You never know so enjoy them while you have them. GreytNut Posted April 25, 2009 Share Posted April 25, 2009 I was told when I first adopted that the average was 14, but I think 11 or 12 is probably a more realistic average. Some live considerably less--my Argus only made it to 7 before bone cancer got him--and some live considerably longer. The oldest greyhound that I'm aware of made it to 17. If cancer doesn't get them, they do have longer life spans than most large breed dogs. HopeForHounds Posted April 25, 2009 Share Posted April 25, 2009 Foxy was 13 y 8 m when she died, she raced until she was 4 1/2. Jake is 10 and looks, and acts like a 4 year old. No if he's just stop hurting himself. Jet is 7 and he is the one I truly worry about. He's wound tighter than a screw and has horrible teeth. Dental in a few weeks should fix that, but I sure wish he'd relax more. Peanut is 4 and seems to be really healthy. Still everyday is a gift. Died of osteosarcoma (adopted at age 2.5) Giggles- 11 yrs old - raced- died of osteosarcoma (adopted at age 10) Linus- 3 months shy of 15 yrs old raced (but only a few-wouldn't come out of the box!)- died of osteosarcoma (adopted at age 9) When I adopted Linus and Giggles (came together) I was asked "why do you want those old dogs?". We only got one year with Gigs, but had 6 wonderful years with Linus. Casey was a little over 2 yrs old and we lost him after 4 years. I get so happy to see the birthdays of the teen dogs on here! I didn't adopt my girl until she was six, she's my first greyhound and I hope for a long and happy life for her. I have researched online but I would like to know people's experiences..how old did your oldest one live? My Abby had no health problems until just shy of her 13th birthday.
