So... Off To The Vet? Or Am I Paranoid?

Recommended Posts

When we first got Rainy we thought she had kennel cough, the vet couldn't hear anything, but gave us drugs just in case it was a mild case. After the drugs she stopped the quacky coughing for a bit. Only doing it occasionally and only a cough or two at a time. We chalked it up to maybe a tickle in her throat or some type of hairball!

Since this past Saturday she's been doing it lots more often. I actually was able to get a video of it after her bath (whole other story about goose poop) Someone else saw the video and thought it was reverse sneezing. Info about that here http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2335 I've never heard of it before.

Exercise does not trigger it

Eating does not trigger it

She has a normal appetite

She's normally cheerful and bright, plays with her toys, etc.

Here are the videos I have. This is one of the bad episodes

What does it look like? Has anyone ever heard of this? Any other dogs do this? Could it be allergies? Should I have her scoped? x-ray of lungs? I never have a whole lot of faith in drs so I like to go to them informed about things that might need to be done.

Help please! Rainy apparently thinks we should spend our tax return on her!

Patrick has done this since we got him (6.5 years ago)--our vet says its not uncommon in dogs with a thyroid disorder (he's treated.) Not 100% sure if she's right, but he's never had any respiratory problems at all.

Given your overall description I personally wouldn't be too worried--maybe something to bring up at the next checkup but not to rush in for.

I'm interested in seeing what other people have to say though.

Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). Godspeed Patrick (28 April 1999 - 5 August 2012), Murphy (23 June 2004 - 27 July 2013), Leo (1 May 2009 - 27 January 2020), and Henry (10 August 2010 - 7 August 2020), you were loved more than you can know.

George does that sometimes after meals.

I'm sure you could talk your vet into charging you a lot of money on tests, but since she has no other apparently problem--do you really want to?

I've always thought it was sort of like when you eat popcorn and you get a hull stuck on that thing that dangles in your throat...annoying little tickle, but I certainly wouldn't take myself to the doctor for that--and like your dog, George is clearly in the pink of health, so I don't worry about it!

But hey, that's me!

Hm! Happy does a similar cough, but not quite the same thing. Vet wasn't worried when I couldn't get her to do it in the office.

What was the drug she took before? Maybe it was something with a side-effect of reducing the coughing?

No advice here. Hopefully it's just a tickle!

That sure sounds a lot like my Gracie doing the reverse sneeze. Don't know why it happens. I just rub her throat to calm her down.

Looks/sounds like a reverse sneeze to me too. Kebo does this. Every once in a while he can really get going. He eats/sleeps/poops/plays fine so we have never worried about it.

That said, only you know your dog. If you feel something is wrong, you will never regret trusting your gut instinct and having it checked out.

Sounds like reverse sneezing to me. My dogs all do it and it's nothing major. Stroking the throat helps. The link will explain more about it. [/url].[/b]

Sounds like a reverse sneeze to me, too. It's a little more squeaky than the reverse sneezing mine have done, but that would be my guess.

What I would do is take that vid with you next time you go to the vet for something and let them have a listen. Personally, if she's not showing any other symptoms and it passes within a minute or two with no more than the very mild distress that she's showing there, I wouldn't rush her in. :)

Try a harness on her, I had reverse sneezing and duck like noises from my whippet (RIP)

It turned out that she had some trauma to her trachea from the greys playing too rough with her in the yard. BTW she did not die from this problem, I lost her to a rare blood disorder similar to Heather's Harmony

I love everyone here! :inlove I just called and canceled the rash vet appointment that I made an hour ago. In my defense I've only had her for 4 months and don't know what normal is yet.

It was some antibiotic that she was on for a week of so. But that was 4 months ago.... I don't even have the bottle to see what it was

Those videos helped calm me down. That is exactly what she's doing. Thank you for posting that.

She's not a fan of walking on a harness... It seems to confuse her  She never does it while walking or with her collar on (tag collar is so loose and thin it doesn't count) She will occasionally do it in the car and mostly in the apartment. I suppose we could try getting her used to the harness...

Yup. That's reverse sneezing. Dude does this a LOT! Picture what Rainey does over and over and over - wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez - he'll do this for several minutes. Sometimes he can't even get his breath.

Someone suggested trying 2 drops of Rescue Remedy when he starts having an "attack" and that has really worked wonders.

Really? Do you just put it on his tongue? We have the spray not the drops but I suppose it would work the same.

Wow, you really do learn something new every day! My whole life I've always had at least one dog that does that. Never knew what it was - and it never lasted very long or was distressful to the dog. I just thought they were clearing their sinuses or something! :huh Now I know what to call it!

Thanks Rainy for helping some of us get more enlightened! :):)

Josey does it at least a few times a week. The first time I saw her reverse sneezing, I flipped out. I had only had her for a few days, and I thought she was having a heart attack or seizing...

My adoption coordinator had to talk me down!

Thanks! :colgate She's the perfect dog for us! We are completely smitten. Although the kitties right now are getting even.... Rainy tried to eat them at first. Even took a chunk of fur out of one of them. Recently the cats have been ganging up on Rainy and running her away from her food! :lol I have to stand guard with a squirt bottle.

Hi;

It sounds like reverse sneezing. My IGs do it, and it sounds like an asthma attack. One vet suggested I cup their muzzle in my hand and blow into their nostrils. This seems to help cut the episode.

Timber does this all the time. In the house, on the walk, during eating. I'm glad someone posted a video of it because I'd never had a dog who did this before and it's so bizarre.

Sounds like it's pretty common w/ the greys...

My male 7 year old has been having a 'clearing the throat' slight cough for 3 months now. (I know what a reverse sneeze sounds like and that is not the case with mine) At first the vet diagnosed kennel cough. We planned to let it run its course. When it didn't get any better, we got antibiotics. That did not seem to work so we had x-rays taken. The x-rays showed a small mass in the chest. We had an ultra sound and a biopsy done. They came back negative for cancer. Next we did a test for 'fungus'. Today the results for fungus were negative. He hasn't gotten any worse in the 3 months. He eats, and poops the same as always. He has weighed 65.9 for 6 months. He runs and walks with no after problems. If he doesn't get better in 6 weeks, we are going to have another set of chest x-rays taken. To me, if was cancer, his slight cough should have been getting worse in the 3 months. I am not trying to steal your topic but I know what you are going though. It is worrisome.

Yup! Just a squirt of the spray. But I think you could do it again in a few minutes if she hasn't stopped after one spray.
