Guest LovesDoggies
My boy Butch had a slight limp, went to the vet, took antibiotics for a slight paw abrasion. The limp got worse. My vet took x-rays today. I can't even piece together everything that she told me because I was so upset. I would not entertain the idea of bone cancer. Would not. But, now I have to. She said that where his front leg meets his shoulder, there is slight thinning of the bone, and there's also a small bone fragment there (but she had no idea what caused that) and that she took a chest x-ray and that it does not look normal. A radiologist will be at her office tomorrow, so they will look at the xrays together and I will have a diagnosis. Butch will be 7 in March. He is my healthy boy. My other boy, Bruce, has GME. I've spent the past year going to different specialists with Bruce, taking him for blood work every two weeks, giving him injections at home, and he is not going to beat the disease either. The neurologist reached this conclusion definitively last week. So, you see, this was not supposed to happen to Butch. I am not ready to handle this now. Butch is my healthy boy. What am I going to do?
gracegirl
I'm so sorry. I've never walked that road before but I hope you get some answers and clarity tomorrow. Guest LovesDoggies
Thank you. Has anyone ever posted on here like this before, and then it turned out not to be bone cancer? Could it still be something else? I remember now that the vet also said there was significant bruising in the same area of the leg. Could it be something else? Guest DebR
I am so, so sorry that you have to face two pups with health problems. I wish there was something I could "do", it makes me feel so helpless to hear about sick hounds, and the parents that love them so much having to bear horrible news. Hold them close and love them, then do it all over again. Try to focus on the good not the bad. Lean on friends when you feel you can't handle things. Cry when you need to, scream when you have to. If there is anything I can do, please ask. I will keep you and both your boys in my prayers. You have a strong support system here, please please please use us when you need to. My dreamy sweet boy. Butch was a very successful racer at Raynham. He's been with me for just two years. I never thought this would happen. 3DogNite
My boy Rascal was diagnosed with Osteo, a couple years ago. It was a Miss-diagnosis! he did NOT have cancer. he had calcium deposits that were growing around an area that had pins taken out after surgery. The x-rays did look very bad so I didn't do a biopsy, and went right into pain management mode. When he was getting better, and it was obvious to me that it had to be something other than cancer, we went to a another specialist, who said it absolutely wasn't cancer,,,, then i had to figure out how to bring my boy down from a pain-med addiction! That was the happiest day of my life. I will keep you and Butch in my thoughts thru the next couple of days. I can only hope that your boy will be as lucky! Stay strong and positive. queenwinniesmom
Butch is absolutely stunning! I think this time period is the hardest---you aren't sure what the diagnosis is, so you're hoping for the best, yet expecting the worst. And even with a diagnosis, you're torn between treatment options. That is when the people here will be a huge support system, so please keep us up to date with everything that is going on with Butch. And yes, there have been some mis-diagnosis(es) (Is the plural a word?) Wasn't Robin's Loca mis-diagnosed? Assuming the worst, that is is osteo, so many things would have to be considered. The location of the tumor, whether the lungs have mets, etc. I think the diagnosis has to be pursued further, and possibly more consultations. If someone hasn't already mentioned it, your vet could have Dr. Couto at Ohio State take a look at the X-rays. They are the best. In the meantime, you will both be in our prayers. Guest jurishound
I highly recommend asking Dr. Couto for his opinion - ask your vet to put the radiographs on a disk and overnight them to OSU. He is wonderfully kind.

It is funny that you said he is stunning, because that's what I named that first photograph when I took it and saved it on my computer -- ButchIsStunning.jpg. I will talk to my vet about sending the films to Dr. Couto. I highly recommend asking Dr. Couto for his opinion - ask your vet to put the radiographs on a disk and overnight them to OSU. He is wonderfully kind. Thank you for the suggestion. I will see if they have capability to save the radiograph to a disk. I suspect they don't, but I will ask. She mentioned possibly sending the films to NJ to be read, but my impression was that the films themselves would be going in evelopes. In any event, after we hear from the radiologist tomorrow, I will be sure to be in touch with Dr. Couto.
