Boxer Run-in

While I was out of town this past weekend my little red fawn Bommer was attacked by a Boxer in a dog park. He's going to be ok as long as none of the bites become infected. He still has air pockets in his left thigh area from where the tissue was torn but his spirits are good.

I wasn't sure what section of the forum this topic should go in but I was wondering if anyone else has had consistent problems with Boxers not liking their greys. It doesn't happen with all of them but aside from a pit bull it is the only other type of dog that has had issues with Bommer. It happens upon first meeting him and the owners always say that their dogs have never behaved this way before.

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

We haven't had any bad experiences with Boxers, but we don't go to dog parks anymore because of so many situations like yours. So sorry to hear about Bommer. I hope things heal up quickly. :goodluck Keep us updated on how he's doing.

I have never had a good experience with Boxers that I have encountered on walks or at dog parks. Not sure if it is the breed or just that I happen to meet ppl with obnoxious dogs that happen to be boxers

We've never run across a boxer when we were with our pups, but I use to work for a couple who brought their boxer to work...He was an escape artist and so they brought him in, but he would threaten anyone who came near the door...I see they now have a sign that says 'beware of dog' and has a boxer picture on it...but then again, they weren't the best at training him, he is an intact male who is 10 y/o and gets away with EVERYTHING!! The male boss finally gave me a pop can with pennies in it to throw towards him when he acted up...he started to behave when I was there as I meant business...my coworker didn't like how the dog didn't behave either...one day, the dog lunged at someone when the owners weren't there and he drug the dog to female boss' office and locked him in there...it was about the only thing you could do as she only made him 'sit' to get his leash on/off, and for walks (I took him outside to go potty once, they usually left him off leash...he almost got hit once out back doing that and he would charge people outside), you had to yank hard on the leash and yell 'heel', then according to female boss, he would obey...

As a breed, I don't think they're bad dogs, but you do have to train them and show them that you're alpha, otherwise they will commit murder, and unfortunately a lot of stupid people get dogs and don't train them...

I have never had any run ins with a boxer. But my aunt had one and if you tried to go near her the dog would attack or try to bite. She had to keep him up. Sorry about Bommer, I hope he feels better real soon. :getwell

There are three boxers who are regulars at the dog park we go to, and we have not had any problems. A greyhound was recently attacked there by a Malamute (unprovoked). It did a lot of damage to his side. They couldn't stitch the wounds closed, and he subsequently got an infection. Thankfully, he is recovering now but it has been very slow. There is also a Malamute (with owner) who walks past us sometimes on a running trail. He always growls and tries to lunge at us, so I am pretty wary of that breed.

I had a run in with a boxer with my first greyhound...however, it sounds to me like maybe you just need to avoid the dog park, if that is where this keeps happening.

Personally my feeling is dogparks and greyhounds= disaster.

I know there are many who disagree and for them I am glad it's currently working for them.

I'm so sorry your poor baby had to go through this.

Hugs to you both.

My greys are muzzled at the dog parks. We've not had any problems. In fact, my female grey has become in love with a male boxer. She keeps following him. And whines when he leaves the park. Unrequited love!

My greys LOVE the dog park!

I would be very, very nervous about having my dogs muzzled at a dog park unless every other dog there is muzzled. you are leaving your dogs with absolutely no defense if they are attacked.

greytelectric - you are making a big mistake in muzzling your dogs where other dogs are not muzzled - I hope you will re-consider this action it could be a disaster for your dogs.

My two greys live with two non-greys. One is a boxer mix, the other a pit bull mix. Please don't blame breeds in blanket statements.

We had a run in with a boxer with our first greyhound. He came running toward Hawk and my dh and dh caught his collar and also had Hawks collar. dH was in the middle going around and around in a circle with the boxer trying to get our dog. Someone finally came out of the house to help. I would have never been stroung enough to hold those dogs back.

I don't recall Boxers specifically being mentioned, but the subject has been brought up here as to whether Greyhounds in particular might be targets of canine aggression. Something about their shape, the way they move, their posture...? This came up after a period where it seemed like every day there was a new post about a Greyhound being attacked while just being leash-walked around the neighborhood. It sure felt more than just random for a while there!

I don't really have a comment about boxers in general excerpt they are very active and slightly 'pushy' dogs. I always avoid the two I bump into on our walks because there is always some sort of minor incident, usually unwelcome attention. No aggression so far.

Our problems with boxers were the other way round...

Doc came to me straight from the adoption kennels and had to be socialised with other breeds of dogs. He seemed to have a particular problem with boxers, snapping a couple of times at a young male one who lived down the road. At the time we were taking some obedience classes with a very good (APDT) trainer to help socialise him, so I raised this problem with her. She explained that it was not surprising that Doc was having difficulty reading these dogs' body language - many dogs do, because their shape makes this confusing - no tails to wag, squashed up faces which tend to look as if they're snarling. Pugs similarly are a difficult breed with their squashed faces and curly tails - certainly when she brought along a black one called Elvis the next week Doc nearly barked the hall down!

I think it's also fair to say that boxers as a breed are playful and bouncy by nature, in a way that greyhounds and some other breeds may find rude. I see them adopt this sort of 'gladiatorial' stance with their shoulders braced when spotting another dog - usually that's because they want to play, I think, but if there's a misunderstanding it could lead to a fight. And their ideas of play are again very different - boxers and the bullbreeds like wrestling and rough-housing, greyhounds like 'chase and nip' - again, lots of potential for disaster!

On a more positive note Doc has over time acquired one good boxer friend, whom he saw and greeted very nicely just this morning in the park. Buster is an unusually calm and gentle specimen of his breed... the two of them don't play so much as just trot around and sniff at things together!

"It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753.

My brother has Boxers and I think they are a great breed. Before we adopted our first grey it was a toss up between getting a Boxer or adopting a grey. His Boxer is very possessive if my brother so the only time we have an issue with his Boxer is if one of my dogs gets too close to my brother. My one grey and the Boxer play in the yard together (supervised) and seem to get along. My grey Holly seems to not like the Boxer and can be a little snippy but that is her as much as the Boxer. I really think it just depends on the dog's upbringing.

My SIL's boxers are very protective of her and the kids. They are untrained, unhandled, unsocialized and have bitten three people and attacked several little dogs. Why they (mother and son) haven't been PTS yet I'll never know. But the breed needs to be trained. They are very powerful and too high energy to not be trained.

We've had labs, beagles, boxers, mutts and greys (mine) in the extended family. Give me a grey anyday.

Not boxers for us, but actually Labs. Out of the 5 unprovoked dog attacks we endured: 4 were labs, 1 was a golden. I've been conditioned to be nervous around labs now even without my dogs present. :(

I don't mean to say the breed is bad. I just wanted to know if there was something about Greyhounds that possibly threaten some Boxers and made them go on the attack. Thought maybe somebody else had experienced the same thing. We have several Boxer friends that are not aggressive, just playful in that Boxer way.

Bommer has been nearly attacked by three different Boxer or Boxer mixes. This was the only time it happened in a dog park. It was 6:45 am and my friend was dogsitting while I was away. She saw that it was empty and thought she'd let him wander around off leash a little before she walked him. The Boxer owner said his dog was friendly but for some odd reason it immediately went on the attack. The owner felt awful and said that his dog had never done that before.

Bommer is recovering just fine. It was pretty scarey because he had bites on all four limbs and both shoulders. Two of the bites are deep tissue tears with air pockets. We're just waiting for the swelling to go down and hoping he doesn't get any infections.

I don't usually take Bommer to dog parks because I have other better options. We spend most of our offleash time at the beach. My take on it is that this particular dog park was very small and that is not a good thing. A Greyhound's best defense is his speed and in this situation he could not get away. I also never muzzle Bommer. He was muzzled 24hrs after his leg break and now just bangs his head against the wall when he has one on. I also agree that it would put him in a bad position if other dogs are not muzzled.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback and I hope all is well with everyone! Bommer and I are hanging at home together this week. He's loving it!

My Razzle LOVES the dog park, but his unremitting curiosity sometimes puts him in scrums where he's not safe. I've laid down a rule that if we're there five seconds or an hour, the first time growling, snapping (if I even THINK I see a tooth) we're done for the day right that minute. It's tended to keep his very long nose out of affairs he shouldn't be involved in.

Ironically, the only aggressive behavior I have to cope with is a an out-of-control undisciplined labrador (!) that has a contract out to murder my Maltese, Mo. Needless to say, the Maltese wants to fight back -- Razzle, very intelligently, hides behind me every time we see him!

Goes to show you, you can turn the nicest breeds in the world into evil finks if you can't manage to be the LEADER OF THE PACK. ! The problem is the HUMANS :puke not the DOGS. :D

My son had a boxer for 10 years (they lost him last year) and he was the sweetest dog you could have. Never showed any aggression toward anyone. They have 2 boys and they could do practically anything to him. I did not have Chance at the time so can't answer as to how they would have interacted.
