Guest odiesmom Posted September 26, 2007 Share Posted September 26, 2007 Hi-- This is my first posting on here. I just joined after hearing about it from a friend. I hate to start my first day off with such gloom news.. I adopted "Odie" last Christmas. Odie raced about 38 races and then went to the adoption agency which he stayed for quite awhile (sadly)... I cannot understand why noone had adopted him before me. I always say he was waiting for me.. Well anyways life with Odie is greyt. He was very shy when I got him and I was worried he would not bond with me. I couldn't have been more wrong. He has bonded with me very well and is the sweetest soul in a dog I have ever seen. I love him dearly. Odie is only 4... He has been limping for over 2 weeks now. I took him to his normal vet and they could not see anything physically wrong and sent us home with pain pill for him and strict instructions for couch rest for a week. Now that was not easy!!!! Well he is still limping. So I decided to take him to a different vet after a recommendation from Odie's kennel keeper at the Adoption agency to a doctor that is very well education in the breed. He pinpointed Odie exact spot of pain within 7 minutes of meeting us. Unfortuntely he thinks Odie has bone cancer. I feel devastated!!! I take him back tomorrow so they can do a full x-ray of his leg. I am praying for good news. Does anyone know the percentage of Greys that get bone cancer?? And at such a young age?? Does anyone know the success rate?? Please say a prayer for my guy. I hope next time I log on I have better news to report.... Even if you can't go to Ohio to meet with him, he will help you and guide your vet through the process should Odie be diagnosed with bone cancer. If it is cancer and you decide to go with amputation, Dr. Couto can tell your vet what to expect post-surgery and what painkillers greyhounds react to the best. He will even supply your vet with chemo drugs, if your vet is willing and able to do chemotherapy. He is a wonderful man and he will answer your emails. My Bodie was diagnosed with bone cancer in the beginning of August. I contacted Dr. Couto, and since I am able to travel to Ohio, he had us out there the next day with a surgical and cancer team already assembled for Bodie. I am friends with Barb, the Mom of Bosha, who has been cancer-free for two years now. Miracles can happen and I am hoping for that for Bodie. It's been a difficult road, but in the past two weeks Bodie has been more like himself than he has been in months. And, as Dr. Couto predicted, he does everything on 3 legs he used to do on 4 and he doesn't seem to miss the fourth leg at all. And in a final note, maybe it's not cancer at all. I have another grey who tore a muscle in her shoulder while racing and it was never repaired. Every now and then she will limp for several days and have all the symptoms of bone cancer. But a good vet was able to tell the difference and now Rainy has painkillers for when she limps. I'm hoping that you get some similar news for Odie, and it's not bone cancer at all. But if it is, I can tell you from first hand experience that the people on this site and on Circle of Grey are very supportive and helpful and they will stand by you and help you, no matter what you decide to do for Odie. To fill everyone in, our first apt shows signs of good news for us as Dr Slack could not see anything on the x-ray. But that was short lived... After sending it away to the x-ray specialist, he too thinks Odie has bone cancer. I got the call today. He is suggesting a biopsy next. I am scared to death and sick to my stomach. I feel like I am having an outter body experience and that I will wake up from a very bad dream. I want it all to end. Is there still hope? Dr. Slack said there is a small small chance he could have a benign cyst. But that it was very unlikely. I am sorry I am so upset I cannot really even type right now. Aerosmom Posted October 2, 2007 Share Posted October 2, 2007 My Snickers was only five when she started limping and I absolutely believed that she couldn't possibly have bone cancer....fast forward to one course of Metacam and a persistant limp and then a positive x-ray after a clear one earlier...it did sink in. The important thing right now is to get a definitive diagnosis and then learn what you can and then see what you can do for Odie. Snickers was so young that I chose to amputate and give her chemo. She was doing reallly well but something -- probably a blood clot or possibly a brain tumor (more unusual) got her just before her fourth chemo. Nevertheless, I would still make the same decision now because of her age. I wanted to give her the best chance, and Snickers was so full of life and enthusiasm it didn't seem right to not do everything I could. Join Circle of Grey and get their input and also try to consult with Dr. Cuoto's group at Ohio State University. Read and learn. Once the intitial shock wears off, try to make the best decision you can. My reasoning was that even if I had Snickers for another year, it was a good portion of her life and she was so full of enthusiasm for everything. Unfortunately luck ran out for us, but there are a lot of greys who have undergone the same and are doing well....the amputation actually helps alleviate the pain of bone cancer. Some survive beyond the one year as well....I think they can do a blood test to see if there is an elevated level of an enzyme that is a good prognosis indicator. I'm very sorry you are dealing with such a lousy diagnosis, but there is hope. I wish you all the strength and the best for you and Odie. It is not an easy deciision and it really is hard when your dog is so young. Sending hugs and wishing for the best for Odie. We did amputation and chemo and now use arte as well. He is the joy of my life and I know the blow to the gut feeling you are dealing with. Certainly contact Dr. Couto. We are making the trip to OSU next Monday for a check up. The news is devastating but these precious dogs live in the moment, we are the ones who fret about it every moment. Treatment options usually involve amputation which is not nearly as bad as it sounds. Given he is a young dog he could have many good years in front of him.
