Dave aka Dave S Sport has passed on to a pain free life, living amongst the many special angels that have passed before him. At just about 9 you were too young to leave but your body told me other wise, I didn't want to let you go but knew, for you it was only right, it was only fair, it was done in love.

Some of you may not know the full story of Dave and how he came to become a member of our pack.

Many years ago Dave was a racer in a kennel that I trained. Dave to many was just your "average" dog. He ran A when he was running good and C when he was running not so good. He always gave his all and was the MOST PERFECT kennel dog anyone could ask for.

To many he would be over looked. He didn't stand out for any other reason than he was a good boy. He never pushed to get attention and was basically a wall flower. BUT I knew that Dave was a special soul. He knew on race day it was time to be weighed and he would step up on the scale all on his own. Then after walk straight to his crate. He would NEVER pee his crate and was the cleanest boy I have ever met. I swear this boy could hold it forever if he needed to.

If it was raining out there was no way Dave would go out in the rain. When he could hold it no longer he would just stand in his crate to get your attention. He then would run to the door, pee on the door frame just outside and rush back in just to hunker on down back in his crate. Dave always had the fluffiest of beds because he was such a special boy to me.

When Dave retired I already had a home full so I placed him with a group. The group placed him in a home where there was a 4yr old boy. The boy took to calling Dave simply Dave the Dog. For any racing folks that name may ring a bell. It should. Our very special racer was named after our boy Dave.

Dave lived in this home with his 4 yr old boy for about a year or so. When it came time that this family built a new home they stated that "our new home does not accept dogs" so Dave was bounced back to the group where it was thought that he would live out his life there.

I had other plans and started to work on them. Kevin (DBF) didn't want another hound but one night of drinking with his family in town and lots of sweet talking Kevin finally agreed to have Dave come to our home.

In steps Mike and Judy, (LOVE YOU GUYS) :) I believe in March it was that Dave came to our home.

Just as in TRUE Dave fashion he took it all in stride. There was not a bark or snarl from any hound in our home. He was accepted as if he had been here all his life. Was it because all the hounds had smelt Dave on me from years in the past when I was working the kennel, was it because they just knew that Dave was a special soul, or was it just because Dave was an amazing boy? This I will never know but they accepted him as if he had been here all along.

Dave lived his life like I had known him from his racing days. Just an amazingly good boy, a boy that never asked for much and was happy to just lay around and enjoy life. He loved his food and he loved to sleep. When he did go out to have a quick run he put his all into it. It always showed in his face his pure joy in running.

When it was raining, as in the kennel, he wouldn't go out. He could hold it forever and you never had to worry about Dave peeing in the house.

Dave has always been an old soul, he lived, he loved, he ate and he slept. He loved his belly rubs and he loved to give you kisses when you didn't know they were coming. He loved to help me cook and always had to sample the meal :D

Dave, in some peoples eyes was just a black greyhound, to me Dave was a very special soul, a soul that taught me so much (thanks Hilda for pointing that out) ;) more than just a greyhound Dave was a friend, a family member and a mentor.

Dave passed in true Dave fashion. A proud boy surrounded by love, tears and heartache

Oh Heather, what a beautiful story ... thank you so much for sharing it. I'm sure Dave's heart gave a leap of joy when he moved into your home. He sounds like a truly special friend and I'm sure you were the same to him. And, like a true friend, you did the hardest thing by letting him go today. Our thoughts are with you, and I know that Dave will be looking out for you.

Take care,

Ruth

Heather thank you for the story of Dave. As I was reading it, I thought, and in true Dave fashion he waited till you realized he was meant to be in your home with you. I feel he knew that all along, just took you a little longer.

Run in the clouds Dave, chase the rainbows, and know it neve rains at the rainbow bridge.

It never thunders at the Bridge, and your food bowl is ALWAYS filled.

So strange not living in Atty World. I was a love struck handmaiden to your every whim.
