Guest Chris
Some of you know that Elsie had subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma and had given me lots of support and encouragement. I wanted to let you all know what transpired last night. We're in the process of moving to Wisconsin --left MS on Tuesday, closed on our house in WI today... lots if upheaval for all involved, mostly for the dogs. We went to bed early yesterday because of the long day we'd had and the long day ahead of us. We kept hearing one of the dogs sneezing, but didn't think much of it. Around 9:30, HannaH started whining and carrying on like nobody's business, but we ignored her for a while, thinking it was just the strange place, she'd calm down in a few minutes. She didn't calm down, if anything, she got more agitated. Tony turned on the light to take her out for a walk, and said "You'd better get up!" I got up to the sight of a considerable amount of blood on the carpet, the walls, the sheets, etc. Elsie was lying near a large spot of blood on the carpet, her muzzle coated with blood, licking blood off her paws, which were covered. I imagine at that point, she had lost more than a pint. I immediately grabbed the phone book, looked up vets, found one with a picture of greyhounds and called. I knew I wasn't going to get anyone but assumed there would be an emergency number. There was, I called and drove Elsie there. The vet said she had started to bleed out from her cancer, and had probably scratched her nose because of the discomfort, causing the bleeding on her muzzle. The blood sprayed around the room was caused by her sinus cavities being filled and her sneezing out the blood. I could tell she was exhausted, body and soul, and made the decision to help her to the bridge. The vet gave her the shot to calm her down. She lifted her head and looked at me and sighed a huge sigh...almost like in relief. Then she just put her head down and closed her eyes. A couple minutes later, the vet gave her the shot to end her pain. She breathed three huge breaths, then died. She is being cremated privately and her ashes will be returned to us early next week. We will miss her terribly. The others seemed to know as soon as I got back to the hotel without her, that Elsie was gone forever. Cole is a mess, though I don't know if it's Elsie's death or if he's not feeling well. There's an obvious difference in the pecking order as HannaH is now challenging everything Winter does the way she did Elsie when we first got them. Winter will put HannaH in her place soon, I'm sure, and all will be back to "normal". I know we only had Elsie for a short while --just over a year-- but from day one with her, she was so special to me...like she took out my heart and put hers in its place. I keep looking for her, but knowing she's at peace and running free helps a lot. Thank you all in advance for your messages of sympathy and support -- knowing I had this community to turn to has helped as well. sadly, chris
