  1. Sorry for your loss. Keep the memories of the good times close to your heart.
  2. We are on our fifth and sixth greyhound. Previously we only had one at a time, but have found that having two is no more of a problem then having one but double the fun. I have a friend who has about five, plus two others of a different breed. He likes to feed his dogs a raw natural diet and they are very healthy. I cook chicken, turkey, beef, and fish for our guys and buy sales and freeze. Saves time. They also get some milk bones, but mostly Costco Kirkland dog bones and they LOVE them. They also get Nylabone chicken natural from Costco when on sale. I get about a dozen bags at a time as they only go on sale twice a year. They love the apple/chicken round dog treats from costco also. My boy has a beautiful heavy black coat and thick. My girl had bald thighs when I got her, she was two, but with our diet, she has a nice layer of hair there. I had one boy, called Stormy and he was a really big boy. He was very healthy, but never did get any hair on his butt. Some are just like that. Whole Dog Journal has a lot of info on dogs. Also greyhounds are different medically than a lot of other breeds.I too grew up with many different breeds, but was surprised to learn just how different greyhounds are. I only give my greyhounds shots that are required by law and are associated with the area where we live. When they get their shots, it is only one of a kind at a time. I belong to the Greyhound Initiative. We also go to various greyhound events so they can socialize. There are many organizations to be a part of, it depends where you are. Did you check out the Vet page for greyhounds in this site. It is very good. We use the Seresto Flea and Tick Collars made by Bayer. We have used other collars and the spot on, but our dogs got pretty sick from the spot on, even when we use only half at a time. Since I put the Seresto Collars on them, we have not had one tick and we live in a park area where there are lots of deer, etc. and they have no bad reactions. We choose to get Healthy Paws Insurance for our girl. We love being owned by our greyhounds. We got addicted to them back in 1989 and its been greyhounds since. I love this site as everyone has been so very helpful when my guys have had issues and they are very compassionate and very caring. I have learned that each have a beautiful unique personality to be appreciated, different needs and playful ways. I go on cause I just love them so much. I am so happy to see that another greyhound has found a greyt home and too want to congratulate you as you enjoy your journey.
  3. My human son was born with hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and they put a shunt in at one month of age and he is almost 39 yrs old now. If you can get radiation, perhaps you can find out of they put shunts in dogs. That would relieve some of the pressure and damage done by the pressure. A long shot perhaps. My son's shunt drains to his stomach with no problems . Once the blockage is gone, shunts are no longer needed. In my sons case, his blockage went away as it was a hardened blood clot. They left the shunt in even though it is no longer needed. I never heard of this for a pet, but who knows, you can ask if it has ever been done. I hope that you get more time with your grey.
  4. So sorry to hear about your Chad. We had to make that decision for our HeartSweet back in 2014. One of the hardest decisions we have to make. May God be with you during this journey and keep your head high and one day you will see her again. HeartSweet looked a lot like your Chad. She was our third greyhound. We are now on number six. We have two at a time. They are carried in our hearts forever and each is very special. Hugs to all of you. We were with our baby girl when it was time also. As she went home, she had lots of hugs and kisses, her favorite blanket and toys.
  5. Thank you for sharing. Those of us who have lost our greys to the dreaded disease are always on the watch to protect those we have. You are very thoughtful.
  6. Thank you for sharing your find. Those of us who have had to deal with our pets and cancer are always searching.
  7. Still doing great on the Seresto Collars. Walks thru the forest under the trees and in fields of tall grass and me hanging on to them for dear life as they did see a real deer. Ugh. That was a little hard on the shoulder. It was a fawn. The fawn wanted to come close to see my Pasadena, but Surprise barked so much, that it wondered away. Another day.
  8. Wishing you the best. I do not know where you are from, but Greyhound Friends Of NJ got my San Tan Snuggles with her broken leg from the track. They sent her to a hospital and had it repaired. I got her four days after the cast was removed. The hospital there did a great job. Linda Lyman should be able to tell you where the repair was done if you are interested. http://www.greyhoundfriendsnj.org/ Ohio State I understand also has vet services as well as the University of PA. Dutton Road Veterinary Clinic is near Philadelphia Pa and work with greyhound rescues, etc. They have done a lot of work on their legs. I met them at Greyhounds at the Beach in Dewey Last Year as one of my greyhounds had a tumor and it turned out that he did not need it amputated. They were very informative and did negotiate the cost with us, which is something you do not see much of when it comes to medical costs. I saw a post someone sent to you about Dr. Cuto. He has a place in PA. Dr. Cuto has decades of repairing their troubled limbs. He is awesome. .
  9. I once had a dog that got near a toad in the yard and it was really a mess. Hope that she did not get something like that. I got a bite on my toe from a black widow spider and it sent me to the hospital with a heart issue a few years back. Are there any critters in your area that she may have gotten ahold of by accident? I know that if they are not considering something, they do not usually test for it for humans or dogs.
  10. Thank you for sharing your last moments together. I know it is a very private time, but please know that you are not alone in your pain. Our prayers are with you both. She is soooooo beautiful.
  11. Perhaps it would help a little if you had a bucket list for your greyhound that you could complete together? My girl loved the ocean and loved just being in the warm water. We made her a little hole to lay in and the water would come up over her. It gave her comfort. She liked the beach a lot. Favorite meals, a toy, a soft blanket. What ever works for them. When she could no longer walked any more and could not properly do her duty without it getting on her, we knew it was time. But sharing a few more special moments together if you can, will help both of you out a bunch. It is never a good feeling when this happens, but heartbreaking. Just try to do some special things that you may not have had the chance to do before at the end. It helps everyone. As for myself, I go out and bring home another greyhound to fill the hole in my heart immediately. That really helps my soul. Just saying.
  12. Seems like a long time to be sick over chicken. Have they done an xray of her stomach/thoracic area to see if she got into something else that is not showing up on the blood tests that they have done? Praying that Peggy gets well soon.
  13. Checking back in again. The Seresto Collars are still doing their job in spite of the crazy weather we have been having in our area, the walks in the State park and all of the wild critters we have living in our Area. No ticks, No Fleas in spite of the little white one digging holes and than rolling like a banshee in the dirt. There are times you would not know she was a white greyhound with a little brown ticking color. My older black boy is so good at just staring at her being crazy. Love every minute of it. They are so different, but love each other just the same. I will never get enough greyhound.
  14. I use a Pet Assure vet and I save 25 percent on all inhouse treatments. (This is not for special or emergency care Centers) Some of the emergency care centers will give a senior discount, but only if you ask. Depending where you are, if you can find a vet who does greyhounds in your area, you may be able to save some dollars that way. Pet Assure is a discount program. You can also register your pet there in case your dog gets lost. I got pet assure when I had two very sick dogs and they do not care if you have pre-existing conditions or not. It all about advertising for the vets. You pay one fee a year and you can register up to four animals with them for one fee and it does not matter if you have a cat, a dog, a bird or whatever. The one fee will give you the discount for all of them. I live near DC and one of the vets in our area said that he likes it in the area, cause he can charge just about what he wants. I decided he was not my vet.
  15. Both of my greys eat about a cup at meal time three times a day. I try to feed them either chicken or turkey and some beef I cook. I then give them about a cut of milk to wash the meal down and then give them a dental bone to clean their teeth some after eating. My younger one is a three year old girl, I got about a year and a half ago. When I got her, she had a bare butt, but now it is nicely covered with white hair. The other one is a boy who is almost ten years old. He eats his food with gusto. The girl will eat a little slower or save it for later. If she does not eat when I offer them their meal, I come back to her a little later and she will eat very nicely. That works for us just fine. They have access to water anytime they want it. I never put food down for them just to munch on to keep them busy. If she does not want her doggy bone, she will bury it and than go back and get it a short time later. She tries not to let him see that she buries her bones, as he will retrieve and eat it, when she turns her back. If he does that to her, I just give her another one so she does not loose out. When that happens, she will flaunt her bone in front of him to let him know she still has her prize. It is a lot of fun around here when they eat. I do however, feel that the heat bothers us all when it is in the 90's. Even us humans eat less. I do not think I would worry too much if they do not finish the meal right away. Especially when the vet seems to think things are just fine.
  16. Just checking back in here to say that my dogs are doing great with their Seresto dog collars. Still no ticks. Fleas have never been a problem. But still no reactions or such. Best that they have ever done with a flea and tick product.
  17. Wow, the tribute that you gave to Daisy, well words are not enough to describe. What a wonderful time you had together. My tears run down my face as I read all about her and looked at your pictures. It all touches deep in our hearts. Sorry for your loss but also happy that she gave you and you gave her such joy and and a very special life. God Bless.
  18. I am so sorry to hear about Flower. It breaks my heart to hear that you had to go through this. God placed her with you for those four years because He knew that she would have the best home ever. Sometimes He calls them home early for reasons we will never know. I pray that you will have peace and solace during the time of grieving. You will have her in your heart forever until ;you are reunited one day. Greyhounds are forever. Amen.
  19. Still hoping and praying for Flower. Lost one girl to osteosarcoma and one to GME. My current nine year old has some issues that seem to be going away. He had the FU5 shots via my vet who only agreed to try it one time with the direction of Dr. Couto. At first it looked like they did not work as he got a third tumor where the second one was removed, then got a fourth one on his front leg. I was advised by three surgeons to amputate his left front leg to the shoulder. The tumors were so small and always local. The third one had gone away and the fourth one has basically disappeared. His blood test are not showing anything unusual. It is like the chemo kicked in a little later. I did also change his diet to turkey and chicken, supplements and yogurt and milk and bonebroth. That was about ten months ago. He plays like a dog that is about five or six. But does have some issues keeping up with his 3 year old companion. She likes to head butt him and we are working on that. I am taking this as a miracle that God has given me to have more time with him. Amen. I am praying for you and Flower. There is hope sometimes where there my appear to be none. My boy never raced, too big and came to me directly from the greyhound puppy farm at 18 months old.
  20. Hooked Members 859 posts Location:Alexandria, VA I am hoping that your girl has a quick recovery. I will be watching to hear greyt news. Posted 12 June 2017 - 09:10 AM Ironic I found this as we are pretty sure my girl has the same issue. It swelled up under her tongue yesterday, but it's significantly better today. Quote MultiQuote
  21. Great news/ Surprise appears to be recovered. I spoke to the vet today and he said that the only comments from the outside lab was it appeared to be an inflammation. We will finish his course of Doxy by weaning him off. Total of 12 days The cause is unknown, but he thought that it could have been a bite from a squirrel found in the yard or trauma from my younger dogs head butt. Just so happy to see it went away without surgery. Keeping our fingers crossed there is no return of this. Amen. Thank you for all your great info and advice as it helped even the vet I was able to cancel surgery.
  22. My Surprise is looking 50 percent better this morning. I continue with the antibiotics and pain pills until I get the written report from the outside labs hopefully tomorrow. Everyone has given me awesome information and events of what happened to them. I will continue to monitor information received as it is very helpful. This evening I will be talking to GFNJ who has some experience with this. This is the adoption agency where we got our last two sweeties. Linda said that she has seen this before in some of the greys when they came from the track. If his swollen areas go down more and depending on the lab report, I will forgo surgery at this time. It is a wait and see right now and a great time for me to gather information from fellow greyhound friends of their experiences. Thank you so much for your information so far. I will keep everyone posted as to the results. He is eating really good and even started to chew his bones. He drinks a lot of water and pees really good. He can hold it for a while, so my husband gave him the nickname of Tank. His throat seems to still be a little sore if touched much. So no chin rubs right now. Yesterday his lips were bulging way out and not so today.
  23. I give my guys edible chicken Nylabone once a day after breakfast. They are not real cheap/just middle of the line at normal cost. I belong to Costco, so when the chicken Nylabones go on sale, I purchase at least ten bags or more. They do not go on sale very often. At least that way, I have enough bones to last me until the next sale. I got two dogs. They love them. They are a lot like a dental bone, but much more tasty. Even my husband loves to smell them. If I do not have them on hand, I get a scornful greyhound look. Sometimes the girl goes out and buries hers in the yard. She loves to bury her bones and than dig them up a short time later. It is so cute. They like to try and play tricks on one another so they can steal from each other. When they get in that mood, I monitor them to teach them that will not work in our house. For their second and third bone of the day, I give them Kirkland bones from Costco. They love them too. Since I feed them small meals thee times a day, they get a bone after they finish their meal and some milk. My guys do great with that procedure. Keeps them a little busy too. If you do not want to buy bones, you can get plenty of natural recipes on line. My boy dog is very big and if I gave him an artificial bone that he could not chew, he would try to swallow that, causing hospital time. I actually caught him trying to do that years ago and that was enough for me. Good thing is they only play with toys. Amen to that.
  24. Thank you for sharing this article. Everyone who has lost one of their precious babies knows the hope of a cure to this hellish disease.
