  1. I feed my two separately and watch them until they are done. We have had Wylie a year now and he still growls/snaps/barks at Razzy when she tries to get on the couch with him and she is too close. She just ignores it though and gets up there anyway, even if there is no room for her. Eventually they work it out. If I thought it was a real threat I wouldn't let them on the couch together, but for him I think it's more of a grumpy "leave me alone". You will learn their limits over time and they will too. Separating is best if you have any doubts.
  2. He's beautiful! His coloring reminds me a lot of my first greyhound (and love of my life), Quiet Man, pictured in my signature. He picked my husband and our lives were never the same after that (in a good way). Congratulations and thank you for giving him a good home
  3. Razzy ate a small green dry erase marker and was fine. Lots of green things came out in the poop a few days later. My girl loves plastic!
  4. We walk every day, and in these temps the walks are shorter, and the layers are heavier. It takes me longer to get us all dressed & undressed than the walk itself! lol They wear their normal fleece coats, plus snoods, plus an extra overcoat that is fleece-lined wind-breaker type material. I have been starting to use mushers secret on their paws if the roads are really a mess too.
  5. When I had my first greyhound, I was a flight attendant and my husband was a police officer. You couldn't get more crazy than those two schedules and he did just fine for several years
  6. Congratulations and kudos to you for doing your research. The more you find out about greyhounds, the more you will love them. I basically fell into my first greyhound with no experience or knowledge whatsoever, pretty much took him home blindly, but he was the love of my life and started me down the path of a world filled with greyhounds. He was a problem child too, had a lot of aggression issues (probably on the more rare side) and I had to get help and knowledge after adopting hm. But he was still the best dog I ever had and I've never looked back. I agree they are not the breed for everyone, but it sounds like you are ready
  7. Also, just note that dogs can also get out of a harness if not fitted properly. My 2 greys wear the Wiggles Wags & Whiskers harness; Wylie because he pulls, and Razz because she sometimes spooks. I like them for both reasons. I have only walked dogs with a martingale if I know they are good on a leash, not shy, not pullers, not high prey drive, etc. Otherwise, I prefer a harness.
  8. Mine were on Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream and did well on it (about $50 for a 30 lb. bag). I have switched over to Natural Balance Duck & Potato (about $55 for a 28lb. bag). Both of my dogs have done very well on both foods. Whatever you choose, I would start with whatever they are currently feeling your grey now at the kennel, and very gradually switch over, keeping in mind that it may take a while to find the right food for him, and each switch should be done slowly. Good luck!
  9. Thank you for the video on the Heimlich. I took a canine first aid class, but i honestly couldn't remember the right technique - it's a greyt refresher!
  10. I'm glad you got her back, how scary! Carabiners are greyt way to prevent this & I wish more people would use them. Especially with winter coats, "leash fail" is way too common!
  11. My boy who had IBD and was on a prescription diet did well on the Venison formula. My current dogs who are only slightly sensitive have done well on the Duck formula.
  12. I have had good luck with the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient foods.
  13. I agree to muzzle in the yard at first. I always separate during mealtimes, and separate with gates while I'm at work. Also, until you know where everyone is sleeping, separating at night so them don't step on each other is important too. If you don;t think you can handle 3 on a walk, do 2 shorter walks instead.
  14. It totally depends on the dog. Razzy is still crated and we have had her 1 1/2 years. She has pee accidents and chews a lot of things that she's not supposed to. She has not earned her way out of the crate altogether yet. So don't feel bad!
  15. I've used a product called Botanical Solutions Tick Guard. I've used in in conjunction with Frontline, but I like the fact that it is all natural and chemical free.
  16. She reminds me so much of my Raspberry! I looked up their pedigrees & they share HB's Commander as a great great grandfather
  17. My house stays at 64 degrees in the winter. If I want to "treat" us, I will crank it up to 66, but that is all I can afford. The dogs will wear pjs when it is below freezing outside because my insulation in the bedrooms is not great either
  18. I'm actually in the process of switching my two from Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream to Natural Balance Duck & Potato & they have had amazing poops!
  19. I used to give fresh or frozen raw marrow bones and Quiet Man LOVED them, but he got a slab fracture from one and had to eventually have that tooth removed. Rawhides always make me nervous, but I have found the ones that are smooth without knots on the end are better than the knotted ones which they tend to pull apart and can choke. I think I gave a turkey neck only once (or maybe it was a chicken neck?) and he swallowed it whole so it freaked me out and I never gave it again. I've bought antlers but they get bored of them quickly. I am now trying to find something else for Razzy, not so much to clean her teeth, but to occupy her energy, especially with the winter coming. I bought an "Everlasting treat ball" from Starmark, and she popped the treat out within 5 minutes, another choking hazard. And I would also never give greenies again, another choking hazard. I would love to hear more suggestions & success stories, I am at a loss.
  20. I personally would not give Proin to one of my dogs again, even thought I know people have had success with it. Quiet Man began leaking & peeing in his sleep and my vet started him on Proin. The leaking stopped, but he had an increase in "seizure-like" episodes. He never had full blown seizures that I know of, but occasionally had episodes best described as confusion when coming out of a seizure. These increased on the Proin and I stopped it. I've had no experience with DES, but I don't know if it is is used on males.
  21. I just posted a thread in the food forum on fresh antlers http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/291668-fresh-antlers/ What is CWD? Now I am hesitant to give them the antlers.
  22. A friend has recent deer hunt ( ) and is saving the antlers for my dogs. Do I need to do anything special? Refrigerate, dry them out, etc? I've only bought one split & dry from the pet store.
  23. Wylie is doing much better! He was on a Benedryl regimen for a few weeks and he had an oatmeal bath and lots of brushing. That has seemed to get us through the worst!
