  1. My thoughts are with you.
  2. I have not amputated any of my dogs toes. It is the the only way to get a definitive diagnosis. But SLO is pretty obvious once you start looking at it all.
  3. Could very well be SLO. The nails fall off whole. With Isis they bleed, a lot. It is a good idea to google SLO and read up on it. Isis is on Vit E and Niacinimide. She has done a few rounds of doxycycline but we aren't anymore. All of her nails have fallen off and the quicks have dried up. They don't appear to be growing back. It is a very painful process when it happens as the quick is completely exposed. We used Tramadol for pain control when needed. Good luck.
  4. Nope, doesn't sting. As to the moisture, even in the hospital we always use a moisture barrier to heal wounds and rashes. Wounds need moisture to heal from the inside out. As the wound or rash starts to dissipate you use less and less salve.
  5. I've never liked Desitin. Go to a feed store and pick up some Corona. It is a salve that works wonders. I used it on my kids for diaper rash and it is actually a salve for cattle and horses. Or you could also pick up some bag balm, very similar and also works great.
  6. I'm not a "jump and run to the vet" type person, but a cough that has lasted for 5 days would be something I would want checked out. Hopefully you can get her in and that it is something very minor . Good luck.
  7. Kari I hope Lucky is feeling better and that he comes out with much more time.
  8. Good thoughts for Pinky. I hope she is standing and wagging her tail when you go visit today.
  9. It's just a sebaceous cyst. No biggie Just keep it clean. Sometimes they come back and sometimes they don't.
  10. It's not usually a new nail underneath, it's usually the quick that is exposed because the nail has fallen off. My dog lost all of her nails over a month's time (except one, one toenail) It's messy when they fall off as the quick bleeds and bleeds. My vet said absolutely not to be trimming or cutting on the nails as they are extremely painful. If your dog is in pain you need to have the vet give some pain meds to help. Isis is still on doxy, vit E, and Niacinamide. She had been taking Tramadol for the pain. Good luck.
  11. I'm glad they finally found it. I'm curious, on Aug 24 did you have x-rays done? Did your vet refuse to look into the possibility of an abcess? Also, how long was she on prednisone? Just really curious.
  12. Can you put up a photo? Is the collar getting tighter? If so take it off. Maybe get a shoelace and measure it and then measure again after a bit to see if it's getting bigger?
  13. Saw Mickey. He is a little shaky and scared but gave kisses and a few tail wags. He hasn't eaten much and he is getting iv antibiotics. They removed the entire sack and he has stitches from front to back . I didn't even think to count them. Vet said that he does not have a bleeding issue. It was more of a drainage that got infected on the inside and spread rapidly. He is keeping him longer so that they can be sure that the infection is clear. This will give my friend some time to fix the doors and frames that were damaged. I'll see him again this evening with my friend when she gets off work. This was a heck of an introduction to dog ownership. Thanks everyone for the good thoughts and advice. I appreciate it all.
  14. I'm headed to the vet this morning with some tater tots from sonic to visit.
  15. MaryJane, I appreciate the concern. The vet he has is excellent. He is at a hospital that has 24 hour care. I realize that most of the time you are doling out "worst case scenario" advice but please understand that I and the owner have done everything needed for Mickey. I know it's easy to sit back on a computer and tell everyone to quickly run to the ER vet, however in real life sometimes other things factor in. If this were a life or death situation we would have taken him in immediately. The treatment protocol may not be what you think is best but it is the plan that his owner and her vet have chosen. And I respect their choices. I came here and posted about the situation not so that people could judge his care but rather to see if anyone had any experience with it. I can promise this, he is loved and he is getting the care he needs. His owner is doing everything she needs to do.
  16. *sigh* poor Mickey. He did pretty good today at his apartment. I checked on him at noon and his mom did everything I told her. She had a shower curtain down, a blanket and a frozen kong... But forgot to latch the xpen . He did some damage to the frame by the front door but the good news is that the molding is the cheapest you could ever get and will be easily fixed. He ate for me and I took him outside and then I put him back in. 4pm was his vet appt. He is draining too much and is now infected . He went back under and they are keeping him through the weekend. The vet felt so bad and is not charging anything. I find that to be admirable as it's not his fault and sometimes stuff just happens. So he is just waking up and my friend is in tears.
  17. Kari I'm so sorry this is happening to Thunder. His story is soo similar to Steaks it makes me sad and it's difficult to read. Steak was 6 weeks seizure free when he clustered. I'm thinking positive thoughts for Thunder.
  18. Y'all are sweet but I bet any one of you would've done the same for a friend. She came over after school and when she walked in Mickey lit up. He missed his mom and she missed him. So I gave her some suggestions, she is going to pick up a plastic shower curtain and tape it to the floor then put his blanket on that. I let her take my xpen since he did well in it here. Hopefully that keeps him calm and the mess to a minimum. I will go over to her place about mid morning and check on him. If he is ok I'll just leave and then check again mid afternoon. If not I'll just bring him home and she'll get him after work. Hopefully by being with his mom he will eat more for her tonight she was picking up some hamburger and noodles on the way home They have an appt at 4pm with the vet. I already told her I would go with her.
  19. She does work full time. She is a kindergarten teacher. She has had Mickey for almost 5 months and this is the first time anything has happened. I just think the stress of it all and then her leaving Monday and also putting him in the bedroom/bathroom of her apartment really freaked him out. She has never put him in a room and shut the door before but was trying to minimize the drippy blood from being all over her apartment. She now knows why that didn't work. But because I am at home I didn't mind him spending a few days with me.
  20. I have been assured now by two vets that it will eventually go away but will take a lot of time. Believe me I freaked out the first time I saw it and then when she brought him to me I was just shocked. Mickey is hanging (heh) in there right now. He is not in any pain and he really doesn't seem bothered by it at all. He is mostly just missing his mom and is a bit stressed by the activity in my house. I have him xpenned in the living area with the other dogs and that seems to actually calm him more.
  21. MaryJane, he is going to be fine. His gums are fine. It is not doom and gloom. Yep, I cooked meat, added pasta and smooshed in some stinky wet food. Nada. I figure I'll give him just a little while and then try again. "Noogies" Yep, we are having a bonding moment today.
  22. Just spoke with her vet. He said that yes it was a blood clot and that he developed a seroma. (fluid drainage into a pocket) He suggested that we put some ice packs on him intermittently. Oh joy, just what I want to do for the afternoon The things we do for dogs. My friend is having a follow up appointment with the vet tomorrow and she asked me to go with her as well. I am going to also suggest some antibiotics and an antianxiety med for his SA. The boy is so stressed he isn't eating.
  23. Yes, obviously I know this isn't normal. I'm not freaking out because it's been a few days now and it's not my dog. I came on asking if anyone had ever seen or dealt with this. If I thought it was a "drop everything and run to the vet" I would. Anyway, he is very shy around me and the best I could get was him sitting down... I think he is wondering why the stranger is all up in his private space I have a call into his owner and have asked her if it's ok if I talk to her vet. This is her first dog that she has ever owned on her own. (besides family pets as a child) I also sent the photo and an email into my vet and just asked him a few questions. He is a friend as well so I think he will answer me a bit later.
  24. It is still swollen but not so "shiney" if that makes sense. I'll get a photo. And yes, it's been 4 days since the last photo. He was in the vet clinic for the last 4 days. She picked him up Monday evening. Last night called me because he tore up the place and she didn't know what to do so I told her to just bring him to me. He is now finally sleeping after whining and panting for the last 3 hours. (I gave him melatonin)
  25. Honestly I don't know what he did. He kept him for 4 days though. The poor boy is so skinny and on top of it has major seperation anxiety. He tore up her apartment yesterday (doors and door frames) while she was at work which is why he is with me today. I think I'll ask her if I can talk to her vet.
