  1. A friend of mine just got a Great Dane a few months ago. He is about 2 years old and on Thursday she had him neutered. She then sends me this picture and asks if it's normal... After gasping and frantically calling her to say "NO" it isn't normal she tells me that the vet said she should expect swelling... (I told her I didn't think that was just swelling and she needed to take him in immediately). About an hour later she sends this picture... I finally convince her that it isn't normal. ( Her boyfriend had convinced her that it was just his "balls" and that they were traumatized) After laughing at her dumbass boyfriend I tell her he needs to get him to the vet asap. Surprise surprise he has a blood clot. Anyway, he stayed at the clinic for the last 4 days and today I have him so she can work. He is still very, very swollen. I guess I thought maybe they would "drain" it or something. Have any of you had experience with this? I'm trying to convince her to see another vet just for another opinion. She is hesitant as she has already spent close to $3000 on what was supposed to be a routine neutering. Here is the sweet boy, his name is Mickey
  2. Isis is on Doxy, Niacinimide and Tramadol for pain as needed. She started losing a toenail here and there and then within about two months lost every single one of them. I asked about cutting them but the vet said no way, no how because it is too painful. It was easier to let them come off on their own. When the quick is totally exposed it is a nerve that is exposed so air even hurts them. We kept her on the tramadol for a while because it kept her a bit "sedated" or "drugged" and she would just sleep or lay around and not hurt herself and also not bleed everywhere. The quicks have now dried up and we are crossing out fingers that we don't go through it again. The niacinimide will be forever and we are also adding salmon oil and vitamin e caps to her food every feeding.
  3. Are they still bleeding and raw? Isis's dried up after two months. Now that they arent raw and open she is being puppyish. She walks and even got her excited to see me spins last week . I remember the overwhelmed feeling too. Blood everywhere and she just kept walking. I had to x-pen her in one area with a bed and an old towel to minimize the mess.
  4. Honestly I wouldn't put any boots on. With Isis her nails are so sensitive, thin and brittle that even just touching them hurts her. The quicks are dried up now but what remains is very painful to the touch that I think boots would hurt more.
  5. We had our lab before the Greys. I also have a JRT and a chi mix. We've not had any issues. Do you live with your boyfriend? I ask because some groups will not adopt to you if you have an intact dog at home. They want to see responsible pet ownership.
  6. Yes, they know their name. I have only renamed one of mine and it was my very first. She knew her kennel name, in fact still does, but quickly learned the name I was using.
  7. Do you have a Costco? Get the Zoni there. It is ridiculously cheap at Costco. I remember with Steak Walgreens charged me $175 for one month supply and Costco was about $30 for 3 months supply. Hope Thunder does well.
  8. While working my dogs are routinely in the house 8-9 hours. The difference is that I make sure they are good and tired before I leave. I have a yard so they go out twice before I leave in the morning and some of that time is spent chasing toys. When I see that someone is more bored during the day they get extra work. 20 minutes isn't that long. I would bump it up to at least 45 minutes and make it a brisk, fast walk. No stopping to smell flowers and not a relaxing walk. You should both be tired by the end of it. It means getting up earlier and maybe even you doing one and then your spouse doing another one before he leaves. He isn't being destructive so that is a good sign. He just needs to do more so that he is more tired.
  9. Is he getting exercise? You haven't said what you have done to try and work on this. A lot of us have been where you are and can give you some suggestions but need to know what you have tried.
  10. Is he getting exercise? Like Christie said above, a tired dog is a good dog. He needs both physical and mental exercise. Take up an obedience class and start walking him in the mornings and evenings. Not just a potty walk but a good long, tiring walk.

Your tribute was beautiful. I cried and laughed along with the stories about he and your daughter.
  12. Yep, and unless you keep her away from his bed next time he might hurt her.... I am not an authority by any means but personally don't buy in to the human Alpha/Pack Leader thing, especially when one of the "alphas to be" is a preschooler. Readily admit to being mentally impaired (and have a letter from a federal judge saying so) but I've worked with a ton of greys over the years with a great deal of success. I've given the stern word AS AN ADULT (at least in age) and hairy eyeball as needed, and most of my favorable dealings with greys were based on creating mutual respect for feelings and space, not farting over making sure I went through the door first. Putting food down and giving treats does not make an Alpha person (if there is such a thing, especially in the form of a child), it makes a human treat machine. My kids have learned that it is ok to say NO! As loud as you need if there is a dog in your way or if they are doing something wrong. They also know that I would never allow any of the dogs in the kids beds if the kids were asleep so they should not be in the dogs beds either, same with being awake. And especially after only a month's time. It easily takes 4-6 months before I feel comfortable with the dog and their personality and sometimes even up to a year or more if needed.
  13. I am going through the same thing with Isis. We just got back from the vet. She lost two nails about two weeks ago and then one last night and one this afternoon. The one this afternoon bled a lot and has left her pretty pale. The vet has drawn some more blood work and is worried that something else, along with Slo is going on. While driving home she lost another toe nail. Ugh. Blood everywhere. The vet upped her tramadol and said for me to continue the vit E and salmon oil. He wants to wait for the blood work results before he starts niacinamide. Those of you who have dealt with this before, was there another infection or something else going on?
  14. Hi, I don't know if you remember me or not... Anyway, I have kids and dogs. I will say that with one of our dogs she is more comfortable without the kids around. It's not bad and we just don't push. She is just not "into it". You mention you are worried he might feel "abandoned", I think he already does . He was probably put aside more after the baby was born and he got used to it. Not saying that you did anything wrong but more saying that maybe you need to do things with just him as opposed to making him "fit into the family". He is probably feeling out of sorts being made to take meds that make him feel crazy, being crated, and probably also being yelled at. I think at this point you have to start from square one if you want this to get better. You made a committment to him and you do owe it to him to help.
  15. I just use a measuring cup. Filled to the line at 1 cup and then I'm done. You are not serious about the beer are you?
  16. My 11 year old is going through slo right now. It is awful as when the nail falls off the quick bleeds and bleeds. I wrap it and just continue with the meds. I wouldn't put a 12 year old under for that at all. It can be managed and that is the course I am taking.
  17. Unless you have another reason for crating her I would just babygate her into the room she is comfortable in. I really only crate for a few reasons: potty training, excessive chewing, and if it's a new dog and I want to separate from my other dogs. Other than that as soon as I think the dog is comfortable I let them have more space. Since she is an only dog I would baby gate her in one room and over time and as you and she get to know each other you can start to give her more room. If you need to use the crate or just feel more comfortable with it you can use treats and toss them into the crate and praise her when she goes in it. So far she has realized that as soon as she goes in the crate you leave, to her that's not fun. You need to make the crate fun. Toss treats in it when you are home and don't shut the door. Give her a peanut butter filled kong in the crate while you are home. And use lots and lots of praise.
  18. Boo is just as sweet as she is gorgeous. I loved getting to know her. Michael cherished her and he knew you would too.
  19. Thank you everyone . She has eaten a small amount but not enough. Tomorrow we start cooking for her. She does love milk bones though! And, she sits! It is cute and sad at the same time. It's adorable that she tries to do tricks but her back end gets so shaky that it looks absolutely painful for her to do it. Did you know her?
  20. I'm calling her a red sable I have no real idea though. She is a dark red fawn but has some black in her coat as well. Her face is grey/white but she is very pretty
  21. My Isis was just diagnosed this morning. She has lost two nails within a weeks time. When she loses them they bleed like crazy. Any tips on helping her through that? My vet told me to do the Fish oil, Vit E and Doxy for the time being.
  22. I first heard about Zoey when a friend posted an ad on my facebook page about a dog in need of a home. The dog was 11 and had been purchased as a puppy. (AKC) The original owner passed away about 5 years ago and her son assumed responsibility. Fast forward and now son is married and has new baby. They also have a cute yorkie and Zoey is *old* and has incontinence and not fun anymore . So, as the son told me on the phone, "it's time for Zoey to have her own family" :vomit. I picked her up yesterday. She is scared and nervous but is very, very sweet. She came in and my crew was very nice to her. She hasn't eaten yet and that concerns me but we are working on it. She rings bells at the door when she needs to go out. We have been to the vet this morning and she needs some groceries and some love and care . (she does have a uti and we have antibiotics for that). Any way, meet Zoey Now, none of that "you are so great" stuff Just swoon over how pretty she is Because I know that if it had been any one of you, you would have done the same thing
  23. I just came across this thread and am doing some research. Isis has now lost two toe nails in a week. They appear to just fall off and then the base is just the quick and bleeds profusely. I bought fish oil just yesterday so have just started that. It's so odd, her nails have never appeared "strange" to me except the one horn that she has on her right front foot but she has had that forever. I trim her nails regularly so they aren't that long. I will be taking her to the vet soon to get started on antibiotics.
