This is a letter that any pet owner hopes that they never have to write. At 11:25 last night, my family and I had to help my poor, sweet Hazel Cross over the bridge. Her pain was overwhelming and we as a family made the hard decision that it was time for us to put all selfishness aside and help her be at peace.

On July 1st hazel was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and was given about 1 month left by our vet. The last 4 weeks have flown by. Lots of love, lots of treat's, many laughs, but also lots of tears. I got home from work yesterday, and when I walked in the door, and I didn't see Hazel waiting for me at the top of the stairs, I knew this couldn't be good. I slowly walked up the stairs, and found her laying on the floor in my room. She looked like she had just ran a mile. She was breathing so hard, I thought she was going to give herself a heart attack. As soon as she saw me, she tried to stand up, but was unable to walk, and let out the type of cry that broke my heart. I went downstairs to talk to the rest of the family. We made a decision together, after about 2 solid hours of going back and forth.

Every person has their own way of dealing with greif. The rest of my family was able to bring her to the vet, but I could not bring myself to go. As my 6foot5 strong younger brother pulled himself together, he picked her up to carry her out to the car, I held my sweet baby's face in my hands one last time. I told her how much I loved her, and that she had brought so much happiness into my life, and that Iwill keep her in my heart and prayers for the rest of my life. The car drove away at 10:45 last night.

As I layed sobbing on the couch with my boyfriend, around 11:25 I stopped crying, and told my Boyfriend Ben, that Hazel had crossed the bridge, and I felt her right next to me. The rest of my family, came home around midnight. They said that Hazel was no longer in pain and that she went peacefully. They said it happened around 11:25.

My sweet Hazel, you will always hold a special place in my heart. You were the most amazing dog I have ever met, and I know that you are in a better place with out pain.

:f_pink Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I know how you feel as we lost our first grey to osteosarcoma and like you when the pain and disease got too bad, we had him put down. It was a hard decision. So many people suggested amputation and chemotherapy but his quality of life would never be the same. :sad1 Hazel is a beautiful girl and I am sure that she along with our boy, King are now running without pain and playing happily. :candle

We here at Greytalk know your pain...and we're hurting for you too, I can barely see the keypads of the computer.

It is never easy to make that "decision" that you all had to make. You always wonder did I do the right thing and in this case you did. Its unfair to make her continue to live because you didn't want to let go. You did the best thing for her.

When it gets this far, its not about you anymore. The entire time you have had her in your life, you were the center of her life. She did everything for you. For some reason, dogs...no matter what breed, love us unconditonally and last night was a time for you to show her how unconditionally you loved her by letting her go.

Don't feel bad for not going with her...because she found her way back to your heart at 11:25 & that's where she settled.

She's in such greyt company...besides God, there are many many greyhounds up there running with her...cool breezes, lots of treats, windchimes tingling in the air...everyone is happy & healthy...there are no sicknesses in heaven.

We are here for you, for love & support! God be with you and your family! :f_pink:gh_lay

I can barely type through my tears. I am so sorry. Godspeed precious Hazel. May sweet memories bring you strength at this difficult time. I also have alerted my Angels so that they may show Hazel around the Bridge and show her where all the cookies are. :f_pinkf_yellow:f_white:grouphug:grouphug:grouphug
