Allergies? Mild gagging and wrenching hork

Recommended Posts

I'm guessing Milo and Jeter have respiratory allergies -- gag/wrenching hork a little, more often when outside.  Sounds like they're trying to get mucous out of their throats.  I know Benedryl is safe when dosed for dogs -- any other suggestions?

Edited to add:  I just found something online that said that contact dermatitis medications like Apoquel (sp?) may help respiratory allergies -- Milo has that medicine so I'm going to try it.

Zyrtec might help more than Benedryl.  Doxepin (Rx) in case it's laryngeal paralysis onset. Meclizine (generic Dramamine) for an upset stomach or nausea.

Rocket had allergies and Petunia has days like you are describing as well.  I think Petunia may have a little bit of LP as well, and the vet is coming this week to check that out just in case.

I have used Chlor-Trimeton for both of them when I suspect allergies. It doesn't make them drowsy like Benadryl but does seem to dry up the mucous that causes the gagging.  Petunia's breathing gets really raspy when allergies are bad, and the medication seems to help with that as well.

I just buy the generic from CVS - https://www.cvs.com/shop/cvs-health-4-hour-allergy-relief-chlorpheniramine-maleate-tablets-100-ct-prodid-1170247

EDITED TO ADD: The chlor-trimeton (chlorpheneramine) was reccomended by our vet so was used with her approval.  Zyrtec caused a great deal of irritability and pacing/panting when we tried that first.

Just be sure that any OTC human meds you try don't have artificial sugars secreted away in the ingredients list.  ;)

Both of them have done it very occasionally over the years, Jeter more than Milo.  Now Milo is doing it more, and mainly outside.  Still not very often.  Both are vaccinated against bordatella/kennel cough.

What would the dosage be per pound for the OTC alternatives?  I will try googling it.
