Gsd X Greyhound

Hi everyone! I love this forum and the greyt support you give each other. I have been wanting to get a greyhound for a while now and in one of my local shelters I saw a German Shepherd/Greyhound mix. She seems to be very sweet, but I wanted to see if any of you are familiar with that mix and could give me some advice? She looks a lot more greyhound than GSD but I'm not 100% about her behavior. This will be my first dog (since moving away from home and going to college) and so I wanted your advice on what foods are best, if a Martindale collar is a good idea, etc.

Thanks so much!

Welcome to GT! That is not a mix I have ever come across - we have a lot of lurchers* here in the UK but the most usual cross is greyhound and collie. German Shepherds can be lovely but I am afraid I have also met some problem ones round here, made dog-aggressive by their numpty owners. They do seem a bit nervous by temperament, so need careful handling and socialisation. Nothing you couldn't handle if you were sensible, I'm sure.

If she has a narrow greyhound-shaped head and neck, a Martingale will certainly be a good idea - much less easy to wriggle or back out of than a conventional collar.

If you're in the US, I can't advise on food. Here in the UK https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/ is a good place to check out foods.

* Lurcher= cross between a sighthound (greyhound, whippet etc) and another type of dog. There are also longdogs = cross between two breeds of sighthound.

A mixed breed dog, greyhound or not, is not any different from any other dog.

Most of what makes greyhounds unique as pets is their racing upbringing, training, and kennel life. A mongrel will not ever have experienced anything in any way like a greyhound life from birth until now, so whatever the mix is, it doesn't matter much.

Hounds, in general, are a bit bull headed. But ever shelter is just guessing.

I think a GSD x greyhound would be a lovely combination. Go for it. You can never be sure of any dog's behavior, but greyhound anything will still have greyhound characteristics.

Congratulations on your future pup! Be cautious of that guess of the parentage -- people tend to say any skinny dog is part greyhound. :-) We'll want pictures in any case.

I have a probable lurcher who was probably raised as a hunting dog. He was turned in as a stray to a pound. A few ways his behaviors are different from a greyhound's is that he is much more attentive to sounds and smells than my greys have been. And he has WAY more endurance -- you cannot tire him out. Big change from the lazy greys I was used to!

Food -- general advice is to continue with whatever the dog is eating now, as long as it's agreeing with it's digestive system, and then make any changes slowly, mixing it in increasing amounts over a week, for example. If the dog's poop is firm and not too frequent (normal range might be 1-3 poops a day), and the dog is maintaining weight, then don't be in a rush to change anything. With a new dog you also need to consider the possibility of worms or stress creating frequent and loose poops. The general GreyTalk philosophy is whatever works for your individual dog, your pocketbook, and your food ethics is a good food. Look at calories per cup rather than the manufacturer's recommended amounts.

Are you sure you didn't adopt a galgo? :lol

She's absolutely beautiful! So are the other dog and the cat.

BTW, you can't go wrong with a martingale collar.

Adorable -- especially those cute little eyebrow markings. And the bat ears!!!!!!! Can she maneuver the ears more than just full up to completely down? Many greyhounds can position them at many angles and degrees.

On collars -- like many people here, I use the martingale as a leash collar only, because of the small but potentially deadly chance of the collar getting hooked on something when you're not there, and in the dog's struggles to get away that martingale would just get tighter. Around the house, the dogs have collars with "breakaway" closures. Just another thing to obsess over. :) And it's an excuse to get an even bigger collar wardrobe.
