Diane4114
We have a new dog in the program. Whie with red. Very thin hair on belly;etc. I received a text from the foster home that he has a patch of ski peeling on his chest. I haven't seen it. Almost sounds like a sunburn peeling. I have tried to contact her, but she's away from her phone. No mention of blood, I have left a message to ask about that. Is there a sunscreen safe for dogs? He is able to go outside in the fenced yard whenever he wants. locket
Yes that can happen. Never heard about the peeling though. I put baby sunscreen on mine when we are out for long. PatricksMom
Baby sunscreen is safe and won't hurt. It could be skin adjusting though, either the stress of a change in environment or changing diet. Houndtime
Baby sunscreen is ok, but now there is sunscreen specifically for dogs. Our Paulie was very white and had very little hair on his under belly. His nose used to sunburn. greysmom
I use the spray on baby sunscreen as it's faster and easier to put on them. But it could be other things too, and he probably should be looked at to make sure he's OK. XTRAWLD
For whatever reason, white furred dogs tolerate the sun less than darker fur dogs....thusly the skin on a white furred dog is lighter, whereas on a darker furred dog is darker if this makes sense. White dogs from my experience and knowledge do seem to be more intolerant of the sun than others, so indeed it might be a sun burn. On his chest is a little weird of a location though.... palmettobug
Johnny gets these peely/dandruffy spots under his armpits. Could that be what they are seeing. Quote Current Crew: Gino-Gene-Eugene! 3greytjoys
Epi-pet is the only FDA compliant safe sunscreen for dogs: http://www.epi-pet.com/sunscreen.aspx All thin-furred dogs are at risk of sunburn, but I agree that light colored dogs (and cats) are at highest risk (white, fawn, etc). for sun damage and sun-induced cancers. After losing a Greyhound to hemangiosarcoma -- sun-induced cancer (plus multiple human family members to melanoma), our Greyhounds time in direct sun is very limited.
