carronstar
I am so sorry to hear this. We certainly do live in an area where evet costs are prohibitive. A fact I know only too well. It just seems so much like there is clearly something they are missing, or dismissing. Clearly your boy feels bad as do you. The last thing I would throw out here as a thought would be a consult with Dr. Couto. If nothing else, it would certainly be the LEAST expensive treatment you have had so far. gracegirl
Were you able to get him to any of the vets that I PMed to you? I would especially look into a consultation with Cornell in Stamford, CT. They have many specialists that could be of great help. PatricksMom
If a blood transfusion is his best bet (not saying it is, I don't know) ask if having a donor dog would decrease the price--I'm not in your area, but I'd bring one of my boys in to donate in a heartbeat if I were and I bet your adoption group can help you. Guest kar
the e vet is going around in circles mentioning every test imaginable. They said it would be very costly and they could use money up very fast. THey said one blood transfusion would only help him for the time being and he would probably be more. He ate a little this morning - but is not himself. I can't stand to see him suffer. They drew another bloodwork to test clotting factor. If clotting factor is bad they are stating could be liver disease. Don't know how I am going to go to work and leave him alone but I have no choice. my job is not very understanding regarding dogs. They said if he has liver disease and the clotting factor is bad he could have a bleed almost anywhere.
Batmom
Assume they're running an activated clotting time? How bad is it? The e-vet does know that Rimadyl can affect that??? Guest kar
I asked her that she said maybe all she did was run around in circles what is the treatment for rimadyl poisoning-is it hydration - if I do that and nothing else such as a blood transfusion would it help
Batmom
Keeping him well-hydrated is important. Keeping an eye on his liver values and RBC values (red cells/hematocrit) is important. If he has a serious clotting deficit, then you'd want to address that also. Is there no decent vet in your area? Anyone in your adoption group who can point you to better resources than you've found so far? Guest grey_dreams
It seems that the ER vet is not really on top of the situation if she refuses to even consider that it could be rimadyl toxicity, especially as she doesn't appear to have any other diagnosis. Hope you can reach out to the vets that gracegirl PM'd to you and find someone who is willing to follow a plan like what Batmom outlined. Hoping that your boy will pull through. CaliforniaGreys
I am more than willing to drive up and get them to Ocean State here in R.I. I understand funds are a concern, but with all the fundraising we've done, we can get the money! gracegirl
I provided a list of several vets within about a 30 minute drive via PM. My brother and SIL have two greyhounds and live in the next town over. Please, please contact either of the emergency vets I provided. And please apply for care credit. It will give you a six month cushion to pay back the bills. It's the next best thing to insurance. carronstar
As an FYI you can apply for CareCredi online and use it immediately. I know my evet keeps the apps at the desk so people can apply by phone.
Guest kar
talked to e vet again - results of scotch's clotting times came in and they are normal. That at least makes me happy - either it was an error or the rimadyl had an effect and since it has been 4 days since he had it it has improved. he did eat a little today and drink a little. I don't want to get my hopes up too far - but I will apply for the care card online to have it on hand. at least I know he is clotting properly so he should not bleed out. prayers for him please. Guest kar
how does carecard work - do you apply before you need it - and then do you not pay anything until you use it? don't know if they'll give me one - husband kind of ruined our credit during divorce
4My2Greys
Yes, you don't pay anything until you use it. The treating facility will set how long the term of payment will be. The first time I used it several years ago for my grey Nadir at Auburn University they allowed me one full year to pay the balance back recently though they have decreased the time to 6 months. Make sure you know what the length of time is and put on there what you know at the most you will be able to pay on a monthly basis. I just say this because the interest rate once the special terms are over are exceedingly high and if yomiss a payment or do not pay it off within the terms of the set time they will add all thai interest to your bill from the very first day of use. I'm not trying to discourage you from it, but you have to be very responsible with it if you do use. I by the way have used it several times, in fact I've got 2 months left to pay on Nadir's last visit to Auburn.

One of the evet's I go to start with 6 months whereas Animal Medical Center here in the city give 4 year terms. That might be because they are a non profit teaching hospital but it sure helps.
