kudzu Posted February 15, 2014 Share Posted February 15, 2014 I know of both but have no direct experience with either, though I did have a dog with a different lower motor neuron disease who was treated with pyridostigmine (Mestinon) which is one of the main drugs used to treat the symptoms of myasthenia gravis. Coonhound paralysis & myasthenia gravis are two different diseases. My understanding is that Coonhound paralysis is like a canine version of Guillain-Barré Syndrome & tends to show up after an infection. It's a polyneuropathy, a disease of multiple nerves. It's an acquired disease that damages the nerves themselves. Myasthenia gravis is a junctionopathy, a disease of the neuromuscular junction. It's usually an autoimmune disease. Sometimes it's mild, but other times it can be quite extreme. After resting a while dogs may seem quite normal but after any exertion or exercise they display varying degrees of weakness. Some polyneuropathies present with similar symptoms but I believe EMG/NCV testing can help differentiate a polyneuropathy from myasthenia gravis. I believe myasthenia gravis in dogs is often treated with immunosupressive drugs. Pyridostigmine is used for symptomatic treatment, depending on symptoms & severity. I hope your dog doesn't have either of these diseases. However, I know from experience that sometimes it's better to at least have a diagnosis rather than wondering what the heck is going on. AEB Posted February 15, 2014 Author Share Posted February 15, 2014 Gamo has been admitted to Tufts and it is suspected he has Coonhound paralysis. It seems the understanding of the disease is evolving. They say it is autoimmune. But what causes the switch to flip is unknown, although there are several believed causes.
