Fly Spray For Dogs?

I live in the woods in southeast Massachusetts, and the mosquitos and deer flys are HORRIBLE this year. Even on a 10 minute potty walk, my boy and I get dive-bombed -- they seem especially to swarm my boy, who is brindle and white. He wears Frontline for ticks and fleas, but I was wondering if anyone knew a dog-safe fly spray to keep the mosquitos and deer flys away. I put Off Deep Woods on myself, which helps, but I don't want to put it on him and make him sick. Any suggestions?

I've always heard that original-formula Listerine--the brown stuff--is effective as a repellent. There was a formula--I think 1 gallon of water, 1 quart of Listerine, 1 cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid--that was popular as a safe cleaning combo to use in kennels but that also was said to repel insects. People talked about using it on horses plagued by flies. I may have to try this for myself since mosquitoes are coming into the house with the dogs and me.

There's another variation of the formula here that is recommended as a safe bug repellent for an organic garden.

I've heard lots of good reports on this Listerine combo, but I've got to tell you that Snopes isn't impressed with the formula. They say the small amount of eucalyptus oil that might be in Listerine is unlikely to be effective.

ETA: Lots of places carry eucalyptus oil. Try a GNC health store if there's one in your area.

I was at the better quality pet store and they had Eqyss Canadian Marigold Horse Spray. I picked some up, I put is on myself and the pup and it works great. Smells really nice and the mosquitoes leave him alone, which means I don't walk through the fields spanking the bugs off his butt!

If you use monthly preventatives on your dog, K9 Advantix II claims to have a repelling feature for ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. I use it on Summer but my vet doesn't have the Advantix II and the plain Advantix doesn't have the repelling feature.

I have this Avon product for both of us and it seems to work great. I have used it camping in a provincial park and been able to compare Summer to other dogs when we're walking and meeting... and they have mosquitoes and things around them and Summer doesn't really. http://shop.avon.com/product.aspx?pf_id=31314&level2_id=303&pdept_id=344&dept_id=421

That sounds nice. I looked on their website (both Canadian and US) and I can't find it?

I use Flys Off for dogs - purchased through Amazon and it works great for my dogs. The only disadvantage is the spray bottle is small so it goes quickly. But I buy several bottles at the beginning of the summer and lightly spray my three hounds before we walk, but just once a day.

I ordered a product called Beat It! that was recommended in another thread recently and it's fantastic! I'm usually a magnet for biting insects and this stuff really works! Keeps them off the dogs too. It contains no toxic chemicals, isn't sticky, smells good, works up to 8 hours, and is safe for all animals. http://www.buybeatit.com/ You can order from Amazon or Jade & Pearl. I ordered an 8 ounce bottle just to try it out. I will be reordering the gallon size.

After reading your post I ordered some of this - it really works! Poor Nike is plagued by deer fly (probably because he looks like a deer!) and for the first time in a couple of weeks he didn't drag me home to escape the flies. Thanks!

When we were vacationing up in Michigan's upper peninsula, there were a couple of days where the biting stable flies were just insane, hordes of them biting both us and Bang. A local store suggested Centaura Insect repellent (http://www.amazon.com/Centaur-Insect-Repellent-Horse-Rider/dp/B007BQ8WC4) and it worked like a dream. Nothing else we tried helped. The active ingredient is picaridin, which has been used in Europe for quite some time, and has been available for a while in the US, too. It's safe enough to use on infants, so we felt comfortable using it on Bang. Such a relief.

I used Kids version Off Spray with great results in deep woods. If the flies really get nasty we start upgrading to various forms of adult people versions, I know not the best idea, but I'll take that over them getting large welts from deer flies. Alternatively we have been using a product I picked up at a local picnic that is less harmful and so far is yielding great results.
