Bullitt Update

Recommended Posts

Bullitt has been diagnosed with an inherited form of kidney disease. Apparently the first sign of this is a drop in protein detected in a urinalysis. Unfortunately most vet's don't do a urinalysis as a routine part of an annual exam so you don't know about it until the dog starts having symptoms, which is what happened in Bullitt's case. Even if found early I'm not sure there is anything you can do, it can't be cured, just managed. During his weekly check up this week we found that his protein levels have improved even more over last week and his kidney values have improved also. Unfortunately, his blood pressure is still not normal, it's better but not normal so we are adjusting his medication this week. All in all, even though he doesn't physically look any better, he actually is doing better. She loved the recipe for the home cooked kidney diet I've been giving and provided me with several more in case he gets tired of the one I've been fixing. Hopefully next week we will see a major improvement in his blood pressure but in the mean time he will get his special daily walk with Kevin, which he loves. We will manage this for as long as he is feeling good. It's all about quality of life from here on out.

When Pistol, JoeyB and Sammie have their regular physical this year we will have their protein levels checked. None show any signs of this disease yet but I want a baseline reading in case any of them start showing symptoms. I have also informed all of the owners of the boys siblings so that they can have their babies checked if they choose to do so.

Ask your vet if they have any sort of "senior pet" promotions. Occasionally, my vet has had this (I think November is Senior Dog Month), and there's been a discount on lab work for a senior dog. To get me the discount, my vet once pretended my 6-year-old was a senior. At my vet's, what they call the senior lab panel has always included a urinalysis, and my guys wind up getting it once a year for one reason or another (as a pre-surgical/-dental work-up or to check the output of The Peeing Wonder or to get baseline readings before someone starts new drugs).
