Hubcitypam
He has some big problems in his neck. The vet is hoping it is a sprain or something and he is on methocarbomal, pred and tramadol and will reassess in a few days unless he stays as uncomfortable as he is. I gave him some tramadol that I had here last night and it didn't seem to do much good. Maybe all three together will help. Ironic thing is that a couple of weeks ago I was about to take him into the speciality clinic for a neuro and ortho on his rear end but that got a bit better with treatment. Now he can't/won''t lift his neck any higher than his shoulders. When the vet opened up his file the unused referral to the specialists was on top. May still need it but hope not. This same thing happened with Rex - we could fix his back end to a degree but here was no fixing his neck. I am very afraid that I'm about to sit through a really bad movie again. Edited January 3, 2013 by Hubcitypam
Batmom
Don't give up too soon. IIRC it only took Joseph @ 3 days to quit squeaking each incident (twice) but it took Rocco the whippet several more, and he did recover well. Hugs and gentle scritchies. Hubcitypam
Thank you SO much Jey for calming me down and letting me know it might just be a sprain or something.

Hubcitypam
First let me give thanks that this is the second day of dropping to 20 mg of pred once a day instead of twice. Maybe the drink and pee fest will abate a bit. It was worth it though. He is sooo much better. Jey was exactly right - he started getting better by day 3...head up and taking treats. By day 4 he was waking me for cookies again. Now he's dancing and chattering. Vet said use tramadol as needed and he was fine without it yesterday. Now it's just the methocarbomal for a few more days and the decreasing pred. I had to put a "blank" ball of Velveeta in his bowl last night. He was getting three little balls (each med) and got very upset when there was just one. Don't know how I'm going to back out of this one.... Hubcitypam
I cannot tell you how bad things went south within an hour of my posting that wonderful update. He couldn't get up the steps, vomited twice and was in his bed shaking. We are back from the e-vet and it was not fun. He was panting so hard upon arrival that they wanted me to sign a paper that I was authorizing them to take any measures to save him (but perhaps that was a money making tactic). I said that he needed to be seen, but we weren't quite to any measures. He seems Ok now and I am going to try and get the tramadol down him. krissn333
I'd definitely keep giving the tramadol for at least another week. Until he can do a full shake comfortably, that's always been my rule of thumb here with my hooligans. Has he been to the Chiro or for acupuncture? Hubcitypam
I just had to pill him with the tramadol - he won't take anything you can put a pill in. What is really worrying me is that he is sort of "puffing" like inflating his lips when he breathes out. In my experience this isn't a good thing.... Batmom
Here we get puffing when dog feels a bit unsettled. Fingers crossed that is all it is with him. The tramadol is just a pain reliever -- won't do anything to help him heal, will just make him comfier. The prednisone (anti-inflammatory) is the one you don't want to stop too soon, if he can tolerate it. Did the vet say anything about adding Pepcid or similar to his regimen, to ease his tummy a little? Worth a try if you have some. Hugs and hopes he turns the right corner overnight and is back on the road to better tomorrow. Hubcitypam
She said to only give him 1/2 a pred later tonight instead of a whole one and add pepcid with that. I bought some on the way home, but she said wait 3-4 hours before trying to give him the pred and muscle relaxer...not quite there yet.
Batmom
Usually what I do is, 1. Give the Pepcid. 2. Wait 30-40 minutes. 3. Give meal or substantial snack. (This might not work for your boy tonight.) 4. Give other meds shortly after eating. You want to give the Pepcid a little time to work before you toss in the other meds. Hubcitypam
Jey - he is on his bed in the living room shaking like a leaf and puffing. I am hysterical. His eyes are all wrong.
