Back from Tech with no real news. 2 attempts for needle biopsy, not enough cells for diagnosis. The good news is no mets in the lungs! :yay Rourke is staying there tonight and they will do a traumatic catheterization under general anesthesia, and a cystoscope. If this is t-cell carcinoma he has a longer life expectancy and more treatment options than with prostate cancer. They do feel pretty certain of a cancer diagnosis. I will go back tomorrow and hopefully know more. The vets said he was the best dog, so sweet and gentle, and the head internal medicine vet will be doing the procedures tomorrow :thumbs-up

Update: we will be going to Va Tech on Wednesday for more tests and possile biopsy/culture on the mass. Please keep Rourke in your prayers

Kim

Rourke, has been having accidents in the house for several months. Took hm to the vet in November and had urinalysis, bloodwork and ultrasounds and found nothing except a small dark spot on his prostate. He was put on Bayytril for 4 weeks and repeat US didn't show the spot. However the accidents never stopped. About a month ago, he sprained his neck and was put on Rimadyl with tramadol, and the accidents stopped. When I stopped the NSAID the accidents started up. I have also had acupuncture and herbal remedies.Restarted Rimadyl and accidents were much less frequent. The past 3 days he had seemed very lethargic, so back to the vet. A rectal exam found a firm mass near the prostate. Doesn't show up on x-ray and appears dark on US. They think it is attached to prostate because they catheterized him and could see movement when they used US and moved catheter. We will be going to Va. Tech to have a needle biopsy done as soon as possible. Rourke was neutered after his racing career at 3 years 10 months, and was 7 in January. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? I have read that prostate cancer is pretty much a death sentence, but there are other possibilities. He has not lost any weight and still eats well, no discharge from his penis, has straining with urination and appears stiff in his back legs. Any information about this would be greatly appreciated. He is a very special boy.

I have a friend whose grey was found to have prostate cancer. She didn't find out until the very end :(. I haven't heard of anyone else having that diagnosis. I remember her dog too had been urinating frequently and all over the house. She spent months trying to find a cause. She used to be a member here but isn't any more. I'll see if I can get her to come on and give you some information. :grouphug

Not a greyhound, but about 9 years ago, my cattle dog had prostate cancer.

I went to a specialist, who told me we could do "hormone treatments". I didn't ask specifics, but went ahead with the treatments. I later learned that it was a type of chemo. (I have no idea what medication he was on)

Before going to the specialist, I thought that surgery would be an option; however, I learned that (at least then) prostate surgery was not possible on a dog.

Ezra lived a very good quality of life with absolutely no side effects from treatment for about 18 months. Then, the treatments just stopped working, and I lost him about 3 weeks later.

So, there is hope for some very good quality of life, and it is quite likely that there are newer, better treatments out there now.

I hope you and Rourke have a long, happy time together.

Rourke passed several bloody clots last night in his urine, but still acts like he feels ok. Even went on a walkie last night :inlove

Rourke is home, but they were not able to pass a scope past the os penis, and the traumatic catheterization did not produce enough cells to diagnose. There are atypical epithilial cells. My vet is contacting Ohio State tomorrow and we may try 2 rounds of chemo with piraxicam to see if it helps. Right now he is on my bed. Has a lot of bruising along the penile shaft. He is taking cephlexin, rimadyl andtramadol, and will start a smooth muscle relaxer on Monday to help with urethral spasms. Please keep praying for my sweet boy.

Oh gosh - poor Rourke sad.gif Why weren't they able to pass the scope - inflammation or the mass itself?

I hope the meds make him feel better very soon & that OSU can add some enlightenment. grouphug.gif
