Guest Roni
We recently adopted our first grey in a very long time. She's an absolute doll and every thing we were hoping for in a pet. But - oh my soul - the EYE BOOGERS! Great big gelatinous blobs are continually forming in the corners of her eyes. They don't seem to bother her, but they make me crazy. Does anyone else have this problem? She's been cleared by the vet, and she shows no sign of eye irritation - is there anything we can do to slow down the ceaseless trickle of goo? Guest DiforDan
We used to have eye boogers (or bogeys, we call them here in the UK) a lot with our Great Danes, but not much at all with our greyhounds. Perhaps a second opinion at vets would be a good idea?
OwnedBySummer
I've never had an excessive amount of eye boogers with either my non-greys or with Summer. Summer has the least amount of eye boogers that I've ever had in a dog. Hmmmm. Quote Lisa B. brandimom
Welcome aboard and glad you joined the GT family. No advice but just wanted to say welcome. Please post pictures when you have a chance. We always love to look at a new gh!
BauersMom
My Pepper produces eye boogies at an alarming rate. I've had two vets look at her and they found nothing of concern. We even tried some drops for a bit to see if that helps. Nope. So we just deal with the prolific boogie factory with much eye wiping! Guest dee
My greyhound has nothing ever coming from his eyes but our labradoodle is on special meds because the eye specialist said that she has dry eye ( same as humans) and her eyes become irritated .........and then yukky boogers. The meds have made a huge difference. Maybe that's the problem with your girl.
KF_in_Georgia
Pollen is very high in your area right now. Eye-booger production might slow some once the pollen eases up. Guest Roni
Thanks for the advice and the warm welcome. Eye boogers are clear/grey. Perhaps it's just allergies - I think I will take her to the vet for a second opinion. It's time for her to meet her new vet anyway. I don't have any good pics yet, but here she is with our Italian Greyhound. The two are getting along famously, which is wonderful because our IG is entirely neurotic. Guest Roadtripper
Welcome from a fellow newbie! Your pups are gorgeous--and your grey looks like what my little girl, Cairo, is quickly growing up to be like (I adopted a black grey puppy a month ago). The eye boogers could possibly be food or supplement related. My other dog, a greyhound/German shepherd mix, had really bad eye boogers a few months ago, which wasn't normal for him. They weren't yellow/green so I didn't think he had an infection. I had been giving him 2 fish oil capsules per day, and had also been getting a little carried away giving him treats & bites of human-food. I cut back on the treats & went down to 1 fish oil capsule per day, and his eyes cleared up within a week. I think his diet had been just a little too rich in fat & it drained out of his eyeballs. No proof, of course, but that's my hunch. Good luck, Amy, Boojum, & Cairo Edited April 12, 2012 by Roadtripper
GeorgeofNE
I have a cat with never ending eye goobers. We also had a dog (English Setter) with gross disgusting eye goo all the time. His eyes were "loose" and the goo was likely his body's way of keeping his eyes clean--so to speak. He had droopy eyes like a bloodhound--we did find that using regular eye drops helped somewhat. As to my cat, my vet thinks he may carry the herpes virus (cat version?) and that's why his eyes are always boogery. He was the only kitten in his litter who lived, so it is entirely possible that the other died from a virus. Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Guest BrianRke
Welcome! Daytona gets eye boogers daily. I am always picking them out. They seem to be worse now with the pollen.
IndyandHollyluv
"Gelatinous blobs" Your post is funny. But actually, I have noted the same as you described with two of my hounds - both black. This has not been an issue with any of my other hounds - just the black ones. I don't know what to attribute it to (smaller, deep-set eyes?) -- but it kills me not to be able to stick my finger in their eye and wipe out all the gunk! Congratulations and good luck with your new girl. Edited April 12, 2012 by IndyandHollyluv
Guest nnamdismom
I have a black boy who when we got him never had any and recently he has SO MUCH dandruff and eye boogies it drives me crazy. I think it's weird to wonder if it has something to do with the black dogs, but I can't help it from what I read here! I was thinking it was changing seasons. I would wait and see if it goes away because it could just be seasonal!
NeedlenoseJake
They make a cute pair! Jake had eye boogers pretty much every morning for the first year or so, but lately they have lessened. I'm not sure if I can attribute it to anything, but it's kind of nice to not have to dig in his eyes everyday! Edited to add- it could possibly be from switching to raw food, but I can't say for certain Edited March 15, 2016 by NeedlenoseJake Quote Photographer in Phoenix, AZ www.northmountainphoto.com
RaineysMom
YES!!! Our Larry has ridiculous boogies. In fact one of his nicknames is "Boogie Bear" He continually produces them and he either wipes them wherever he can, or I find them on the wall if he "flicks" (does that shake thing). They are grey when in his eyes, but turn hard and black once they leave and are really hard to get off the walls his eyes seem perfectly fine other than the boogies... XTRAWLD
Kasey had these every day. He graciously adorned my walls with them with every morning shake. I try to beat him to this and pick them out with a Q-tip. That dog would let you do anything to him I swear, knew I was coming to help when I got a cotton swab in my hand...... Ryder - he gets them extremely infrequently. I think some dogs are just built differently.
