Nesting

Hey everyone! Question about what to do with my greyhound, Ari. I would first off like to start with thanking everyone who encouraged me to stick with her. After having her for seven months, she is a completely different dog, and the whining and pacing that was driving me nuts in the beginning is pretty much gone :) Another positive outcome is that I have been bringing her to school with me a lot for meetings and such. Because of how sweet and friendly she is, we have convinced at least one of my classmates to adopt one of Ari's blood donor dog friends!

One problem has recently arisen: Ari has recently moved from sleeping on her dog bed on the floor to sleeping with me in my bed. She likes to "nest," where she paws at the blankets to make the bed more comfortable. Today I came home from school and found that she had ripped a rather large hole in my comforter. I love having her sleep with me and would hate to deny her human bed privileges, but I don't want to have to go out and buy a new comforter every week. She never does it when I'm around because I think she knows that it is a no-no, but I don't know how to discipline her for it when she does it when I'm gone. Any suggestions?

Can you close your bedroom door while you're gone? And leave her dog bed out so she can nest that instead?

Or take off your own comforter and replace it with one that she is allowed to nest... i.e. her own comforter. When my BF and I moved in together I saved my comforter for when we got a dog. It already had some holes in it so it became the dog blanket and he can nest it to his heart's content.

I'm counting. We have 4 fleece dog blankets, 2 QS doonas (comforters) and 2 double doonas that are for the dogs. They nest away to their hearts content. When we leave the house, our bed is made, then covered with two of their QS doonas and sometimes a blanket. We come home and out own doona and bed is intact even if they have nested in the others. It also reduces the amount of dog hair in our bed (but doesn't eliminate it entirely).

Close the bedroom door. That is what I do for the very same reason.

I read the ad for the Paws Off comforter. I am a little concerned that they would imply that this fleece bed cover would be enough to keep bacteria off the bed linens. At the last wound care inservice I attended, the wound care specialist informed us that bacteria can penetrate 64 layers of gauze! Sorry for the hijack, just had to get my two cents in!

I would just close the bedroom door. Have you considered a bean bag type bed? My grey would nest and nest and nest....until I was nearly driven mad with all the rustling. She trained me to fix her bed every night.

My dogs don't get on the bed--that's the cat's possession. However I have seen that Orvis makes a bedcover that protects against nesting, fur, and upset tummies. I haven't tried it and it is expensive, but based on their sofa covers and dog beds, it may be worth it.

I just took off the bed comfortor, and put on a very large quilt for her to lay on. On top of the quilt, I put a twin size blanket and a sheet that she likes to nestle into a long pillow that she can lay against to prop up her upper body.

She has three big orthopedic dog beds in the house all with blankets on top so she can nestle them into long pillows. That is Bella. She spends 80% on her queen size bed in the guest room looking out the window that is right next to "her" bed.

After my couch was ripped up....I have blankets every where, use to think I was the crazy dog lady, but it looks like I am the crazy blanket lady!! Now they nest in the blankets, and my torn up couch is safe, woohoo :)
