Guest gsanta
Our oldest, maggie, had to be put down yesterday. She lost her battle with cancer. My heart is broken. How long does it take before you start feeling better? This was my FIRST pet ever. Im 40 years old. I never knew what it was like to care for a pet until very late in life. Im a wreck. Can anyone offer any advice? I can't believe I feel this bad. Its hard to say this but i think this was the hardest death ive ever had to face, including humans. Please post your thoughts at my website. I really would appreciate them. Glenn http://www.thegreyhoundwalkingclub.com
beledi
Glenn, it is different with every person. I do not think the pain ever goes away. Our time is always way too short with them. So many of us have had to go on without our fur friends. Please know this Board has a lot of caring members and we are here for you. I also want you to know it is o.k. to cry. My husband. a big German guy cried like a baby when we had to euthanize our beloved Erda due to cancer. Remember, some people may say it is just a dog. Ignore them and grieve and honor your friend. Guest Gingergrey
This is a great place to look for support! Most of us here have been through what you are going through right now. I think I can safely say that it will take quite a while, but eventually you will be able to look at pictures of your sweet Maggie and smile. The void is unexplainable and very difficult to say the least. Maybe in time you will be able to honor Maggie by adopting another greyhound. The timeline is different for everyone. Sending hugs of friendship to you. Godspeed, runfree sweet Maggie

djsgreys
Glenn, I am so sorry for your loss. I know too well the pain you are feeling today. Allow yourself to grieve for as long as you need, even though others around you may not understand. Slowly, you will find the emptiness you are feeling replaced with all the good memories of the special times with Maggie, and tears are replaced with smiles. Guest MyCody
Iam so sorry for your loss and know just how you are feeling. Over the last fifteen years we have had six greys and have lost four at different times. We have experienced sudden losses and losses after illnesses and both are just as devastating. When you meake the decision to give them freedom from pain, it is with love, but I know it doesn't make it any easier. We had one little girl who was returned to the adoption agency at the age of seven because she "was sick all the time", well we took her and the poor little girl had lymphoma and we only got to show her true love for five months, but she had the best time and when it came time to let her go, we had to sit in the parking lot of the vet hospital for a half hour before we could drive. Eventually we made room in our hearts for another who as it turned out is related to that little girl so we know she sent her to us. You will never forget her, your heart will hurt a little always, but please, think of all the love you showed her and that she showed you, that always gives me a warm feeling. I still miss my first grey, Snowie, the little seven year old, Willa, Emmy Lou our nine year old brood mama that we lost after six months to cancer and of course our gentle giant, Cody our white sweetheart that we had to give the gift of freedom from pain a year ago at the age of thirteen. We now have Leah, age 9 and JJ age 3. You have a lot of love to give, take your time but don't let it go unshared. Terry

sweetdogs
I'm very sorry for your loss. Maggie was beautiful & obviously so well loved. It will take as much time as it takes. Every person is different & every relationship with every pet is different. When I lost my first pet, my kitty Mona, it was like I lost part of my identity. I didn't have a pet until I was 28 after wanting one my whole life. When I adopted her, my life changed. When she had to leave, it changed me again. I don't think I've really gotten over it (it's been 7 years). I've since lost 2 other pets but it hasn't been as brutal - very very hard, but not as bad. She will always be the most special & it's because of her that I will always live with animals. That's a very special gift she gave me. Godspeed Maggie! FiveRoooooers
I'm so sorry for your loss of your sweet Maggie. She is beautiful. I have enjoyed the company of pets all of my life, and when they have to leave it doesn't ever, ever, get any easier. They leave their footprints on our hearts. And at some point, you will welcome the remembering because that is what keeps them nearby, even when they are not. There is no timeframe and it's all normal, everything you are feeling. Just go with it, and you do not have to explain it, to anyone. Godspeed sweet Maggie Quote Old Dogs are the Best Dogs. Thank you, campers. Current enrollees: Punkin. Guest greymama002
Deepest sympathy on the loss of your precious girl. What has best helped me to overcome the intense loss is to let another hound into my heart; for me the sooner the better; but everyone is different. Wishing you peace. fsugrad
Glenn, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Maggie. She was beautiful. We understand how you are feeling. Give yourself time to grieve, and know that how you are feeling is completely normal. I don't mind admitting that I have shed many more tears over the loss of some of my beloved pets than I have over the loss of some human family members. Rest in peace, sweet Maggie. Guest Capslock
When my first grey left me, I was also about 40, it was my first dog, and I too couldn't believe how bad it felt. It was like a kick to the gut that never got any better. Greyhounds are special creatures, and it is to the credit of all of us who take them into our homes that they can blossom into the perfect creatures they are. Maggie's loss is so great because you did your job, Glenn. You gave her the best life possible, and it's worth it even though it hurts.
