  1. Sierra has two issues going on advanced CHF and kidney disease. My focus is keeping her eating. Each day its something different she may or may not want. I returned the K/D diet to the vet, she won't touch that stuff. She seems to like ProPlan canned Beef and Peas selection. I have also gotten her eat hamburger patties fried up and rice with a bit of Fresh Pet hidden in it. So as most people have replied its about what she will eat and how much I can get her to eat each day. She pounced in the snow today and looked at me and wagged her tail! Those are the things that make me smile.
  2. Yes, today has been "what ever I can get her to eat". She sees her specialist the week after next. I am going to see what he can give her to stimulate appetite. Tonight it hamburger and rice. I have to watch her for diarrhea.
  3. She has serious heart issues, which have gotten worse. She has several leaking values. This week at the vet she was in a serious situation. We got her on meds to maintain. I am aware as the vet has told me that the meds are going to make her kidney disease progress. I have been following the diet for kidney dogs I found on dogaware.com. She has been eating well until we started the heart meds this week. I am going to feed her what she will eat and try to keep the phosphoreus levels low.
  4. Hello Everyone, I have a 13.5 year old grey, Sierra who is suffering from heart issues which we have on medications for and she has moderate stage kidney disease. She is under her vet and a specialist for her care. We have tried feeding canned K/D diet from the vet but Sierra won't eat this. I have been home cooking according to a list I found online for kidney dogs. She was started in meds for her heart last week and now her appetite has really become surpressed. I have been adding nutritional flakes to her food so that it will stimulate appetite. I don't want to add to many things to her diet since this could cause diarrhea. I feed her throughout the day as she will tolerate. I am concerned the heart meds are going to make it difficult to keep her interested in her food but we have to have her on them. Any suggestions on feeding would be appreciated.
  5. Vet visit confirmed an infection. Also just for additional information did a kidney panel. Levels seem to be okay. Going to monitor that over next few weeks. She got some Cipro for two weeks. Glad it was something a prescription can make better. Her bed is all clean ready for a good night's sleep.
  6. Sierra is 12 now. Last night she must have peed while sleeping because her bed was soaked. I think this also happened yesterday during the day. I'm sure its incontinence. She would never pee in the house unless she was ill. The pee smells foul (not that I like regular pee smell either). She seems like she doesn't feel good either. I have an appointment for after work to get her in at her vet. I hope its just a UTI.
  7. We saw the vet and she is treating the tooth with antibiotics. She didn't suggest an extraction which I am glad to hear.
  8. I hope she doesn't have to have it extracted. She has been through a lot.
  9. She has an appointment on Monday. She is seeing the dental vet.
  10. Sierra had a major dental done 2 months ago. She is a senior 12 years old now. The dental went well considering her age and losing 8 teeth. Her upper right canine I noticed is pink and her gum is swollen over the tooth. Will the vet consider extracting this tooth?
  11. Sierra is 12 and she is a very picky eater. She won't eat after a bad thunderstorm or if the other dogs huddle around her while she eats. I hold her dish while she eats to keep the other dogs from eating her meals. She eats very slow. I have just learned to be patient with her and we take about six times of sitting down holding her dish throughout the day so she gets her meals. I also llimit any table scraps as this does make my dogs want what your eating instead of their food.
  12. Sierra is a white grey with a thick coat. She has been shedding like a long haired cat for the past two months. Anyone else having hair mountains falling off their greys this summer?
  13. I have just noticed that my older grey of 11, Sierra has been having bleeding gums. These are some great tips. I ordered Biotene antiseptic gel to try first. I also applied some perioxide solution to her gums today. I also use Petzlife gel. I tired the Nutrivet dental rinse and give this a thumbs down (it never did anything).
  14. I saw this on the news yesterday. I feed Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice. I dumped the rest of the supply and headed out and purchased a bag of Pro Plan Salmon for my girls.
  15. Kelly and Kevin Rocky was a great boy. I will miss him so much.
  16. I use both. I purchase them off of Amazaon in a set which I found the cheapest priced. Seems to work well.
  17. Kim - I am so sorry for your loss of Callie. I still remember meeting you and Callie at a meet and greet and you told me that you orginally planned to look at (Trish) Ali first and it ended up that you adopted Callie and I adopted Ali. We can both know that we gave both our lovely girls great loving lives and wonderful homes. I know how hard it is to lose your beloved girl, Ali passed in 5/2010 and its been a lonely world without her. You will have wonderful memories that Callie gave you and Herman over the years to cherish. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. Kerry (Ali-at the bridge, Sierra, Chase and Macy)
  18. I have seen hair growth with my two greyhounds who had balding rear quarters with feeding them a good quality food. Ali and Macy have growth thicker coats even got hair on their bellies.
  19. I just ordered one for Sierra, my 10 almost 11 year old grey girl. She is terrified of thunder and rain storms. I felt it was worth the try at least since it has a money back return policy. I can't wait to get it to try it out and see if she gets some relief.
  20. I was in Walmart in St Louis this weekend and notice a sales person doing a demo on PetArmor. I looked it up online and its the generic of Frontline. Any one else see this product. Anyone tried for their grey?
  21. It will be one year tomorrmow on May 5th, 2010 I had to let Ali go to the bridge. Its been the hardest year ever for me. Losing her, my step-father and my job. Ali was a kind spirit with a gentle soul. Amazing how they can touch your life and make it ever lasting. She would have been 12 on 5/6/2011. You are missed every single day.
  22. I think she had an allergic reaction to something. I gave her some benedryl yesterday and she seems to be fine. My vet said to watch her over the next few days to see if it happens again.
  23. The last time I seen a "waddle" under Sierra's chin was when she was diagnosed with Histo. Apparently her lymph nodes were clogged up and it caused fluid retention on her chin. Yesterday, I noticed underneath her chin she had very loose skin and her neck was feeling sort of puffy. I read that histo doesn't come back, so not sure what this is. We are going to see the vet tomorrow for a diagnosis. Pretty sure since her history involved histo, they will do a needle biopsy to see what is going on. Keeping good thoughts coming.
  24. I took Sierra over to the vet on Friday evening after work. Her vet re-examined the foot and they did some xrays to be sure she didn't have a broken toe or something to be of concern. Nothing on the xrays to see. My vet did another microscope exam of the crust on the toe, and nothing. We are continuing the medication and add foot soaks twice a day.
  25. I posted an early topic this week on Sierra's toenail. She went to the vet and she has to do foot soaks twice a day as well. We did one yesterday, and she lasted 2 minutes.
