Introducing Ali

Hi Everyone

You may recall we lost our gorgeous girl Sarah last month to a tumour near her heart (she was 10 years and 5 months). Our house has been so empty and quiet without her (even with 3 teenage boys) that we had to fill the loneliness with another Grey. We joined Grey Talk 4 1/2 years ago under the name AndyUK (perhaps 1 or 2 may remember me) but was unable to log in recently and had to change my title to Ref.

The new addition to our family is Ali (Blue Alias - 145 races too many). We felt really guilty at first (and still do if we're really honest) about adopting another Grey so soon after Sarah's death, but we have tried to rationalise this by saying it is a tribute to how much we loved Sarah that we needed another girl to fill the hole she has left in our lives.

Ali is so different to Sarah. Ali craves attention and love and is so eager to please (Sarah made us earn her love and affection and boy did we give it). Ali is so easy going and gentle, Sarah was a handful in every sense of the word. Sarah was dark brindle and Ali is a beautiful Blue girl.

She's 5 years old, is very very nosy, loves a cuddle and grumbles when she is waiting to go out for a walk. Her teeth, gums and breath are awful so we are having to give her soft food for now - a Bonio (a hard dog biscuit) takes about an hour to eat - but we'll soon get that sorted. We think she has a problem with her hips as she can't jump on the bed and walks upstairs like an old lady.

All in all, she's settled in so well we can't believe she's never been in a house before and has been here such a short time.

No doubt we'll be asking for advice every now and again as we get to know her better but for now here are a couple of photos of our new girl.

I am so sorry for your loss of Sarah, but I agree the best tribute we can give to our beloved angels is to offer a spot on the couch to another one looking for a home.

Ali is beautiful, and sounds like she needs your love and care.

Welcome back to GT. :)

We lost Bailey to cancer less than 2 months ago but DH and I always said we'd adopt another as a way to cherish Bailey's memory because she opened us up to this wonderful world of greyhounds, plus so many need homes. We adopted Brooke 10 days later. Our hearts were broken and empty and then Brooke came into our lives. She has been an incredible grief counsellor and we have never regretted it. Our hearts a big and we expect to love many more as time goes on. Plus we never looked at Brooke as a replacement, rather she was an addition to our family. I grieved and loved again at the same time.

Congratulations...I hope she helps ease your pain.

Congrats! She is very pretty. And, don't feel guilty- it IS a tribute to how much you loved Sarah. You did not keep the love you had for Sarah in limbo- you shared it with another deserving (and she really does sound deserving!!!) hound.

I think it's wonderful! Enjoy her.

ETA- and I DO remember you!

As usual, I'm a few days late on this... but welcome back.

I too am sorry for your loss; but I've Always felt that adopting another greyhound was the very best tribute I could offer to the one who had to journey on ahead. The beautiful boy who is my avatar picture (Shiloh, photo by Praveen Mutalik)... was adopted as a tribute to my soul-hound, Harley Stardancer (and yes, he now occupies his own special place in my heart.) And so the Circle goes on.

Your new girl is very beautiful.. I'm sure you'll be bringing lots of healing to each other.
